Kurja vas - Kredarica

After a long time I'm writing so this nice section won't be deserted wink

Park in Kurja vas, snow starts about 40m from parking and so I set off on skis. In morning hours nicely frozen, during the day thaw below cca. 2200m. Avalanches slid quite a bit in previous days, today no new avalanches.
Spring ski touring season has already started cool first hikers have arrived too (without snowshoes). Wide terrace in front of the hut ready for chilling with cold beer in hand....it's quite hard to head down to the valley biggrin
Recommended, today was top-notch and very few visitors.

6.4.2018, Karničar said yesterday at Pgarc that he skied with these from Annapurna in 1995, but the bindings are a bit older wink Long from Kurja vas and heavy with spare gear... But always worth it biggrin Don't drive beyond Kurja because 100m further they were digging them out of snow (Austrians...), then more and more snow, at Kovinarska sinkholes even over the knee. Avalanche fields left and right full and not all sprinkled with fresh. Above the scree to Vrtača also icy, further on mostly soft (and heavy). Quite a few went to the top too.

Today it was a real pleasure to run to Kredarica. Conditions in the morning good, because no sinking. Later warmly recommend snowshoes:

Actually I planned via Bohinjska vratca to Velska dolina and further towards Hribarice, but the slope below Vratca seemed a bit too avalanched and I decided for Kredarica.

Car (has slightly higher ground clearance) I left less than a kilometer before Kovinarska koča, where there's space for two, maybe three cars, road to there icy and with quite a few tire tracks. Other cars parked a kilometer or two earlier. Road to Kovinarska koča currently impassable, at Pri lesi there's about half a meter of packed snow on it, so it will take at least three or four weeks to melt at least partially.

With skis it went very well, snow up to Prgarca already quite reworked and a bit thawing. Above 1700 sun-exposed slopes where no problems with skis, somewhat more sinking for pedestrians, but not too bad. Track and (kindly next to it) trail led right of Vrh Snežne konte, no problems, just somehow my breath was weird, so this was by far my slowest ascent to Kredarica. Next time better...

Skiing back down was pure joy, despite the wet, fresh and thus poorly reworked snow sinking quite a bit. On the large area below Kredarica there were barely 15 ski tracks drawn in the snow, so plenty of space for heavenly zigzagging, which is rare. More trouble for hikers who sank here and there up to their belly on descent already on Ulica and later above Prgarca. Lower down snow much more reworked and less sinking, could ski all the way at the valley bottom, scree fully covered with snow. Tiring traverses below Draški vrhovi not needed.

At Kredarica that day about 20 or 25 visitors, mostly skiers. Friendliness of "emergency caretakers" such as only meteorologists can do. Barley stew that matched the excellent cooking of my long-deceased grandmother and a huge mug of fragrant Turkish coffee, both kindly brought right to the sunny bench in front of the hut, can only happen at Kredarica in winter. Thank you!

And this too: during chat on the bench in front of Kredarica I learned that the road into Vrata valley is drivable at least to the start of the Za Cmirom trail (Turkov rovt), so about a kilometer away from the parking at Aljažev dom.
The parking lot at Pri lesi stands empty.1
Sunny Prgarca firmly under snow.2
Just a few more meters.. one of the most coveted views from the end of Kalvarija.3
There was no one on Triglav.4
You'll have to wait a little for the next mass.5
As much space for zigzagging as you want.6
Towards Kurica untouched.7
The Bohinjska vratca are quite wind-smoothed. Touring skiers who came via the Triglavska magistrala went over Konjsko sedlo.8
Skiing is comfortable along the valley bottom, crossings under the Draški vrhovi are not necessary. The scree is fully covered with snow.9

Yesterday, with skis through the Za Cmirom valley. Snow starts at the end of the forest, about 200 elevation meters above parking in Turkov rovt. Scree almost fully covered with heavily reworked avalanche debris, which is frozen under the walls of Mlinarice and Vrbanove špice, under Cmir fully thawed in the sun heat. To the flattening at the start of Za Cmirom valley I kept more to the right, then with skins crossed the shaded and hard left slopes. Jump under Begunjski vrh fully snowed, so I could climb directly up over it and join the Staničev dom - Cmir path south of Begunjski vrh. Thus completely avoided the traverses under Begunjski vrh.

