In the future, I plan to go to Krn from Lepena. At the lake, I would turn left towards Komna and go to Prehodci, then behind Šmohorji to Peske and on to Prag. Over Batognica, I would then climb up to Krn. I wonder how much longer such a path would be than the usual one (lake - planina Polje - notch - Krn summit)?

Janez, I'm not quite sure which path you mean. There are already two marked options to Prehodci: Za Lepočami (where you can see the remains of Italian barracks from the times of the Rapallo Border) or the path that branches right before Doliči (Krn-Over Peske). It is shorter and joins before Prehodci. The sign says 3h to Krn. From Krn Lake to Lepoč maybe 1h, to Prehodci another 0.5h. Shorter path about 1h to junction below Prehodci. Don't know the unmarked path under Mali Šmohor. But if heading under Šmohorji, no need for Prehodci. From the lake over Krnska Škrbina to Krn summit 2.5h. I did this path in summer and returned via Prehodci. Path impressions on the link: http://www.hribi.net/trenutnerazmere.asp?slo=1&gorovjeid=1&id=1031

Suzana M! Thanks for delving into it. I plan to go from Krn Lake in the direction of Komna and, as you mentioned, turn towards Krn before Doliči (over Peske). I had no intention of going under Šmohorji, I just meant left of Šmohorji (on the map left is Malen, right Šmohorji) - all on marked paths. Based on my knowledge of the area and the map, Primož's estimate of the extra time seems realistic.

Hello! Nice weather forecast for the weekend, so my friend and I decided to head to Krn. Has anyone been up there in the last week? Or at least nearby. The slope from Kuhinja to the summit is probably quite windblown and consequently little snow. Lp

Today was near Krasji vrh, I think conditions are the same. South side no snow at all, more was 14 days ago, you can go without worry, it will be a proper summer hike (no crampons and ice axe), north side is a different story

I haven't been up there, but I saw friend's pics on FB by chance. No solid blanket, snow in patches. Some of it on the top anyway

On Friday evening Primorsko was fogged up too, and with the forecast for Saturday it would really be a shame to stay home. I set off from pl. Kuhinja to Krn. Weather gorgeous, spring-like warm. Views superb, only in the south the deep blue was veiled by "white cream". Path unremarkable, grasses dry, snow on the path starts above 1800m asl but caused no trouble and winter gear was not needed. It's different towards Krn Lake, where conditions look much more wintry. Plenty of visitors, which given the conditions is no surprise. Weather will probably hold for at least two more days, then Krn will be snow-covered by the end of the week.

Last night, 17.12.13, we gathered proper two Primorska calibers and Ljubljana roe deers, and set off from planina Kuhinje at 20.00 under the shine of the full moon to Krn. The path and atmosphere were fairy-tale like, words can't describe it, better to attach pics from the top.

Lately on one portal there was a question if there are avalanches under Krn, normally yes there are.
