Snakes in Slovenia

urbancek21. 05. 2012 15:48:45
Forums become annoying when individuals spread disinformation, like in this case from your side... Once again, you won't find nose-horned viper at 2000m, unless someone drags it up there or something similar...mežikanje I get upset only when I see that someone actually has no clue about snakes and "teaches" others, but on the other hand isn't sure if they meant adder or nose-horned viper... Oh dearzavijanje z očmi

P.S: English Wikipedia does say it's found above 2000m, but only at lower latitudes, so theoretically near the equator... But not in Slovenia for sure. zavijanje z očmizavijanje z očmizavijanje z očmi

urbancek, can you cite some reliable source that says nose-horned viper absolutely cannot be found at 2000m in Slovenia? I won't claim it usually stays up there, but IUCN says its habitat up to 2500m. If you have anything reliable that can convince me (us) otherwise, I'll gladly read it.

Have a nice day mežikanje

I just wrote it, but now you can't even read anymore or what?nasmeh
"At lower latitudes", so in "warmer" places it can surely be present around 2000m, but personally I think only exceptionallyzavijanje z očmi

I think even folk wisdom says that the nose-horned viper, because of its stronger venom, drove the adder to higher places (higher altitude etc.)!

Anyway, don't fight, have fun! jezik

I studied a bit and found out where my wrong description of nose-horned viper at the beginning came from. Once I read about the Laš adder, which has a similarly curved snout like the nose-horned viper. So the picture of the snout stuck in my head, but the species name disappeared. Well, the Laš adder is characteristic for living at high altitudes. But what I'm sure of is that I saw a nose-horned viper when I went to Tolminski Kuk. That it was nose-horned viper I'm sure, because I bent down to pick something up and there it was, we looked eye to eye, nose to nose nasmeh It was at least half an hour walk from Planina na Kalu whose elev. =1490m. So at least at 1700m I met it. The landscape at 1700m in those parts didn't differ much from that at 2000m, so I don't know why it's so impossible for it to climb there. I admit that in the north of Julijci we won't find it at that height. But for the southern slopes of Kanin, Krn and Tolmin hills I think you can't claim it's surely not there at 2000m.

Anyway I admit my first info was wrong. The only hill left in my life is Calvary. There they'll crucify me for spreading disinformation and spouting nonsense.

CarpeDiem247: That it drove it out is partly true, but that nose-horned viper has stronger venom no. Adder has stronger venom by toxicity, just injects less than nose-horned viper, so the effect is similar or even nose-horned viper wins in the end if we sum up "more venomous". I already wrote about this in this thread, if anyone read..zavijanje z očmi

Cheers!

urbanček, no need to get angry, I just mentioned that you can meet nose-horned viper also in the higher part. Definitely not at height 2000 or 3000 as some predecessors mentioned on this forumnasmeh

I've already read quite a bit about venomous snakes here on the forum, including that approx. every fourth bite ends with the best possible outcome, without injected venom! nasmeh

carpediem, Bosnian viper is a subspecies of common viper, with us it's very rare, more common on territory south of us, maybe that's why the name. jezikI think, not sure though, it's a viper that's completely black.

carpe diem and others as far as I know, but don't hold me 100% to my word please, venomous snakes that live here are not deadly to an adult human, except if the bitten person has certain heart problems or is a chronic patient. Complications can occur also in younger persons (children). Chance of dying e.g. from tick (tick meningitis) is higher than from snakeeek

Hey, does anyone of you know the BLACK VIPER? Or rather I'd say, it would be great if everyone knew him!

@urbanček, I see you've got a PhD in bullshitology and it's hard to tell you anything. I photographed it at about 2050m. Take a walk to Jerebica or Rombon and you'll see it tooeek

Since you're obviously cats for snakes, you'll know something to say!

A few years ago I was bathing in Krka river (Žužemberk) and I saw under water (actually on the bottom on stones) a snake. Then I got very scared and didn't study it too closely. I assume it was grass snake, or could it be some other? I've seen them swim (e.g. in Podpeško lake), holds head really high up to see ahead and swims nicely, hehe.

So which snake could it be in Krka river in my case? nasmeh

carpediem, yeah it's possible you saw a smooth snake. It has yellowish-white spots on the head. It's not venomous, but if it bites you it's still better to go to the doctor to get a tetanus shotvelik nasmeh
