Today on the southern slope of Krn helicopter rescue due to snake bite. Although it's quite rare, caution is of course not superfluous, not only on Krn. Nicer news - the hut is open. The best caretaking couple has returned to Krn, Nives and Dejan will arrange everything necessary in the coming days and prepare Gomišček shelter for upcoming visitors.

Four times up and down to two-thousanders and a nice garland formed above Krn Lake. Nice, and if you weren't running, you had to walk exceptionally fast Good luck further

Yesterday to Krn via one of the longer routes - from Planina Prode. The lion's share of elevation gain we do quite quickly, as there's a nice mulatiera to Prehodci. The path then flattens out considerably, when it starts ascending again comes (at least in sunny weather) the most exhausting part - across Požganina to Piramida. Well, the path isn't technically demanding at all, slope isn't extreme either, but it really burns there. I've walked it several times before, but always downhill, uphill feels quite different. At Piramida we met another group (before we were alone all the way), who came running from the opposite direction and after our break we left them the only shade around Continued to Batognica and then just descent to Krn Saddle and to the top of Krn. Although the forecast from the previous day said no rain, we still got a few drops. But really just a few drops. Towards Prehodci it looked wetter. And it actually rained there, as the ground was nicely soaked in places. Wonderful tour, but quite long. With fairly moderate pace and quite long breaks it totaled almost exactly 13 hours.

Hi @Trobec, I think you have a Bearded Vulture on the picture. Golden Eagle has different wings, different tail and also different colors. Maybe @Ornitolog will say something Best.

This is the Bearded Vulture (in Italian il grifone), from the Cornino reserve near Humin (Gemona del Friuli). There, next to the reserve, is also a fairy-tale emerald lake, both the vultures and the lake are well worth seeing. I saw the most of these vultures on Monte Brancot above Braulins, which is somehow midway between the reserve and Humin. Beautiful birds! http://www.riservacornino.it/chi-siamo/flora-e-fauna/

Definitely a vulture, there are quite a few around Krn if there's some carrion. Up to 10 circle around. Eagles are very rare, you need lots of luck to spot one. Turbo, how do you know they are Italian? Supposedly Croatian ones often fly here too, or is it the same thing? (I don't know much, just asking)

In the Cornino reserve they told me that their vultures also glide over Mali and Veliki Karman (Monte Cuarnan and Chiampon) and over Muzec, besides the Carnic Alps of course, so I assumed they are theirs. They also said that griffon vultures are also on Cres, but for those Krn seems simply too far.

Yes, then I figured it has too white a head for an eagle

Those griffon vultures clean up all carcasses from Polovnik and on the hills above Soča towards south, often also like to glide with paragliders, I experienced personally, when they were returning south in autumn, above Lijak near NG, magnificent bird, very peaceful, at least 10 circled above us, an event you don't forget

Hello, you correctly identified it, it's the griffon vulture. In our region 3 species of vultures occur (griffon, cinereous and bearded vulture), the griffon is the most common. They come to our Alps both Italian and Croatian specimens from the island of Cres. This is shown by findings of ringed birds. When such a bird "catches" favorable air currents, it can fly from Cres to our Alps without a single flap. For gaining height they absolutely need thermals. Paragliders search for them too, so they often end up in the same place. Vultures are very useful, unfortunately not everyone is aware of that.

I just criticized them for being rare, and they shut my mouth - today around Krn two wonderful mountain eagles, one younger and one adult. Shame I'm much less handy with a camera than with binoculars of course it's best to see them live, so if anyone is near Krn today definitely look at the sky

I'm interested in times from Drežnica via Silva Korena path. Does anyone know how much walking time from Drežnica to the start? How much climbing from there to Gomiščkovo shelter?

Without exaggeration. From Drežnica to the start of Silva Korena path about two hours (not fast pace) and to Gomiščkovo shelter below Krn summit at same pace another two and a half hours. Total about four and a half hours of not too fast ascent. Written and said without exaggeration. Start at seven in the morning at the trough in Drežnica and without fear of time pressure you'll be just right on top of Krn when the bell rings for lunch in Drežnica...

@Crazy climber, let me add, the path from Drežnica to the shelter and further to the Krn summit I walked on 18/06/2017; we took 4 hours with moderate walking, full loop ca. 6:30. Of course now the temperatures will do their thing. So if you decide, at least start at 5. http://www.hribi.net/trenutnerazmere.asp?slo=1&id=4805
