Starting point is planina Kuhinja above village Vrsno. I myself haven't been up there lately so maybe car only to the village.

Krn February 28. I followed advice and dressed. But today on Krn warm and no wind. I was the only foot hiker. Behind me two guys with skis. After ten o'clock I started walking. Had to drive around via Most na Soči and through Tolmin, because complete block in Čiginj 8-16. Nothing for it. Huge snow on slab and below too as soon as start walking. Sank in places. Wherever. No tracks. Wind previous days swept all. Went over walls of Kožljak. Descended there too. Quite steep. Didn't choose variant under Batognica because probably cornices there.

Start of the path, where it was already collapsing in some places lower down.

Warm at the shelter. I couldn't have used the winter room.

Krn 9 March. We went earlier. Because we feared snow softened. But could walk. Morning some clear sky. Then no more. Went to top. Stopped at shelter by two skiers who came today up. Some new snow on slab. Last descent part sank a lot. Slopes not seen on descent because thick fog.

nice to walk on the slab. We reached the shelter quite quickly.

You sighed with relief. The other two were also at the top.

I barely saw it when we went to the top.

Krn today 15/03/2018 seems it didn't want guests, so it wrapped itself in thick fog early in the morning. With a friend we started at 4:45 from the parking lot at Planina Kuhinja. No snow below anymore, it starts around 1200m, wet sinking snow. In such thick fog it was senseless and dangerous to summit, but the friend wanted badly to go up. After almost 4h we reached the shelter elevation 2190m, but due to too thick fog we didn't see it; I didn't dare go too far west, fearing precipice and hidden traps. We decided to go to the valley before snow and wind erase tracks and we lose orientation completely.

Krn from pl. Kuhinja, good conditions for hikers and ski tourers. On top there was little wind, on the way back it sank ca. 5 cm, more lower down, descended two gullies, the last one. At the end also viewed the waterfalls.

Krn was today just as I wanted it. From clear skies to clouds and wind on top. I didn't worry about what the snow would be like or if it would sink. At nine I started walking. Below on the meadows it was spring. Above planina Zaslap snow. Lots of snow. There I put on crampons. Nothing sank. Who would have thought? Lots of skiers today. Fewer hikers. Last to leave the summit. Met Matej but didn't recognize him. The shelter is nicely decorated. Like winter. The sun burned me well today. Down it sank because the snow softened.

I put on the windbreaker only below the summit on the ascent.

I didn't need gloves to the summit either.

When I go alone I don't worry about the clock. I was on top at 12:30. I had more than enough time. I know the path very well. But I didn't photograph the snow in piles ready to slide when temperatures rise. Somewhere in the middle before you reach the slab. Therefore, whoever walks there - be careful.

Sorry for the remark but in winter times the departure or return time is one of the most important things - especially in such conditions as yesterday (sunny, relatively high temperatures and humidity).

The fact is that avalanche conditions in the afternoon (or already midday) hours are SIGNIFICANTLY worse than morning ones - especially the Krn slope, which is exposed to the sun all day.

Depends on how much time you spend on the ascent. I asked how long they took. Very different. Boštjan M. gets there in less than two hours. If the snow doesn't sink, as it didn't on Monday, you can get there in three and a half hours as written below. I stick to my path more to the left. It's true that the steepness tires you if you go straight. So better zigzag. That's how the track was made where pedestrians walked. It's true that when it's warmer you need to start earlier because the snow will sink even more on descent. In summer the descent is also quite hot if you go via the slab. nasmeh

Double-edged sword. In fact the worst accidents on Krn slab were not due to avalanches but slips. And for those it's muuuuch more dangerous in the morning ...

In the evening and night from 2.4. to 3.4. several ground avalanches occurred in the Krn mountains (also below the slab), one larger also in Lužnica. Fortunately in the evening and night...

On Saturday we ascended Srednji vrh via Desna grapa (lower part left branch). Below it sank quite a bit, upper part was hard. Followed by traversing Srednji vrh, then from the saddle between Batognica and Vrh nad Peski we skied under Krnska škrbina. Base mostly hard with some softer parts. Ascent to Škrbina via left steeper part, then some on foot, others on skis directly to Krn summit. Descent from top (at 11) via the gully excellent powder (same reported from normal route via flank). Via avalanche tongue Franci, Bojan, Jože and little me reached down to 1100m.

The forecast for yesterday showed very warm weather, like the last few days, so it would be sensible to start early. And indeed I set off before 5, so soon after 6 I started from Kuhinja. 2 cars were already there, just some Italians arrived. I went past Slapnik and Zaslap, on dry ground to the top of the ridge towards Kožljak, then turned right. At the saddle a somewhat thicker snow cover starts, which was frozen all the time. Not even the ice axe went very deep. Towards the top it's the classic. Ice axe, crampons and knee biting. Or zigzag.
The view was really wonderful today. On the top it was a bit windy, but left of the hut there was some shelter. Enough for a snack and beer nasmeh

. Then crowds started pouring towards the top, mostly skiers. Today over 40 people went up for sure.
On descent the snow was noticeably more soupy, around 1800-1900m it started sinking. And at 9:30. Yes, those going up now didn't have ideal conditions anymore.
For the descent I chose a different path than up and went as far as possible on snow. In winter boots descent on soft snow is much more comfortable nasmeh

and faster, so I was already in the valley at 10:30. I don't know if I've ever come down from a 2000er so fast.

But at our place they have already wilted.

I met them with Jože as they descended from the shelter a bit lower. Although I didn't think at all I'd meet them. I was completely alone at the top. It was calm. On the way down snow was sinking as it's time to melt. Up I went as usual on my paths over the Kožljak wall, down also there.

whom do I meet? Under the shelter there are two. In white-and-blue outfit.

but today I didn't need a hat, gloves or windbreaker at all.

Few visitors today, despite such a nice warm day.

Laško beer was excellent. Let it be for the turbot.

Well deserved for Ločanka, since she chose exactly the angelic day.

I wanted to climb Krn still in snowy conditions, as Darinka's frequent visits there really excited me nasmeh

Yesterday was really a special choice for this event. The meadows under Krn are already nicely spring-colored as a true contrast to the snowy peaks in the background.
Already on the way wonderful views opened, especially my views drifted to Škofič and Rdeči rob, also Vrh nad Škrbino with its tip really sparkling in the sun.

At the top a complete winter fairytale, views clear and sharp all the way to Ankogel and Hochalmspitze, which always thrill me from there in the background.

Return over quite soaked snow, but down on the butt from Krn I wouldn't go anyway. It could be too fast and too far nasmeh

Meeting with Darinka on the same track was really a pleasant surprise that needed to be toasted with Laško beer in Kobarid.
