To the mountains with a dog?!

Dear Nataša! I agree with you. This is a forum about mountains. But you are also pouring oil on the fire by sending people to a psychiatrist. Think about it too, thanks.

Nataša, surely it helped you too to share these tips with us. I don't know what's so terrible if someone doesn't like dogs, maybe fears them, it grates on their liver listening to hours of dog barking, retreats on narrow mountain paths from exhausted dogs, jumps over dog poops in the city. Read carefully next time, Owners, not dogs, they need school. Lesson how to handle a dog. Why cancel this debate. Dog owners backed down, tail between legs as we read. Others you make fools of, impatient, primitives. Keep your pets, who stops you. But don't force them and don't disturb other people.

This debate belongs here, we just stepped on the tail of you dog lovers. Here your dog doesn't jump to help. Outside it bares teeth at us, barks and jumps at us. There you feel strong and safe. Here when problems are written, just delete from portal. Pity when your pet isn't around. Now we at least know what all you use them for.

At Kamniško sedlo a dog stole my sandwich. I take it out of the backpack, then it comes by and hop. Owner says that's never happened before. That he doesn't do that. But he held it in his muzzle. Let him eat it, I said. And he did, with gusto. Owner said not a word, no thanks no sorry. Who's guilty here? Hungry dog, uncultured owner? Or me? For being there at all with a sandwich? Please answer, a dog owner. Many thanks. Greetings Silvo

Something similar happened to us on Golica. Only the dog owner was probably blind and deaf, maybe French because he took off nicely and pretended the dog wasn't his. When we met the dog and non-dog-owner again at Planina pod Golico, they went in the same car. Sonja

I'm really scared of dogs. A dog bit my hand years ago on Krvavec. I've tried to get rid of this fear in many ways. No success. I know dog isn't much to blame, owner should control the dog. Wasn't even on leash. Really don't understand why everyone says. He won't do anything bad. No need to fear him. Who's threatened here, who's intolerant, please.

Yes, tail between legs, that's what they've learned. Love is like that.

At the beginning of July we went through Žrelo to Storžič. In front of us there was a gentleman with his dog, who wasn't on a leash. He walked off the path, kicking stones that flew at us and luckily also past us. We asked him if he could put him on a leash. He wouldn't listen either. So we overtook him. He comes behind us to the top, stands for a couple of minutes, just enough to drink a beer from his backpack and goes towards Kališče. Not a drop of water for the dog. I like dogs so I think this behavior is animal torture.

Oh ... Purely by chance I stumbled upon this forum because I love hiking in the mountains, but today when I was interested in the weather for the next days I also came across this page. I enthusiastically read the comments of all enthusiasts and came across this too. My opinion is that the dog should be on a leash anyway, even if trained, as the rules require and after all it's considerate to others, since it's not nice if the dog is called loudly and thus prevents seeing some animal and disturbs the mountain peace. But I'm horrified by some comments here that are really rude! I adore animals and have a little dog myself, and at the same time I know etiquette and at least basic manners. Tijana was asking for advice and opinion, not for more rude criticism! To me personally, those who insult here seem like people with strange principles and I imagine you as obviously more grumpy hikers. Tijana, I completely understand you. Puppies are happy when off-leash, but it's true that in the mountains they disturb others, which is understandable. If you didn't know that, I believe it put you in a bad mood. For the future: lots of enjoyment with your pup in the mountains, just keep her leashed. Zala p.s.: here I was talking only about comments on Tijana's question, other experiences of others here are irrelevant.

I see that the best is to establish a club of dog haters so you can have picnics and complain and cry on each other's shoulders about how dogs are the most horrible creatures and they should be exterminated. Is that what you want? I'm really curious if you also explain to your children how dogs are horrible, evil, bite and have fleas. No wonder the youth is all "crazy" when parents brainwash them with their problems. Think a bit about those who can't have children or lose their loved ones, and the blind and disabled. Who will be more loyal by their side and protect them than a dog. People rather go their own way, the animal stays. Anyway, it's pointless to explain anything, some are just "thick heads", those non-dog owners, no mistake. Best, Nataša

Oh, and one more thing: if you let your pup off, better watch that there aren't many people around. If there are more, they always get upset. Personally I let my pup off when I go to some lower hill where we just go for a walk. Anyway she's small and not for high mountains, but if you want to give her some joy, I suggest letting her off occasionally so she doesn't disturb others. No point in arguing. Rules are rules. And many probably meddle in others while breaking many - probably even more important - rules themselves every day. That's how it is. It's obvious you care and that's important. How some owners ignore hikers' complaints (stolen sandwich etc.) is another story. best Zala

