Igor, thanks for the correction... yes, ibex . Otherwise, I agree with your (and not only your) "philosophy" on when to go to the mountains, only with mine we always have "negotiations" about when to go, because she's a very sleepy type . But really this year we had a few cases (5), when it turned out (water on her mill ), that due to the weather it would have been better if we left home two or even three hours later (well, or really early)... when we were up there was fog, when we descended the fogs cleared and the afternoon weather was wonderful Despite all, I remain a supporter of the idea... to the mountains early...

On Saturday, 28.7.2012, we went with the family to Montaž via Pipan's ladder. The day was sunny and perfect for such an ascent. On the way we also met quite a few ibex, which luckily didn't trigger rocks smile Pipan's ladder is really adrenaline-pumping, as it constantly sways on it and that's 60m. At the same time it's a bit harder if you secure yourself on it with a self-belay harness, but still better, since safety first. At the top there were mostly Slovenes, also at the top we met a large group of some mountaineering club. Pictures from the hike can be seen on the website of Planinsko društvo Matica Murska Sobota: http://www.mojalbum.com/pdmaticams/20120729-montaz/foto/19905018

A week ago towards evening into Dunja valley and sleep under almost full moon under open sky. Next day along Clapadorie gorge to bivouac Suringar. Trail start is quite hard to find, best help is Tabacco map 19 where path is drawn to bivouac Muschi. Junction of pathlet marked with blaze on rock but somewhat higher from road so need to watch well. Further path well marked first with mix of blazes and red dots higher in gorge with dots and cairns. Several times hit short jumps in gorge higher help with old cable. Ambience fantastic all the time hear murmur of eye-hidden Rio di Montasio views stop on walls of Montaža and Jof di Miez M. Zabus... After crossing second bigger gorge path turns sharp left to wide ledge leading to bivouac Muschi. On path can refill water several times at bivouac last chance. Follows poorly marked scramble in gray wall where here and there smells like III (just before wall end is belay). Here red dots run out Exit to left-directed ledge and continuation left side of wall past bolted belay to easier terrain. Up gully straight to Via Amalia path and right to bivouac Suringar. Since legs already tired and desired reached follows return on Via Amalia which has freshly tuned cables to bivouac Stuparich and over Foran de la Grave back to Dunja valley. Magnificent ambience and extremely beautiful tour...

After sunrise on Mangart drove to planina Pecol and headed to Montaz up via harder dol over Pipanovo, up over F.ozebnik stones down to 5 cm flying, plenty easier climbing I grade, over lojtra with others who were on top, no one had self-belay but there too flying down.

You're right about stone rain. I luckily experienced it at bend before descend on cables to Pipanovo ladder so it went past me. Group going up was before bend behind rocks below so went over them. Was quite commotion and shouting. Before them some group went up too and triggered quite stones. Here really dangerous.

Of course slower with self-belay (me too often "don't feel like" using it, but don't encourage people that on Pipanova ladder self-belay not recommended just because above scree plenty someone sends to head or hand ... Jams mainly by those not skilled using via ferrata kit (experienced one 10 days ago when such fiddled all with clipping ) LP

Nobody is encouraging anyone to anything (except maybe to common sense and better judgment, but let's leave that )... Otherwise whoever can't think with their own head when preparing a tour and relies only on opinions of some XY individuals shouldn't go to the mountains...

Montaz definitely isn't a tour for beginners , to the saddle I took a bit of pleasure with fast walking even so some tried hard to be ahead of me , but they quickly stayed way behind, back I went slowly and enjoying the views well yeah, all the time Kanin range.

On Sunday we took time and for a change visited Montaz via classic Kugy Diretta from Zajezera nice solitary tour. PS. entry regarding glacier is very convenient and no crowds either Good luck

After an overnight stay in the Rifugio di Brazza hut, yesterday we ascended Montaz via the path over Pipan ladder. A bit before the summit mists started gathering, obscuring the view to Kanin and Pecol plain. Quite a lot of visitors, mainly Slovenians, no queue on the ladder. Due to the fog which was already quite low on the return, we went back the same path and since we met no chamois on the ascent, we met more on the descent. On Pecol plain the fog around Montaz had completely cleared so we watched Montaz and the surrounding peaks a bit more.

Today we were on Montaz, specifically thru Pipanova ladder, back via ferrata Leva. Up we took 3.5 hours per description, went really easy, photographed chamois, filmed the fight . We were first up, views really super! Ferrata Leva also cool, really nice path, but already quite hot. All in all nice day, just knees hurt . Is Leva comparable to Kanjavec ledges re exposure?(ledge width, cables)

There is some similarity but not comparable. A.E. Leva is fully secured path, whereas Kanjavec ledges are secured only here and there, path not hard but exposed in places, and a bit longer too. Both real gems.

IgorZlodej, thx for info, yeah that interested me cos it was very scenic path, over Zadnjica would be bomb. Otherwise on Leva almost never used full kit (na uni lojtri srm se spela), but some sections nice to grab cables sometimes even no special need

I'm curious how the path to the Suringar bivouac and then through the Findenegg glacier to the Montaz summit is marked. Are the marks visible - I'm asking because on many paths in the Western Julian Alps the marks are poor.

Old and faded markings, but from my experience (admittedly a few years old) still quite visible and usable. Orientation in Findenegg is no particular problem.

I did this path a month ago and from first hand I can say that their path markings can't even remotely compare to ours - at least this path. They are really poorly visible. But you need to watch where you turn into the rocks in the couloir, because nothing is marked. Through the couloir it's free climbing fun and the path is only hinted by those poorly visible markings and somehow mostly we find the best passages ourselves. You can see where most climbing is, the little path is partially visible and you can follow it.

Jax said it nicely. No panic, everything is nicely traceable .
