Snakes in Slovenia

Print
capraibex16. 07. 2012 17:07:14
This year there are definitely more, encounter with a viper on Soriška planina in April, below Dobrča summit a couple of days ago. Basically you have to walk with awareness that we run into snakes almost everywhere.

Yeah, is that anything strange? It's known they inhabit this area.....zavijanje z očmi

Not strange, nice to see it or even photograph it.

My goodness, you've "cheered me up". eek

Anyway, for my consolation, all the paths you list I've already hiked, some even multiple times, including Dolgo njivo, Lepo Komno or so, in all 20 years of hiking in the hills (20 to 30 tours per year) I haven't managed to see one yet. Or maybe I simply don't want to. coolThey were fleeing on the path to Škrlatica, Begunjščica, at Zelenica, on the path to Črna prst..., I just don't look, only get acceleration for breaking records.

Looks like the weekend will be bad, so again I won't be able to check in person if there's anything to the rumors about increased snake numbers.

Let's go bravely forward, whatever will be, will be.

Best, Saša

Hm... I've been around a lot this year but haven't noticed increased snake numbers (although logically they should increase). Actually the only snake I've seen this year was in the garden behind the house.

But this year I've already run into small beasts at least 15x (marten, weasels), which didn't seem so common before.

Also in my opinion the snake number hasn't increased this year... At least not yet... Young ones they have as far as I know in autumn anyway...

Those paths that I have most often on the list, starting point is Ljubelj pass, are really "rich" with snakes this year. Sure I meet one every year, but that on every tour I meet at least one I don't remember.

Fear of snakes is exaggerated, fear of course due to lack of knowledge. Need to look a bit in literature, we Slovenes have a good book on our snakes. Everyone who goes to the mountains should at least passively know our snakes. Especially at first, our venomous ones adder and nose-horned viper have very short tail and triangular head and vertical pupils. On the back many look similar, especially when eyes are frightened. Best "weapon" against snakes is only knowledge of their life and habitat. I live without problem among them at my weekend house, where nose-horned vipers, grass snakes, smooth snakes and dice snakes prevail. Haven't seen an adder sadly, the nose-horned viper drove it higher.
If interested, check them out, you'll also get to know some other reptiles on this album:

In mountains especially eyes on stalks and wash ears before tour, so you'll hear them before seeing....

Well, I saw one, on the path through Kačji graben (strange, huh, the name already says they live there). eek
Since I was walking second, I "managed" to see only about 20 cm of marbled rear end, which didn't resemble a tail, but had uniform thickness throughout. But I had to step exactly on that ledge under which this fragment hid.

It all ended well, the snake intact, me too, despite the acceleration over the snake ledge and a few more meters down through that knee-grinder of Kačji graben.

Rak: but to have them at home, no, "no way brother", even if it's such a useful animal.

Oh, something else: just below the Špik summit, such a fat mouse crossed my path that I seriously wonder if it was really a mouse or some other critter. nasmeh

Stay well, Saša

Rak, I'm interested where that weekend house stands. I'm even more interested how you learn to live with these reptiles. Don't know, it just carries me away when I meet a snake, and then I look around for three hours to see if it didn't follow me. But you just carry on like that, at the weekend housezadrega

@sjevnika, I don't breed them, they just live there in the area and we have to share the space with them. Well, same goes for their habitat in the mountains. In the past I did have to take some measures to reduce their numbers, because due to several years of abandonment there were really too many.

@samoa - my weekend house is in wine-growing area near Sromlje, the spot where nose-horned vipers hang in rock holes is a bit below it. Essential for safety is to hear or spot it in time, through observation you soon learn their habitat and habits too.

Thanks for the reply also regarding the location of your weekend house. Had to check on the "Google" map where these Sromlje are. Near Krško, if I figured right.

I believe you don't breed them, but somehow I can't imagine ever living in some coexistence with them. All congratulations for your perception of these animals.

Best, Saša
