You're thinking wrong, crampons go OBLIGATORILY together with ice axe!

that's obvious, I'm just curious how or if you can get up there, yesterday some had ice axe even to the hut at Kamniško sedlo, and I know it's not needed, so I'm asking how it is on this path, and not comparing them at all, because Krn is something else, asking just informatively, nothing more mežikanje

Macesen, sorry, but I disagree with you the most..

Yep, you can get up without ice axe yeah.. I had it with me, but it stayed on the backpack, same as with the vast majority of other visitors.
But you gotta be smart enough to take care of your safety and judge how and what.

Read everything!
"Crampons are more than recommended", from that it follows, as I wrote, one without the other doesn't go!

I agree Marky, definitely everyone knows themselves, and better more caution than too little.. anyway if I go, ice axe goes with me, even if it stays on backpack right nasmeh

How many people have I seen this winter with only crampons on and using poles instead of ice axe, everyone must know for themselves what they need in given conditions, because on path to Krn at least last Saturday you "don't know" where to direct (except right under hut) upon a fall, since I barely slid down the biggest slope backwards (when I went back once more 2x same day then in that biggest slope I absolutely needed crampons and ice axe, conditions worsened towards evening, it was smoother), I got to the top without crampons (first time) with help of ice axe and poles, definitely proper use is crampons, ice axe and helmet.

Marky makes nice pictures, because he has very good and expensive camera too.

It was supernasmeh

Now "lg" won't write for a while, as he's taking his keyboard in for service. Looks like his dot key (.) isn't working.
But meanwhile he'll probably do some nice hikes.velik nasmeh

On Saturday, February 25, 2012, we headed to Krn from Planina Kuhinja. The road to the hut is dry and therefore well drivable.

Weather was great, warm and no wind, so it was really nice to enjoy the summit.

There's some snow left only towards the top, about a meter. But we had quite some trouble, as the snow was wet and we sank in often, even up to our waists at times. So this hike took quite a bit of energy and strength, but all the effort was rewarded at the top with a beautiful view smile

You can see pictures from the hike on the website of Planinsko društvo Matica Murska Sobota: http://www.mojalbum.com/pdmaticams/20120225-krn-pl-kuhinja/pogled-proti-vrhu-krna/19466859

Hi,

I'm thinking about going to Krn tomorrow, but wondering if there's avalanche danger, slab slides etc. due to high temperatures. We don't have much experience with this.

Please give opinion and advice.

thanks and best.

better wait a bit until the snow melts, then go up, for such an undertaking you need full gear and experience, fitness and perseverance.

To: MarkoXS

I was on Krn on Sunday (you can see pictures above).

No avalanche danger at all, because there's not that much snow. The biggest problem is actually that the snow is wetter and you sink into it up to your knees (sometimes up to your butt) - which takes a lot of strength and energy, as you have to keep pulling yourself out of the holes. So if you're fit enough, no problem smile

p.s.: don't forget proper winter gear (crampons, ice axe) - just in case wink

On Saturday I was on Krn. Conditions excellent, even a bit too warm. Summit visited by about 15 hikers. Snow almost none except under the summit, crampons and ice axe not needed. Where you had to step on snow, you could sink up to your butt.
If it cools down and freezes, better have crampons and ice axe with you.

Katja87:
Thanks for info. hike excellent and not too demanding because almost no snow left.

Yesterday Krn was a real "Pihavec", as the whole way there was that real, bone-chilling, unrelenting sharp wind that even moved me at times. Only on the descent far below did it ease up. I agree with the above reports that there's little snow and the path isn't difficult (of course, in lower temperatures winter gear would be useful, if not earlier, then at least from the hut to the top). wink

P.S.: Starting point pl. Kuhinja
