It was horrible, there were times of artillery and both sides had heavy howitzers and mortars, and so many victims are the result of artillery and the rise of machine guns that mowed down attackers wave after wave mercilessly. Really, whoever experienced that had extraordinary luck.

The worst must have been the psychological effect of heavy shell strikes for three whole days without water, food, care for the wounded, etc., thundering to Zagreb and even further the thunder heard in the atmosphere; we can't imagine it, it really is.

Aleš, of course we can't imagine it, but the soldier in the trench didn't know either, because he knew only about himself and his platoon a bit better what was happening. Nonoti fought on both sides, and they knew like all soldiers what they were told; they added something like all people. If someone of yours was from around there, he later told what they told him - all the population was evacuated and locals from Bovec and places by the front returned home only after the end of the war.
Also regarding official commissions, there's no need for illusions that they carried half a million bodies from the front and did identifications.
We probably still remember how, just over twenty years ago in Croatia and in BiH, they were counting the dead; each side always has official data adapted to its interests. And how many dead were there among us in World War II? Again, nobody knows exactly.
But for a hundred years ago, we supposedly have data and believe them just because we read them?

To be clear, the poor soldiers certainly suffered terribly both physically and mentally. But merely inflating the number of victims to some heights helps no one, neither their memory nor historical memory. That's what it's about.

Yes, this war was a war of attrition completely different from the second one; numbers of victims nobody actually knows exactly, as not at Verdun and Somme or Marne in France or Ypres in Belgium, like with us in the mountains and the Gorizia area and surroundings, and probably it will never be known. Time has erased the wounds and there is peace; the memory of the suffering soldiers has remained for us hikers as a warning and remembrance, who like to go to our beautiful peaks like Krn and Batognica and other peaks around.

Well @ales50 go up to Batognica and pray one Our Father or two, for those soldiers, they'll have more from that than from your hammering.

Tadej,
if it's not too much trouble for you, move the military stuff to another section, let Krn stay Krn, [and] let those who found eternity there continue to rest in peace.

Pikica, I'm not hammering, that was reality, now it's peace and only that is important, I love these peaks and I love peace before annoying people, Lp

10.11.2019, Wonderful Sunday morning more like early spring than start of winter which started showing teeth 500m higher, wildlife still holding on at foot of Krn, chamois grazing in pleasant sunshine.
With friend, equipped with all winter gear though didn't need it as track already made though narrow in spots, slowly trudged to top, snow meter by meter more, near meter before summit, fine without crampons. Weather pure poetry you could wish for, views gorgeous unforgettable.

Krn 20.11.2019. The weather forecast was not promising at all. Cloudy in the Julian Alps, no views. We said we'd turn back if it didn't go. We didn't know the conditions. Does the snow collapse? And how much is there? We were the only hikers the whole day. Snow starts above 1800 m. We followed the path as long as possible. But there were cornices. The snow was collapsing. But we persisted. Put on crampons, stowed poles, used winter gear. The slope is steep; if you slip, no rescue unless you have an ice axe and know how to use it. It snowed all the ascent. The last part took quite some strength. After 4.5 hours of walking reached the hut. Immediately to the summit. Lots of snow visible. As if the sky apologized for the week of rain, the sun peeked out. Wintry but still. Didn't stay long on top, cold and windy. Descent demanding. Snow collapsing. Followed our track from the ascent. Tenth time this year.

Thanks Uroš. More info that might help someone. Today they fixed the entrance to the winter room in the hut. We couldn't enter on 20.11. because the lock was frozen and the door wouldn't open. Installed metal shutter like usual when the hut is closed.

Yesterday, our restless heart pulled my dear and me out again, somewhere higher, above the clouds; we both decided to check it out. The weather forecast was fine, so we headed towards Krn and hit the jackpot. From the Kuhinje pasture, we went into the already almost too warm sun, which was occasionally covered by fog and reminded us that it's still winter anyway. On the summit, wonderful views all the way to the sea, which shone illuminated by the sun. To the east, an impenetrable sea of clouds into which one would just jump and swim. Conditions, as I already wrote, were ideal and without wind. Consequently, there were quite a few visitors too. But it needs to be emphasized once again, as the predecessors already wrote, that it's winter on the summit and winter gear is necessary.
After a quite substantial stay on the summit, we headed to the valley, where after breaking through the fog midway, the sun waited for us again. At the car, the thermometer said it all.nasmehnasmeh

Oh yes, already done many times. In beautiful, gloomy, after rain and also in rain. Last time not long ago. Hm, for winter ascent we probably lack some experience. But one day... nasmeh
