You can drive to Kovinarska koča, if you're a bit more persistent and the car has higher clearance, to the parking at the trough about a km before Lesa. If really persistent, along wide deep tire tracks to Lesa too. Until Friday still warm, snow melting, maybe easier. Skin track made, to Velega polje shared by hikers and ski tourers, then splits occasionally. Snow wet, unprocessed, most annoying for walking with skis between Prgarca and Ulici. Higher less sinking. At Kredarica calm, some time only arrival. Two groups to Triglav, two more after me, met one on descent. Sunny, good visibility, north winds. Tea at Kredarica divine, had two. Ski back to edge of Ulici on south unprocessed snow ok, to Prgarca harder, lower despite recent rain snow not covered all branches and scrub, shorter turns, sometimes path, bush to bush. Two after me said right of Velega polje on gully good. Possible to car of course, end March not guaranteed. One track apparently via Apnenica to Staničev dom then Kredarica. Those spots dear to heart, if noticed track probably taken it. Pity, next time! ]]>

So yesterday - third time this year - I ended up at Kredarica. I'm aware that in these tough times when rescuers and doctors in the valley have plenty of work, I mustn't burden them even accidentally and venture into anything more demanding. Kredarica is thus truly the right destination - nothing can happen to you here. The greatest risk of injury would be burns from hot tea from the thermos, a chunk of ice sliding onto your head from the roof of the hut at Kredarica, or a bear attack, which apparently is roaming around there again... From Krma I started at least an hour later than a few days ago to Rjavina. I hoped that the road conditions would improve enough in that time to reach the trough, but they didn't, so I left the car again in front of Kovinarska koča. Right at the start I overtook two young women on skis who had set off in the same direction, then there was nobody. The walk was great, morning temperature tolerable too, path well-trodden, no wind. What more could you want? Yes, young legs. Four years ago I covered this distance an hour faster Hut doors closed, no poster saying why, I was informed about that beforehand anyway. I changed and snacked on the bench outside basking in the sun. I enjoyed it up there for quite a while, protected by goggles and creams for face and lips. While looking at the hut photos, I noticed that the roof of Staničev dom was partly exposed. I had that feeling already on Wednesday from the Rjavina visit, but the photo was less clear. If anyone has contact with the hut manager, please pass on the info so no further damage is done. The fear that something would collapse on the return was unfounded and I was back in the valley in the blink of an eye. They forecast another nice day for Thursday...]]>

Ah, where are those free times when one didn't even think that someone would rescue them.

Thanks, Majda. April rains can cause a lot of damage, a renewed strong wind can easily rip the whole roof like a tin can now that it's damaged. Timely forwarding saved the Kočna bivouac from doom years ago, I hope the same here.

Regarding GRS, it would be fairest if rescues were paid via PZS or other alpine organizations like ÖAV, pay 65€ and everything is covered. Austrian rescuers are paid for rescue and assistance and probably don't think why they have to expose themselves when doing their job. That would be best here too, as soon as possible. Everyone happy and no more blame. Safe steps to all.

Voluntary contributions to societies are not forbidden either... Everyone could be grateful at least to the best of their abilities. That would be a nice habit, or even an unwritten rule.

In exchange for a modest contribution of 6 EUR (of course you can contribute more) you get a car sticker from GRS. They send it to your home too. But I think I don't see many of them on parked cars under tour starting points. Too bad, as the sticker, besides expressing solidarity aid, also encourages awareness that rescue is not just taken for granted.

Oh come on no.They don't just rescue in mountains, they help in natural disasters, and many other places. If you knew and respected their work you'd buy the GRS sticker like I do every year. Because sometimes they rescue even the best, the fastest, and all they get is thanks.

Primoz, have you thought about markacists going to paint rocks in the middle of the night, on call, without anyone notifying them before. They simply come for them, regardless of weather, possible snow conditions, take them to mark paths, even if they are at their kids' or wife's birthday. Of course markacists risk their lives while marking paths, and sacrifice hundreds of hours of free time for trainings and exercises. Completely incomparable to mountain rescuers, really.

Yesterday (Saturday, May 9) over Kot to the top of Kredarica and back - without skis. First snow starts at Studenec, downhill you can ski down to there on the snowfield right below Luknja peč. Footpath is still snow-free for a while, consolidated snow starts about 15 min walk higher. Due to relative thaw we made a track closer to the wall of Rjavina, it was pleasantly shady, nothing was flying over the wall. Up to Staničeva koča it didn't sink much uphill, here and there slipped on hard base under thawed snow. So we put on crampons before the annoying traverse above Peklo, walking was much more comfortable with them. From Staničeva koča we continued on the most logical path to the top of Kredarica - the right of two gullies leading to the ridge between Rž and Kredarica. On the small ridge by the gully visible broken wires of the old path. Locally sank to knees or more. From the top of course nice views all around, also to the hut with some visitors, above it we heard drone buzzing . Descended the same way, no issues, just snow unpredictably collapsed in places, even to waist, with all annoying and in steeper terrain (despite thaw) also potentially dangerous consequences. Weather nice, occasionally a cloud came by. Over Kot at least 15 ski tourers came, quite a few also Za Cmirom. Besides ice axe and crampons more for safety, waterproof boots and gaiters are essential.

Does anyone have fresher info on the path conditions from Krma to Kredarica? Still icy anywhere? Thanks.

Conditions yesterday, snow only last 500 vm, it was soft and sinking, but not excessively. If you're really early up there and if clear night, it could be hard too...
