Ice, snow, avalanches; Pavle Šegula Winter ascents in Slovenian mountains; Vladimir Habjan Alpine school, textbook Dangers in mountains; Pavle Šegula To the summits; Jani Bele and more could be found, more than enough for starters...

timgalema, currently Pd Matica has the course "Winter movement course for demanding tours" announced, excellent course, contact is on their website. You'll be informed there about everything you're interested in and also practically test it.

The girl should first go to a basic winter mountaineering course, hike smaller snowy hillocks, then go to a course for demanding tours.

This can't really be learned from a book, because it's quite practical. In winter time there are many courses announced that will best prepare you for winter tours.

Since I'm also more of a newbie, I've been hiking in mountains for just over a year, in winter I choose easier and less dangerous trails. So last year for example I visited Kopitnik and Mrzlica in snow. Maybe this year some longer tour, but all within normal limits. For safety I prefer areas that are not dangerous (avalanches, slips etc.), if I get more actively into hiking I'll surely buy all winter gear and educate myself about it first. But I don't support heroism in mountains in any conditions.

A tour that's marked as partially demanding unmarked path in summer, but in snow makes our forehead sweat properly, is Lučki dedec from Planina Podvežak, past Kocbekov dom. Most hikers in this season go only to Kocbekov dom, where the path is easy and marked (also trodden), if we want more, we continue to Lučki dedec, where some climbing is needed. The description of the mentioned path on the Lučki dedec page is accurate, if we have a map with us and check the weather, it will be a great winter experience. Good luck

On Saturday who is going to Storžič, how is the path from Mač to Kališče and up? Just wondering if I'll find someone behind me, I don't dare alone.. not yet. How much snow, is that side dangerous for slipping? Thanks

Up to Kališče it will already be trodden, further to Storžič then for experienced not beginners

timgalena, for starters in winter suitable are so-called family tours: Blegoš, Ratitovec, Porezen... anything more is necessarily with someone who knows what they're doing

When I read these forums, I have to laugh too, what some write. I think private life (who washes whose dirty laundry) has nothing to do with safe hikes in mountains. Some are lucky that parents took them on paths from a young age, some weren't that lucky. So I also started quite late to venture into mountains and I'm glad for every post here. We can be happy that someone gives us info on conditions, so no more accidents happen. Since I often go alone and still fulfill myself on paths, sometimes a companion would come in handy to guide me right. In winter I haven't hiked alone yet and I'm a bit scared of snow hikes, so every advice is welcome.

Hello, yesterday (20.11) I was on Peca, where despite the fog I was thrilled by the winter idyll that mountains offer. Peca has a relatively easy approach, which isn't too dangerous even in snowy conditions. I'm interested, since I'm a newbie in this field, which Slovenian mountains (and routes) you would recommend for relatively safe winter ascent to the summit (if we can even talk about safe ). Since I'm not very experienced, I don't want to expose myself too much to avalanches or demanding climbing feats. Thanks for the info, Urban

Hi Urban! You know, real winter hasn't even started yet. Snow has fallen, but there are no fluctuations in temperature yet, which turn snow into ice and consequently the mountaineer's slip. Therefore in mountains in winter always with winter gear even if only to your house "little hill". From my own experiences I advise you this. Every tour depends on current conditions, which prevail on the mountain. I don't know where you are from, to name suitable tours for you. I won't be wrong, if you reach to the end of the forest in mountains before you gather experiences. Good luck!!

Which mountain huts above 1300 m (except Kredarica) are open also in winter for weekends in Slovenia? Okrešelj, Erjavčeva hut on Vršič? Not? And which others?