Oh, when I talked about etiquette and basic manners, I meant those who insult here and not Tijana, so no mistake Have a nice time, be happy in the mountains and rather take care of yourselves than sour other people's nice feelings! Best Zala

I hope your dog replaces not only the child but also the husband, family and friends for you. Be happy and content, even though your dog disturbs and endangers others. As long as your dog flies, doesn't care about other animals. Let alone people. Egoism. Ignorance, sneakiness, pretending the dog isn't yours when something happens. These are traits of many dog owners. Big poop on the way to Šmarna gora. Lots by the path. Beautiful. Why clean up, it's not at home. It's in nature, where we're just casual visitors. And yet we think everything is ours and do whatever we want.

Well, exactly about this insulting and provocation I wrote. Obviously some only read what suits them ... I think I was clear when I wrote that I'm not talking about other bad experiences but only that there's no need to yell at everyone right away if they ask something. And I think I wrote that I agree the dog should be leashed. But now I'm just laughing because I went back to read this exactly because I thought there would be more criticism. Enjoy and I hope such debates don't occupy your life. And that you have something else to do. I clearly stated my position and have a clear conscience, the others ... I don't know how old you are but ... Insulting is not a way of life. Obviously for many it is. I'm 23 years old and ... you're a bit ridiculous to me. I found my next trip, hope many others do too, the rest lots of fun insulting dog owners!

I've given up, tail between legs so you'll be happy. I advise you, if you don't like dogs or they really disturb you so much in the mountains and elsewhere, then stay home - there'll be the least damage and spend whole days anonymously writing in forums what all you hate, what bothers you, what should be banned and "bitch" about the whole world if you like. Maybe some wish will come true... Best, Nataša

Culture on a dog level. Obviously you're hanging here too. We'll go to the mountains anyway, some with friends, others with dogs. Clean up some poop, who gets a whack even at snack time, who will bite when scared, but in the end we'll be satisfied. With everything. Some only with dogs. If you were somehow smart and cultured, as you pretend on this forum, you'd at least respect that dogs are on a leash. BASIC. Not to mention other things. Lots of joy and watch that some hiker doesn't bite your dog. We are really terrible.

Tijana, it's true there are rules in TNP but where there are no people and no one drinks water from the little lake I let my dog swim, and because of me you can all stand on your heads and "spit" at me now. But you can soak your dirty and smelly feet in it? In the mountains I also don't pick up poop after my dog, so what? Do you pick up after yourselves if you need to go big and run behind a bush? Does a roe deer pick up after itself when it poops? Does a chamois know how to read TNP rules and not swim in the lake if it feels like it? Come on don't be like that and don't bother us who have dogs, just as we leave you in peace so give us peace too. You're not alone in the mountains. That's how we have to behave, we with dogs and you too even if you don't have dogs. We just live in an environment where dogs, people, birds, rodents, reptiles live together...

I think that many dog owners are actually their tormentors and not us who don't have them. A dog is not a human. Many forget that and happily bring the pup into our apartment. Four walls are suitable only for people, not for a dog. Of course the pup is happy when it finally goes for a walk, the rest of the time owners torture it locked in the apartment. Owners - interestingly how you call yourselves - have only fashion trend in mind. If the president has one, then I will too... one way living

Ouch ... That's what we're talking about - we take the dog for a walk and into nature and even there everything is wrong. What then - should no one buy a dog anymore? Just for info - I found my dog in the snow with inflamed ears. Yeah, sure I have him for 9 years now because it's a fashion trend ... Bravo ... And that last comment wouldn't bother me if it weren't for those "owners" in between ... What am I then? Any idea? Tormentor? Okay, next time I'll leave him in the snow to freeze. I mean - helloooo? A dog can't survive in nature alone!!! Because it doesn't hunt and doesn't forage! And that's why many take their dog to the mountains, because they love it and have it so it's with them and by their side! Where did this thread go, I can't believe it. But no one will tell me I'm a tormentor! And even though it's "many", that last remark that "owners" have fashion trend in mind is total absurdity! If the last guest thinks that MANY torture their dog, then find a concrete example and solve it properly. Horror ...
