Matkova Kopa

Nice pic of Škaf from above.nasmeh
Hope it's not someone clearing the path on their own initiative, but the owner.
Already last year in upper part I noticed someone "pinching" juniper branches. No need!

Matkov kot – Matkova krnica – Krničko sedlo (to the ridge over luska) - Krnička gora (descent via gully past cave) – up to Krničko sedlo – back down to Matkova krnica – Matkova kopa (up and down central gully below it) – Matkov kot (conditions 16.8.2018)

Whenever possible I like circular hikes, here two short repeats are mandatory though, all praise to Vili who in this wild, pristine and hard-to-reach world above Matkov kot chose "nice" paths so we didn't have to fight bushes.
More on conditions and wonderful world above Matkov kot in comments under pics, briefly: start of path in Matkov kot still lots of fallen trees on forest paths hindering access and orientation to hunters' trail, once on it up to Matkova krnica no issues, then over scree mostly left edge and below wall to Krničko sedlo, short harder part over luska to ridge needs more care due to loose crumbly rocks, higher use bushes, from mid-ridge traverse down into gully by bushes coming up from Austrian side, then to top bit left then more right side of gully (some red dots on rocks here and there), direction to top obvious anyway. From Krnička gora start descent bit more left helped by bushes, then into gully past cave down towards krnica in Belsko Kočna but not too far as need back to Krničko sedlo, up there gully also gravelly and crumbly.
First repeat is scree down from Krničko sedlo to Matkova krnica, there by old wooden hut remains rest and snack. Already below krnica, more so from krnica to Matkova kopa path widely cleared of bushes and branches, probably for hunting tourism, not hikers for sure. On such comfy path continue east, cross a couple more rock gullies to the one with cairn by path (cairns scarce or none here but this one key from this direction to continue to Matkova Kopa), from there almost vertical up. Gully up is wide, bushy overgrown but also gravelly (if group danger of stonefall), to saddle below Matkova Kopa zigzags a bit but well traceable. From saddle to top from left (upward), more from Austrian side, under very top some short airy and bit harder spots. Matkova Kopa actually has three joined peaks a bit separated; though under 2000m great views all around.
Second repeat of short section, descent from Matkova Kopa same gully down, then join comfy cleared path below and continue east to next gully, good to remember prominent rock pinnacle right side of path for descent to Matkov kot. Follows some steep drops no problem but more caution on grass and through sparse forest to rock step with braided alu wire used for power. It's half torn in places but holds human weight, if not trust - take 30m rope. After crossing this gully troubles ease, but trail down through forest drags on, end eased by forest roads. After less than 8 hours descend into dry torrent bed in Matkov kot opposite hunters hut, yeah back quick... Vili has long stride and fast pace.
Although early in the morning, the sun has already illuminated the mountains above Matkov kot1

I think that torn alu wire will stay there until it's fatal for someone.

Interesting how you went around to the top.
Nice tour in this heat.

On pic 3 and 9 it's not Savinjek though.

There where the wire is, can also climb down. Of course very carefully, slippery with scree.

Interesting too how everyone tackles the “luska”. I traverse almost horizontally from saddle across wall to spot where I then climb up to it... and through.

Yes, under that tower above Lusko there's a traverse to the right below it.
Above, you missed the nicest part of the ridge. Along the ridge it's best to the pre-summit on pic 20.
Anyway, there are many variants. That's the charm of pathless terrain. I believe you enjoyed.

If the first from the left isn't Savinjek?!, I'll of course correct the description under the picture; but according to the Grintovci map and the position above Zabrložnica and Matkov.okna, where I hiked some years back, ... it should be. (details maybe on ZS).
As for the tour and approaches to these two peaks, it's really exceptionally interesting, but I recommend to average mountain lovers that they do it the first time with someone who's been up there nasmeh

Unofficially named Red Turn. Probably after the reddish SW overhanging wall.

Yesterday Vinko and I wandered around in Matka's kingdom.
It tempted me to do another section of the ridge before the saddle above Matkova krnica, the so-called Needles (To Krnica Peak), which I myself never tackled. Prle wrote about it in pure superlatives. Much of it holds true, not all. Sadly he can't contradict me anymore, as he's no longer with us.

We started above Lesnik's barns, climbed up to Jerebičje and after descending continued towards Matkova Kopa. Through the windows, up before Matkov Zob and finally via a beautiful chimney gully to the top.
That's when the arduous ridge work really began.
Yesterday my brother, whom I hardly get to these parts, experienced the true exclusivity of Matkova Kopa. He said he thought we'd end the tour at that summit.zmeden
That's when it really started.mežikanje Along the sharp ridge we continued towards Krnička gora, descending very steeply several times through junipers to the left side and finally arrived below the Needles. Of course we didn't skip any, though a bypass on the Austrian side is possible.
The first offered nice climbing, the second was a miniature mix of Rušica and Briceljka, for the third I forgot to take pics, it was so "interesting". Nice descent from the third and we were already rushing along the sweet ridge to Krnička gora. Then EMŠO said, enough for you two today.

Sometimes it's good to listen to your inner voice and end the tour when it's best. Mrzla gora, don't worry, I'll visit again.

Via the ridge and over Matkova krnica we descended to the valley.

Zlatko, definitely. Some of yours and Milan's variants are still available.
How did Igor put it, that he'd need 300 years to cover even a bit?
Don't mind me mentioning you with Prle. But I often think of both, especially Prle. Shame I never got to meet him. I started "ridgeing" too late.
Prle calls this northern ridge to Mrzla gora the great Grintovec ridge. I'd agree. Only Kočna's NW ridge comes close.

It'll be more like Drago's second garden, as he tends it as carefully as his own.
The ridge also deserves the name great ridge in my opinion, where you need quite some arm strength to push through all that undergrowth on the way.
Again a beautiful and unforgettable experience.

Yesterday, my colleague Janez called me if I would join him on Matkova kopa. So I quickly arranged leave and we went. Me and him and 5 girls nasmeh
We parked below Matka's farm and headed up the shepherd path to Matkovo sedlo, on the way we picked up Matkov grintovec and past the tooth up to Matkova kopa.
Descent on the other side and back via shepherd path to Matkovo sedlo and finally visit Jerebičje. We continued straight down and by road to Matka and to the car.
Janez, thanks for leading, girls, thanks for company cool
Nice regards and safe travels!

After "a long time" I was back pottering around these parts yesterday. Successfully escaped the gloomy valley into the enchanting Matkov world.
Over Matkova krnica I climbed to the kopa, which troubled me a bit at the top with fog. On descent the fog dropped back to the valley and settled there. As I didn't want to return to the dark valley too soon, I traversed towards Velika zelenica and Jevševec and under Grintovec slowly back via upper path over Matka to the valley. The crossing into the last gully before Matka is now really tricky due to fallen trees.
