Yeah, "Jalovc" is "Jalovc", some guy once told me when I asked why he goes up every year. The path really isn't to be taken lightly. I've personally always gone from Tamar (summer over Kotovo sedlo, winter over Ozebnik). For Jalovec it's characteristic that it's extremely crumbly and protections are worn out. Somewhere you need to grab the rock too... , otherwise Jalovec has a special place in my heart. Lpp

Jalovec is a mountain for the soul. I've been up there around 70 times from all directions, all seasons. Easiest of course from Zapodna to Špiček and summit. My favorite is from Zapodna past hunters' hut to Mali kot and over Goličica to Jezerca and summit (there around 2.0 - 2.45 hours), descent over Veliki Ozebnik to Špička and back down to Zapodna. For those wanting solitary ascent nicest from Loška Koritnica to sedlo Brežice and over Škrbina behind Grad to Špička, then up to summit and descent over Kotovo sedlo back to Loška Koritnica. Twice I did variant past Loški žleb over "big screes" on west side and joined secured path from Kotovo sedlo to summit via some gully. Also went from Bavšica through Bale valley to Škrbina behind Grad, the one from Vršič dragged most. Of course winter always from Tamar through Ozebnik, once tried through Loški žleb but turned due bad snow conditions. But whoever expects paths on Jalovec secured like say on Triglav will be very disappointed. Jalovec isn't for anyone, that's why visits much less than other mountains and maybe it's right. Don't agree at all that protections worn out, simply not, nor so crumbly as geolog79 claims. Maybe hasn't seen real crumbly mountains yet. And one wonderful feature Jalovec has, namely at Špička always friendly keepers from Franceljna, Pavleta and now Nade and Marička. Nice to chat with such people.

When you mention crumbliness. Interested how crumbly is Jalovec compared to Mrzla gora? Thanks! Regards

Generally I think the Kamnik-Savinja Alps are much more crumbly than the Julian ones. It's true the path to Mrzla Gora is one of the most crumbly paths in the Kamnik Alps. Be careful of course also on Jalovec, just last year when with my friend we were returning to Kotovo Sedlo a big rock flew over the cliff.

Jalovec can't compare to Mrzla Gora neither regarding crumbliness nor regarding lacking protections. Mrzla Gora is in a league of its own.... No wonder Mašer and T. Mihelič named it the hardest accessible 2000er in KSA. LP

Where do we sleep so they don't steal from us?

Years ago, when there was no abundance, we mountaineers slept around the hut under some boulder or recess. Thieves had nothing to seek there. I also remember a conversation when some Czech loaded a log that was the property of the Trieste Hut at Dolič and wanted to carry it to the valley. After a few dozen meters from the hut, he put it down because it was too heavy. Well, I go today also for it to heat the house at 13°C in August!

Hi! I'm interested in the conditions on the path from Zapodna. We are planning to go up over the weekend if the weather is nice. Is safety gear needed, ice axe, crampons...? + Maybe some advice besides caution, of course?

For the ascent, a helmet is essential. Never without it!!! A via ferrata set is recommended but there are not many cables. Considerable caution is needed due to scree. Best regards and successful ascent.

Jalovec from Tamar. Up via Kotovo sedlo and back over Jalovška škrbina or better reverse? Lp

In my opinion, better the other way around.

Just to add that yesterday on Jalovec I didn't meet poorly equipped hikers like some time ago on Triglav, that says something about the mountain itself.
