Fog prevented my original plan today, so I only went to Škrlatica. Today Škrlatica had plenty of visitors. I started at 7.00 and returned at 14.30. The wall doesn't allow rushing, nor mistakes, and requires full concentration (especially downhill). In the wall, the first third has protections sparingly placed, the second third has enough protections, the third third is free climbing, not too demanding. The height difference didn't tire me, the non-stop concentration in the wall did.

Yesterday very enjoyable on Skrlatica. Started at 7 a.m., up by 12 p.m. in a lazy pace. Both ascent and descent were mostly foggy and cloudy. Lower part muddy rocks, higher nice passable and without peculiarities. By the way: if anyone still expects water from snowfields under Dolkova - not a chance! Except for some glimpses, we got sun only 100 m below summit. Views limited of course, but standing on top of Skrlatica is always a privilege in itself! Gleaming cloudiness caused big problems to my very lame camera (on mobile). Still posting some (conditionally) acceptable pics.

Well, second attempt on Skrlatica succeeded for me and son too. (Met SunBurned - you chatted below.) Although I almost gave up not going up, a lady motivated me so I decided to conquer Skrlatica anyway and no regrets. Conditions as described above. Otherwise for me regular hiker harder ascent than Triglav. SVK seems recommendable at least for first-timers not "sure" although not many pegs at least for better feeling. I didn't have it. Quite a few even foreigners had it. Time within normal exactly as described. Worth it, lots of encouragement from other "conquerors" of Skrlatica too. Very happy I made it.

@mojčman: I remember you two too. Met you all three below when your husband asked where I'm going, then met again when I was descending. Anyway congrats to all three. @sunburned: Which one were you? I was up at 11.00, descending at 12.00. Wow, Stenar opened nicely for you.

Flora1 Thanks! Congrats to you too! Seemed so from your post that we met. I read your posts here up anyway. Yes we needed a bit more time as we arrived in Vrata already pitch dark. SunBurned Thanks same!

Today, despite the late hour, I decided to visit. Already at the entrance to Vrata valley I noticed that the weather wouldn't be the best, but since I was alone, I didn't change the plans I had talked about at home. The whole way mists accompanied me, here and there the tiny sun peeked out, just enough to get the feeling... Forecasters failed a bit again... Despite no views, it was a very nice tour

What are the conditions like from Vrata to Skrlatica?

The path is dry. You cross some snowfields, but it can be done without winter gear too. Lp

Where are those snowfields?

The first snowfield is below bivouac IV Na rušju, at the foot of the eastern wall of Stenar, which you can bypass right along the extreme gully or left on a less visible trail. The next is right of the bivouac when heading to Škrlatica, but it can be crossed without problem as it's gentle. Two snowfields are also on the screes under the southern ridge of Škrlatica before entering the secured part of the path, which you can also bypass left with a bit easier scrambling. Otherwise ice axe in hand and no problem

Yesterday I parked on the 3rd Vršič serpentine and headed to Krnica. Crossed the stream and soon at the chapel, from there not far to Koča v Krnici. At the hut still quiet, I went to the foot of Kriška stena. Terrain quite wet from rain, but mountain vibe and blue sky great, path to wall base quick. At climbing start still fairly steep and not very soft snowfield nicely joining marked path start in wall. Future caution due to extreme gully. For safety put on crampons and took ice axe. Path over wall well-trodden and lots of loose scree, careful. On return saw people with all gear but no helmets, the most important . At wall edge decided to try to Škrlatica. Under Dovški Gamsovec and before descending cross/bypass some easy snowfields, then to Rdeča škrbina bp. Descending notch to Škrlatica another big snowfield bypassable. Weather worsening here, hurried to Škrlatica top, few pics, sip and quick turn. At Dolkova špica junction chatted bit, then sure weather worsen returned to Kriška stena edge descend to Krnica. Many just starting ascent then, my weather "panic" unnecessary as held (thunderstorms forecast early afternoon ). Then descent to hut over pastures to Vršič road. Nice tour!
