A lot has already been said about this wonderful mountain in previous posts and its grandeur is really great. Most forum posts describe successes and achieved goals, fewer when not everything goes to plan. My description below will be something like that, so I want to share it with you. I've been near Matkova kopa many times, at Matkovo sedlo and Matkova krnica crossing the ridge from Mrzla gora, but never on Matkova kopa slopes. Yesterday late afternoon after weather improvement, my dear and I went only to Jerebičje, but then I instinctively decided to go alone to Matkova kopa, she returned towards Pavličevo sedlo. No trouble approaching the summit. From forums I remembered it's possible via gully at Matkov zob to the top. There was quite some brushwood and exposed climbing. At summit around 20:00. Descended to scree then back to the tooth. Reach double window where it's getting dark. Traverse further right and descend to tooth walls. Downward progress blocked by drop. No back, only option up over saddle at Matkov zob or under wall. Then through gully to approach path which I recognized immediately. In easier forest concentration slips thinking of easier path to Matkovo sedlo, path suddenly lost, slope very steep. Thinking too low head left up and after some 30 m height hit drop ahead, daytime no problem. Experiences from many night hikes, the night itself and fatigue trigger brain alarm, "Time to stop". Though afternoon only to Jerebičje had all bivouac gear in backpack. Report stopped and not coming to valley, dress warm, drink remaining water and doze off. Under almost full moon, stars and no wind doze to dawn. Quite surprised in morning dawn seeing Matkov zob outlines on my left. How possible, should be on slope facing Matkov kot not Austria. But facts different. Fact: last night coming from above missed at path junction, should turn right to Matkovo sedlo but went left (straight at night) to path under Matkov zob. Thinking on south slope or above Matkov kot, correcting left and up actually went back to gully at Matkov zob. Morning showed bivouacked only 10m below path crossed twice yesterday. Morning rested and daylight head back to Jerebičje, admiring surrounding peaks in morning sun. Believe various comments on my post, so no special conclusions, everyone draw own opinion. For me every mountain experience enriches and increases respect for mountains, also experiencing unique magnificent moment like today's morning cuckoo calling waking you in forest instead of village rooster.

Navihan, in your account of the evening Matkova kopa experience maybe not everything went to plan, but certainly one of the more interesting visits offering insights along with pleasures. Many nice wanderings.

After four days of constant siege the beauty kept one overnight..., real mischief-maker.

Navihan, full praise for acting in distress. But not for choosing the time for ascent to such a demanding peak. Regards

Experience that stands out from average descriptions. I was twice very close to a similar situation. Nearly seven dark hours probably weren't that long though...

Yes, the north face of Matkova Kopa also has its transverse (hunter's) path. Mejduš, I can hardly believe I managed to follow it! From Belska Kočna past the waterfall, pathless, found the entry, transverse journey - following in quiet wilderness, somewhat on the edge, descent to Matkova Krnica, ascent to Krničko, below Mrzla Gora to the exit. Royal! All the best.

Though under 2000m, it's really a royal mountain, with many secrets. I believe you enjoyed its "new" path.

Geppo, that's how it's said. Nice to carry out ideas now and then. Dprapr, I spotted this path completely 'by sight'. Last time I noticed it from the opposite ridge of Baba. Definitely one of the wildest hunter's paths in KSA. Its remoteness and overgrowth show that it hardly feels human steps anymore ... Regards.

It's been a long time since I first stepped onto this peak on 11.11.2006 in perfect summer conditions. This time I headed up with Drago thinking it'd be a classic winter hike with crampons and ice axe. Well, it was, but the crampons were just dead weight in the backpack the whole way. Can't remember walking on such rotten snow. With every elevation meter there was more of it and we often sank in up to our waists, steepness increasing too. Luckily I still had the feel of 15000 steps from Saturday's race to Crystal Palace in my legs, Drago was still full of beans anyway and we pushed nicely to the top. Apart from ptarmigans and chamois no living soul anywhere again, not even in the inn on return where we wanted a drink. Orientation was no issue for my mentor - like walking a summer marked trail. For me from years back only the fixed rope on descent (lower part) stuck in memory. Back then it was thick, normal to grab, now it's some thin alu wire, held by just two or three strands in places, can't trust it at all. Overall descent in lower part was demanding at spots for me, ice axe often stuck in steep wet grass if no other holds (rocks, bushes) handy. Drago, thanks again for the great day!
