@pikica1: True, a dog senses your mood and energy. So just your awareness that you can defend yourself if you have something like that handy will surely scare off at least 50 percent of dogs. Dogs that come and sniff don't bother me, I like to pet them and sometimes we cuddle nicely. And I've gotten used to dogs that jump on you too. The main problem there is dirty clothes. Well, the other day a couple even apologized to me for it. Aggressive dogs bother me though, the ones that bark from afar, growl, rush at you, tear clothes... and behind such dogs there's usually an unbalanced owner. Nothing helps here but decisiveness, especially towards the owner, because the intent of such dog lovers is terror and nothing else. @zavest: what about those who don't like you? In real life you just try to ignore them as much as possible or exclude them from your life. As much as you can. It's not always (fully) possible. @primoza: Koreans only got famous for that when the Olympics were there, saying 'they eat dogs', boycott them. That's just another stupidity of these self-proclaimed 'NGOs' and various fighters for rights of who knows who. That's intolerance to foreign culture. And hypocrisy. Indians could be horrified just the same because we eat beef, Muslims and Jews because we eat pigs. Those dirty animals! Yuck! Otherwise dogs are eaten in China too for example and elsewhere in Asia. Less known, because when Olympics were there no one made a fuss about it. China is too important. You can see these righteous organizations aren't non-governmental at all but under influence of governments, politics and elites. And it shows here and was seen in the US, in those protests half a year ago.

ločanka, probably with dogs it's similar to people. Among them there are also those you can easily say: Look at him, you're a fool, you know!

Probably it would be better to warn hikers and mountaineers: Look out for Bojan with his dog! Based on his behavior, his dog belongs to that other category of dogs I mentioned in the post above. Likewise, it would be good to warn the fairer sex in front of him, at least based on what one of them told me about him. And I also know one employed at UKC, but I'm not vengeful.

My late grandma always said that those who don't like animals have the same attitude towards fellow humans. She might be right, who recognizes themselves in what role is another story

I don't know, the opposite surely doesn't hold, as we know: 'The more I know people, the more I like animals' or 'People make me animal-like, animals human-like'. This applies to some individuals on this forum too. Some dog owners, mostly those from the other group, have strange logic e.g. as if a snake or spider lover would say that whoever doesn't like those creatures doesn't like animals in general. If anyone asks me, a higher percentage of people I don't like than animals. I have zero interest in dedicating a section to them on my blog. https://simsoneblog.wordpress.com/category/zivali/

Sometimes I feel that precisely those very attached to animals forget that people live right next to them who might need some help. As for dogs, they are not the problem at all, the problem is only owners who don't know where their “freedom” ends.

Regardless of how much dogs rule, dogs that are dangerous to those around must be under control!!! Such dogs must never be let loose or roam freely. If they are anyway, they must be supervised, which the owner ensures. I agree that the dog reflects the owner, but the dog is the one that bites. When Nessy was little, three months old, an aggressive German Shepherd attacked us (the dog had attacked multiple times before, the owner had been reported to police). Since we have had dogs at home my whole life, I knew how to react properly, no bite happened. Still filed police report, should do same here. If a dog is reported 2x for attacking dog or person, entered in dangerous dogs register, must always be supervised, on walks leashed and muzzled. Don't know how it became ok for dog to attack passersby freely, owner does nothing. When such dog bites your dog or god forbid you/child, you'll see differently.

Bravo Polona! Finally a sensible post from a dog owner. Totally agree. Some will never understand that the problem isn't other people (who dogs should be warned about), nor their dog but themselves.

A Bernese Mountain Dog bit my thigh while I was walking on the local road past an isolated house in the Škofja Loka hills. The dog was unleashed and came onto the road and grabbed me. I was totally shocked because I had headphones on and my mind was elsewhere, so I noticed it only when it was already biting me; it also tore my pants leg. The owner came to the house balcony and chased it back to the yard; on my informing her about the bite, she just said: "A ja?" Nothing, couldn't she at least offer some help, damn it, at least bring gauze and alcohol since I'd told her her dog had bitten me Since then I always have spray in my pocket, and I've already used it three times. I'd say the dog really smells fear and then goes for you. I'm still so damn sorry that I didn't report it then and possibly file a civil suit to hit them in the pocket. But I was simply too shocked, as I'd lived 40 years without a dog bite despite many farm dogs that had already barked at me on mountain trails. A ja, and it hurt me for almost five months there where the bite was.

Ana, it's really a pity you didn't report it, I definitely would have. Attacking dogs should never and under no circumstances be let loose! I believe it was a shock, especially if you didn't notice it before. Generally Bernese mountain dogs are not considered an attacking breed, so in your case the owner was definitely guilty, who encouraged the aggression or didn't respond appropriately. Such a one learns only when hit in the pocket. I hope you're OK now and don't fear all dogs because of this, most are still friendly and cuddly

Ouch, so many problems from one pup. Not dog problem, you hikers make problems yourselves. Who fears dog should simply avoid it and pass as if not there, not wave sticks and chase it, then dog feels threatened. Everyone guards territory, so brains on, animal has none.
