Ojstrc (Hochobir 2139m) Austria

Print
jprim12. 05. 2012 22:26:03
In May Obir is already without snow, some small patches still along the path to the summit, how is it from the Šajdna direction - probably the same, we started from Obirski, from guesthouse Kovač, no living soul on the path to the hut, which was surprisingly empty, also on return from summit 4 guests at the hut, though quite a few cars at the parking lot, can't understand why, rolling eyes at home always a crowd at huts ... maybe the hut has a bad reputation?
Wonderful morning, after 12 o'clock the clouds started their dance.

Since the path to Ojstrc-Hochobir from Šajda and also from the hut at Eisenkappler hutte I know from before, this time I tackled visiting this mountain from the north via Mali Obir. Access leads via Borovelje, Šmarjeta to Rož in Gailtal to the village Borovnice behind which I turned right to the start at around 800m. At the junction on a small clearing I turned right south and went along the forest road where traffic is prohibited. The road climbs in countless zigzags to 1580m where there is a small hut at the end. A little before the hut I met foresters who with a super machine processed trunks like toothpicks and blocked the whole road. They were the only ones I met on the tour. Behind the hut at the end of the road I climbed to the narrow grassy ridge and along it to the top of Mali Obir 1948m. From Mali Obir I descended to the alpine pasture Jagouc at around 1700m and then bit into the steep marked but unprotected path which leads to Ojstrc or Hochobir. I descended towards Kapelska hut and just before it turned left into the valley of Podkanjski stream and by road to the start. In the end about 1600m ascent and of course the same descent which I had enough of, especially since there was a lot of road walking. Happy in the mountains!

Yesterday before Romana's night shift we quickly popped to Obir. Path as in most cases chosen from Sajda. On open spots due to clearcut trail wet, otherwise no special features. Yesterday quite some hikers chose Obir as goal. Lp.

29.12.2012 I was again on Velikan. This time I headed up from the Šajda saddle. Fantastic day, phenomenal views, visibility far and wide, below some were in fog - namely Celovec and Ljubljana basin. The path was mostly snowy, towards the top up to half a meter and more of drifted snow. So I sank a bit on some sections. The view from the top unforgettable. I met two ski tourers, but the coffees let me down, there were none for snack.nasmeh

On Friday on Velikan from the Sedlo Šajda direction. The path is dry with beautiful views on Košuta and KSA, from the top the view is even more magnificent. A barefoot guy also came up who walked the mentioned path barefoot; it seems that's the future of hiking on such mountain trails as this. At the top they eat kavke by hand. Nice tour and solid view limited by thermals in the air.

Today on Obir. Start parking below Podkanjski waterfall at only 510m altitude, which made the tour quite strenuous. Then up to summit via north ridge from Jagovčeva planina. Path well (though unofficial) marked, but steep and unprotected. Especially tricky lower part where path goes very steeply up through scrub and all slips badly. Luckily can use strong roots of bushes. Above much nicer, into rocky terrain with some pleasant gymnastics to top. Descended marked path via junction above Kapelska hut. Definitely very nice tour in not often visited areas (well, crowd at top of course ;-) ).
Weather ok, fog below then clear and clouds alternating (unfortunately mostly latter at very top). No snow on path at all, good to know in current conditions.
Anyway, warmly recommend this path to all without big issues with steep scrub and gravel.

Today we chose Obir, started at Šajda, past Kacmunov križ to summit. Descended past hut, had lunch, then via Obirska planina back to Šajda. Walking the loop passed quickly in nice autumn colors and sun.
When we started the sun was already high1

My gaze has stopped many times on mountains north of our border. On the east stands out the peak where Ojstrc summit reigns. Perfect weather lured my wife and me to see this area up close. We took our youngest son along, as his joy for mountains doesn't want to fade this year.
Via winding and long road over Pavličevo sedlo we drove to Šajda saddle. In for the time too high temperatures we hiked nice forest path in shade of trees up to about 1800m. Path rises evenly and nowhere too steep. Above tree line we felt wind strengthening towards top but not too bad. On top quite some people, mostly Austrians but some Slovenes too. Mostly sitting in lee on east side of mountain. Views solid but much more foggy than "stankoju" had few days ago.
Yes nice autumn colors still there.nasmeh

Unsuccessful attempt on Obir today. From Železna kapla to the hut it's no go without snowshoes, also full of broken trees, snowdrifts, avalanche danger, snow over the waist, basically impassable. If planning summit definitely start from Šajda. From Železna kapla or Suha better not as you'll curse everything on the list.jezik

On Sunday 25.5. we ascended to Obir from Kurnikovo sedlo. First on foot along asphalt road to Eisenkappler Hütte, then further to top mostly in fog. Practically no snow on path, just white patches right below summit. No views from top unfortunately, our peaks also in fog, still lots of visitors on mountain, which I think suitable for start of summer season when still snow elsewhere.
Clouds surround the peak1

Obir is lush and blooming. It flowers from top to bottom through the seasons, from alpine snowbells and primroses to cloudberry, masterworts and Carniolan lilies. Some more flowery impressions, otiv probably won't mind. Otherwise circular path Šajda-peak-hut-Šajda without special features.

Lidija, I'm really glad,
that blooming Obir has captivated you.
Flowers always ensure,
that the mountain shines even more.
You surely experienced this today,
when with your gaze you embraced the mountain and flowers.nasmehmežikanje
