Krn

My wife and I also made the ascent from pl. Kuhinja to the top of Krn yesterday. A NE wind was blowing, strong especially down low; at Gomišček shelter it was calm when we arrived, the same for most of the way to the top, where it later blew lightly (around 13:30) but not like for those ahead of us a few hours earlier. There is really not much snow, but on the mulatiera it starts from the sign «S. Korena route very demanding». Due to the cooler night and day, the snow didn't sink and nicely bore my weight. Up and down without extra winter gear, but if conditions change, it will be useful already below the hut (ca. 500 m length and of course to the top). The north side of Krn toward Krn Lake and toward Batognica has way more snow and a real snowy idyll. Krn Lake is still under ice. Views toward Triglav, Mangart, Kanin range and Rodica wonderful, toward S and SW worse. At the top and shelter we lingered, basking in the sun's rays, for 1.5 hours. The descent flew by.

Is the hut at pl. Kuhinja open on weekends?

AS, I'm wondering how long you take from Kuhinja to the shelter. Since I have an equally perfectly sculpted body as you (no mustache though), how long to the top. Age probably similar.

@Alpski Slovenc: We met (shaggy with dog). Nice that you enjoyed the calm, not me... early hour not always golden zavijanje z očmi

@rs56: No mustache either and needed just under 2.5 hrs.

I figured it was you, Azael, when we talked about how it was at the top. We really had luck with the wind up there. rs56 up took us 3 hours 40 min, without straining, meanwhile also taking photos around. In my opinion, the hut is not open, at least not on weekdays, maybe on weekends but I doubt it, because no smoke from the chimney.

Today there were ideal conditions on Krn, not much wind either, and Planina Kuhinja is already real spring.

On Saturday I was on Krn too. Around 12 o'clock three hikers (more precisely: one female hiker and two male hikers smile) with winter gear (crampons and ice axe) left Krn via Batognica and made a circular descent (exactly where, I don't know). We met again at Planina Kašina. They said no problems and it would be doable without gear because the snow became crusty during the day.
Good luck! smile

"They said there were no problems and it was doable without gear because the snow crusted during the day".
Probably true, no issues, but many have no such luck, so no gear, Batognica is very slippery and dangerous, several fatalities already.

Especially war-related because huge number fallen both sides, dangerous mountain so gear and brains on trail, nasmeh

Fanta, I completely agree! I only wrote what they told me - and also that they were completely properly equipped! Question - what would it be if they weren't. It's easier to foresee than to experience.

Yesterday on Krn. In these conditions Krn is a summer tour, from planina Kuhinja it's real spring, otherwise Krnsko jezero is still icy. Otherwise wonderful day. Hut on planina Kuhinja open, friendly hutkeeper served me nicely on return.nasmehvelik nasmeh

I'm wondering, what's the path to Krn from planina Kuhinja like? Where does snow start and is winter gear needed? Majda.

Hello!
Some are interested in what the path to Krn is like. Of course it's still winter and the path is too (winter conditions). If anyone is interested, there is an organized ascent to Krn on Tuesday, May 1st. Traditionally by PD Kobarid.
LP and safe in the mountains!
