Tomorrow I'd take my dear from Vršič to Slemen Peak. Curious about conditions? Is the path dry all the way? She gets chills just mentioning snow smile

There now, with sun already quite low, it'll be shady and cold, probably all the way to the top of Slemen Peak. Snow lingers only under Mojstrovka wall. But plenty of sun in Karavanke, Bohinj ridge, Pokljuka ridge and Julian foothills. Nice hike then!

I was up there on the 15th and the path was completely dry. True though early morning till 11-12 no sun. A bit later it does caress Slemen. Or some other choice as viharnik said. Nice day and enjoy it well. big

Morning start at Vršič towards Slemen. Path to saddle normally trodden and from saddle on all fine. Later track turned left leading us more under Mojstrovka wall. There we both got a bit of snow blindness, all white and track barely visible and very cold too. Snow mostly crusty, sometimes knee deep. Well, in the end all turned out nice and after last quite strenuous ascent the familiar views appeared. Descended same way back to Vršič. Gaiters, crampons, poles, ice axe, warm clothes, hot tea and something sweet. And yes, Christmas was white this year smile

Hello!
In the early morning we park at Vršič. Group of six mountaineers headed first to a course on safe movement in winter conditions. Towards Vratca nicely on the track of predecessors. At the top of the pass turn left into gully where under Penzionist guidance we prepare for the mentioned course. First theoretical instructions, then practical test with all winter equipment - self-arrest with ice axe on steep slope. Of course the slope led nicely into gully. After a few hours of practical work, we decide also for a tour to Slemenova Špica. Some time still on predecessors' track. Then the track ends in pathless terrain. Together we decide to advance. Leader - Penzionist steps to the front and breaks track in soft snow for us. Thus slowly we overcome occasional covered dwarf pines and follow summer path. Breaking through dwarf pines is not easy, especially for column leader. When we arrive at Sleme the effort is rewarded with beautiful views. Just some gentle ascent and we are at the goal. Here we refuel, feed the flock of kavkas, photograph all around, peek into Tamar and prepare for descent. Descent in direction of approach. Snow throughout powder sinking up to 20 cm and even knee-deep. On slopes here and there slab but no avalanche danger. Below Vratca demonstration of snowpack stability test. Then at Vršič also demonstration of operation and experience with avalanche transceiver "buried in avalanche". Thus we conclude day full of new knowledge.

Just a question. Was this a PD Matica course for less demanding winter hikes? What's the approx. content?

There were many of those guiding winter courses at Vršič today, at least 4 groups.

Some PDs organize various courses mainly for their members. Couldn't take large groups anyway. Sodick, ask first at your own PD, or join larger ones.

Interesting, Vršič packed with cars, huge crowd, but all head only to Mojstrovke. So we had this peak to ourselves velik nasmeh

Current conditions: path trampled, snow dry, crampons rested in backpacks.

Has anyone been to Slemeno Spica from Vršič in the last few days?
What are the snow conditions above Vršič, how much new snow, avalanche danger?

Today we went to Slemeno Spica. The path from Vršič to the saddle is partly bare, need to cross only some small avalanche remains. From the saddle onwards a real winter fairytale. No track made, only snowshoe traces visible. We took our own way, snow was excellent for walking in the morning, frozen, not sinking. On the return high temperatures did their job. We sank to our thighs several times. The peak itself is practically bare. Our assessment is that winter gear is not needed.

Some pics taken Saturday afternoon at Slemeno Spica. From Vršič over the saddle, from there on as legenda wrote real winter idyll. Worth a visit.

Hi,

On 19.5. we were at Slemeno Spica. Some snow from the gate on the right when the path descends. Also some when crossing the north side of the slope. We returned via snowfield under Mojstrovke on trodden path.
