Viharnik... I sign under it! Here in the valley it's really hard, up there it's paradise.

Viharnik, probably it was really an interesting experience, but because of such "tsars" our husbands and friends expose themselves in the mountains when they go to rescue you.
Have you ever thought about that?

Well, that ascent wasn't anything critical, similar to Šmarna gora, just that I had to drive a bit longer to the starting point. If it hadn't pulled so much on the ridge and snow had flown directly into the face, I would have reached the top. If there had been need, surely. Regards!big grin

Sometimes it's necessary to experience even some worse weather to better appreciate and respect the mountains when they bask in the sun. Viharnik didn't climb a demanding peak but ascended towards Mojstrovka, to which in winter under even worse conditions crowds of mountaineers and ski tourers ascend. When conditions became unfavorable he knew to turn around and that's what carries weight. Many never find that limit.

Today 27.7. via Hanz's to MM. Around 10am fog enveloped the top so the views were over. In between M. and J. showed briefly. At the top snow to the knees if you kneel.
Behind us more hikers came via Hanz's. Interesting how few use helmets, let alone self-protection.

This isn't interesting, it's sad that so few use a helmet, let alone self-protection. Safe steps everyone!!!

Even within PD they don't use protection on Hanz's path.

Helmets are there anyway.
If I were a PD leader I certainly wouldn't take responsibility and lead groups without self-protection on such a path and tremble when someone slips. Not that something couldn't be done even where you can't clip in, but risk must be minimized.
On the other hand they used to climb all these paths without protections and helmets.

Last year a few minutes after I got mad that I had the helmet on my head just to make it even hotter a stone flew onto it. Since then I don't think about it anymore.
But the self-belaying kit I haven't used yet...

Nata24, that's the point too, the stone flew onto the helmet... a bit of fear, moment of distraction, instead of grabbing the cable you grab air, and an awkward step... if you have/use self-belaying kit it somehow works out...

Or you spot a snake eek
I know all that but so far it didn't seem necessary to me.

Yes, it's true, mountains need to be experienced also in worse conditions and not always in the sun and oh and ah... I agree a lot with that because then you get a more holistic picture and appreciate things...
But it's not just the head, a flying stone from steep cliff can easily break your forearm or legs if you're stretched out...

Good luck and smartly!nasmeh

Yes, a lot is talked about helmet. Is a cycling one suitable?

My personal opinion. It's not exactly suitable, but better than nothing.

In every store where they sell mountaineering gear. And check a bit online. There was already a lot of talk about it on this site.

Today we started in a wonderful morning from the parking at Jasna to Mala Pišnica. Along Pišnica, now left, now right, path is, path isn't, until we reach the hunter's hut, from there up to Grlo. From there very nice views westwards, led by Jalovec. We continue over Sleme, where there were crowds of visitors, then to Vratca, where hordes of hikers join us again (sadly have to write, improperly equipped foreigners in sneakers, no spare clothes,.. esp. Hungarians, German speakers,..). At entry to climbing part of "Hanzova" they let us go ahead at least. On top really colorful crowd, Hungarians, Poles, Germans, Italians, some wanted to go down Hanzova with kids without self-belay sets, luckily we dissuaded them. We descend to Grebenc, on the way we meet families with small kids still pushing up though peaks already in fog (again improper gear, esp. sneakers, no warm clothes). Soon below Grebenc we take shortcut to Vršič over scree (need to stay more left as scree splits, right to bushes with harder passage at end, left no problem). Since Erjavčeva hut seems least commercialized to us, refresh there, then descend mostly shortcuts to Jasna.
