Don't just put up cairns like that, especially not if you're a beginner on trackless paths... so you don't lure people behind you off optimal routes that you might have missed. And for other principled reasons others can say. If I put cairns where I first stumbled onto Kuk above Gulci (in fog) someone would curse me hard. But I didn't, 'cos I don't do that. Btw, for left turnoff to cross hunters' path don't follow cairn but look for, well, obvious hunters' path and sign "<- KUK" on tree...

OK, thanks . Yeah, cairns I built where it was visible they were knocked down, and some half-standing ones I upgraded a bit, in "wall" from Gulc I put nothing 'cos plenty there. Next time I'll follow this advice

You just stay enthusiastic about trackless paths (and I wish you safe steps!), just please leave paths as you found them, not leaving signs at every bend that you were there. As I wrote in the Škrnatarica thread - normal route to Kuk suddenly on sections became overdone with skinny cairns to the point it's comical. No need for a new cairn at every turn of a *well visible* trail. And here I'm not complaining that Martuljek is no longer like years ago. No cairn litter on these paths last year nor early June this year - obviously exploded in the last weeks. Also in June the path to Brinova glava was still nicely minimally marked, as always (once on trail, signs are superfluous except legendary smiley on tree). And what surprised me on Friday? Well, this on the lower picture.

Horrifying! Best to report to the police that you found two new cairns.

Well, if we're honest, neither the approach to Kuk's Peak nor the approach over Brinova Glava are pathless; it's just an unmarked trail, as it's quite trodden... I'm also against putting up new cairns myself; there are enough old ones everywhere. Especially the charm of these paths is that you look for logical passages yourself (that's why I often miss markers on marked paths myself, because the logical continuation seems elsewhere to me... but that's another story....).

Come on, now you're exaggerating a bit. Yes, someone probably marked a key orientation point on the path. This has happened throughout history.

Okay, yeah, I'm learning slowly:: but with GPS up there comes some cairn right so you don't mess up... yeah, on Brinovi I wasn't there so they built skyscrapers too bkm fan of pathless without cairns or with fewer

Cairns never bothered me. Especially if placed at key orientation points on the path, as jax already mentioned. But lately they appear more massively, especially on "tourist" paths, sometimes even very massively. I assume families with children do that. For them it's play, creating to distract during strenuous hiking. But there's no need for us adults to do the same in high mountains. Dejan and I recently noticed something similar on descent from Pelci. Cairns were in the lower part, on wooded ridge, placed quite thoughtlessly. Usually where they weren't needed at all. But I don't remember seeing them there years ago.

Okay, even at key spots cairns not all the time.. I'll keep it in mind for next time thanks for all the advice ;

Some are never pleased, nothing at all. They'd most like private mountains. But that'll be hard especially this year with influx of newfangled corona-hikers. And maybe worth considering ban on climbing unmarked paths within Triglav National Park (disturbing animals and destroying vegetation).
