Hi! Interested in conditions to Krn summit via path - "Dom v Lepeni - Krn" Does it have lots of snow at the top, need ice axe or is the path mostly bare? Thanks and greetings from Croatia!

On Wed, 18.6, I went from Planina Kuhinja over Krn to the lakes to Lepena. Let me say, the whole north side is still snowy. The first part and step onto snow is the hardest, then it goes. It's good to have crampons at least at the start. That means from the lakes up, you definitely need gear. Regards

22.06. we were at Krn Lake and Gomišček shelter on Krn. We went up from home in Lepena via Hut at Krn Lake and to the Saddle via Batognica on the south side. ...We descended to Krn Saddle which is still deep under snow and therefore I recommend to bypass it because it is under a very steep snowfield. I recommend crampons. The pictures from Sunday show the situation best:

Today Krn from Drežnica, via Silva Koren path. At the start I met two Austrians, (together the whole tour) sunny, clear weather. 9 degrees at bivouac around half past nine. Arrival at climbing section, foggy and cold. Path slippery and wet, fog to the top. Pegs in place, no peculiarities.

For some time still, you need to carry winter gear (crampons and ice axe) with you in our high mountains, just one snowfield crossing can be fatal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yesterday I went from Kuhinja to Krn and then descended to Krn Lake to Lepena. On the descent I met dozens of people, children, none had crampons. I don't say they are not needed, they can ease descent or ascent, but my opinion is that if you are a bit used to snow, especially if it is soft, there is no fear of slipping somewhere. THIS I say for the mentioned mountain, for others where it is steeper it's a different story.

Is winter gear needed for the path to Krn from Drežnica via the Silva Koren path? Thanks for the reply.

Greetings, we were on Silva Koren path 06.07. on Krn. At the beginning, right at the entrance to the rock there is one snowfield, but it creates no problems. Further to the top no snow, and the path is beautiful. No need for winter gear. Good luck and enjoy