From Staničev dom I also kept to shaded slopes of Rž and Kredarica summit, no skins needed here.

Back I skied the same way. Mostly thawed snow, but could choose: under shady walls less soft, on sun-exposed slopes under Cmir barely rideable. Got right to the forest, last few hundred meters on avalanche debris single stones visible. Seems Bistrica rose a bit during the day, despite care I got water in ski boot when crossing. No big deal.

At Kredarica as it is and should be. Friendly! Some hikers apparently tried Triglav, but turned back due to late hour and consequent heavy thaw in second traverse. Interesting that in Krma much more snow than in Vrata. At Lesi at over 900m still around 40 cm, while in Vrata serious snow starts only at under 1200m above sea.
Ascent on reworked avalanche terrain.1
Last slope right before the leveling - transition to the Za Cmirom valley. 2
Za Cmirom: went left of the large rock to a smaller shoulder and then zigzagged straight up.3
View of Triglav from in front of Staničev dom.4
Play of sunlight and avalanches.5
Decorations from numerous avalanches and avalanche debris.6
Coffee on the bench in front of Kredarica.7
Škrlatica from below Begunjski vrh.8
Cmir, partially avalanched southern slope.9
On the return I skied under the walls of Vrbanove špice. Snow as much as you want.10
Signature among the boulders.11
About 1500 m ski descent from Kredarica.12
In the last 200 or 300 meters rocks are visible here and there.13
To the last patch of snow and a little further.14
In ski boots across the water hop-hop from stone to stone, once also a little splash. But who would get worked up about that.15

#devill, #lencka: Today around 6am we parked at the end of Zasipska planina, about 300m before the spring, but had slightly higher car. Others stopped a km or more before Kovinarska koča.

We went with skis, saw tracks of someone with crampons who didn't sink at least to Malo polje, where we turned over Apnenica, so higher I don't know how it is.

At least one was on Triglav, but in my opinion the thawed second traverse is critically bad.

Over Apnenica we were the only ones. At Kredarica mostly skiers. No skins needed anywhere. Not even at the traverse under Rž and Kredarica, where we took 10-20m lower (and more thawed) variant than others.
Vernar and Bohinjska vratca.1
The shepherd's hut in Zgornja Krma is already badly damaged.2
Rž.3
Across Apnenica towards Dovška vratca. As much snow as you like.4
Staničev dom. Begunjski vrh was entirely ski-tracked.5
View across the glacier towards Triglav. 6
Just below Kredarica.7
Skiing from Kredarica in corn snow.8
Old touring ski markers are holding on tenaciously. In the back Veliki Draški vrh and Tosc.9
In Kurja vas you have to cross the swollen Krmarica by car.10

Has anyone gone up from Krma these days? What are the conditions in the valley (how far by car) and what are the conditions on the path?
Thanks!

Hi. Conditions are currently quite pleasant even for hikers - of course assuming early start.

With personal car easy to reach (almost) the last parking at Lesa (cca 150m short due to big hole in road).

Good luck!

Hello!
Has anyone been to Kredarica from Krma in the last few days? What are the conditions for hikers? Required gear? What dangers? How far by car? Best; P.

Krma - Kredarica

Road drivable from Radovna via right fork (left past Psnak road washed away), via Bled currently preventively officially closed. To Krma few fallen trees, suitably cleared for normal drive.
Before parking in Lesa flooded, lake, need to park lower by road, cca. 5min walk to trailhead. On path water made mess, destroyed trail, spreads on all sides, passable by finding suitable crossings, but really no guarantee for dry shoes, bypass on right.
Conditions higher up will change today, but wintery, recommend proper gear. Track along winter Calvary.
Opening winter season and beautiful day in mountain paradise where time always flies too fast cool

Today was a great day for visiting Kredarica. Starting point Krma. The path to Prgarca is heavily damaged in many places from the last storm. Further to Kredarica there is some snow, which does not pose an obstacle on the path. Further to Triglav there are winter conditions (winter gear). At the top of Kredarica there are beautiful views, very few mountaineers. Nice mountaineering greetings.

The road past the museum at Pocarja is drivable. There is still some water but no problems crossing anymore.
The turnoff past Psnak inn won't be drivable for some time.nasmeh
