To Triglav?

mariusz1984_katowice17. 11. 2015 13:42:34
Dear Friends,

I would like to visit Julian Alps at the end of this week - it's maybe not the best season for hiking in medium-high mountains, however I was unable to go on a vacation till the mid of November,

Please can you let me know if it is possible to do some hiking in "winter" conditions on via-ferrata routes - like Tomniskowa Pot ?

What about Jalovec ?

Exactly I would like to know if the routes are secured over its entire length? Is there a steel line on the entire length or anchors?

From the weather archive, camera on Triglavski ledenik - it seems that now the conditions are good - unfortunately all weather forecasts say that heavy snowing is possible on Saturday and Sunday.

In case of snowfalls (and in the next days) - is it necessary to use rope or the installed facilities - steel line, anchors give enough protection?

I have only a little experience in winter conditions in rocky mountains (2000-3000m), some experience in climbing - but not in mountains,

Is this acceptable to go there alone? - or would you recommend me to go with someone else, and use additional equipment (line) / wait until the weather conditions are better (probably till next year).

Kind regards,
Mariusz

Hello!

Since you are as you say inexperienced in walking in winter conditions, I would strongly advise you not to visit any mountains in winter conditions. There is still snow there, and you should never ever go hiking in those conditions without the proper equipment (ice axe, crampons, climbing rope and a helmet) and experience. If you don't have the equipment and experience I would advise you to wait for better weather conditions. Definitely don't go alone. If you don't have the experience you should hire a guide. Better safe than sorry! mežikanje

Good luck and be safe!

I would not advise you to go to Triglav in such conditions with your experience, but if you really want some winter you could try easier 2000ers, such as Stol or Košuta peaks, or in Julian Alps Debela Peč, Bogatin etc.
But you should not go there alone, hire a guide or take someone experienced with you and dont forget about proper equipment. Wait at least 3 days after the snowfall!
Good luck/srečno/powodzenia!

Hi Tina,

Yes, I am inexperienced ... but please chill out - inexperienced for me means 1) I didn't walk any ridge routes in winter condition - only two or three via-face "tourist" routes in rocky mountains (I expect Julian Alps via-ferratas are even more demanding than ridge routes), 2) I know the avalanche levels ... but knowing levels is only a theory (plus very little of practice) - hiking securely in winter conditions is much more complex.

I know how to use crampons, ice axe, I have helmet ... maybe even two ... including motorcycle one nasmeh,

winter conditions and "winter" conditions are two different things for me - in winter conditions there is a possibility of avalanche (after snowfalls planned for Saturday there might be avalanche level 1). On the other hand in "winter" conditions there is a high possibility of slipping - which might be very dangerous on via-ferratas - this is what I asked (if via-ferratas are secured on the entire length).

I have walked alone the whole Tatra mountains (Poland and Slovakia) - without any problem / accident - hiking alone is completely OK ... in summer conditions on tourist (I don't know - but I expect also, including via-ferrata's) routes. The situation is strictly different in "winter" conditions - when a simple mistake can cause you to slip and accident.

Dear Kolar, thank you for proposals which targets are OK for the next two weeks,

It's a good idea to wait at least 3 days - because there will be sun and freeze - so the snow starts cementing.

I think I will rather stay home - I wanted to go by motorbike - and it is nothing pleasant to ride/hike when the temperature is -10 (C) and there are snowfalls, heavy rainfalls. Moreover - it is not very safe to visit mountains alone - in such conditions.

Not yet 100% sure - but I think I will postpone the plan of hiking Triglav, Jalovec and other Julian Alps peaks - however, they are still in my mind - maybe for 6-7 years, from the first time I
heard about them ... just like the "falling in love at the first sight" nasmeh

Thank you/hvala/dziekuje !! nasmeh

Ločanka and primoza, they aroused my curiosity and I went to check. I hope I didn't write anything wrong, if so, corrections will be gladly accepted.

mariusz1984_katowice,

Tominškova is not via ferrata route. It is steep route with some exposed parts. Those parts are well secured. Over its entire length, only small part is exposed and therefore there is mostly no need for technical protection. Just so you will not be disappointed.

However, in winter conditions it is not recommended.

The amount of precipitation will probably be low, but Tominškova face north, so the snow might last until next season. In that case pick some other route.

I do not want to judge you or assess your capabilities, use your own judgment, but in winter conditions, ascent from Krma is nothing special. It is quite popular, you certainly won't be alone. If you get lucky, you might even make it to the top.

I would recommend you to postpone your visit, this weekend will not be best for mountaineering much over 2000m. Sunday may be OK, but as mentioned before, pick something easy, like Debela Peč from Pokljuka. It's still beautiful and just over 2000m. Take ice axe and crampons.

If you would like to visit Julian Alps, follow the forum, you might find some company for winter ascent.

Good luck,

Rok

Dear Rokson,

Thank you for detailed information - especially about the Tominskova Pot, the nature of facilities and how the route is covered with them.

Currently I decided it doesn't make much sense to have a quite long trip (800km / 10 hours) and stay there all the time in city - not in mountains. I thought it is better to wait some time and observe the weather conditions (cameras, photos/reports here at hribi.net) after the planned snowfalls.

However I am not sure about my decision - the weather conditions now are very good - so it was a good chance to visit at least Triglav and Mangart. Maybe it was a better idea to go and have a plan in case of bad weather.

I have a kind request to all tourists visiting Triglavski Narodni Park in the next few days. If you have some photos of snow conditions on medium-difficult routes (like Tominskova or around Jalovec, Prisojnik, via-ferratas) and can share (by uploading, orit - I would really appreciate it.

Once again for helpful advice.

Yesterday afternoon via Plemenice to the top, then to Kredarica and descent via Tominsko back to Vrata. Caught a nice sunset on top, but at the end of the descent there was no end in sight.

I see some walking with crampons on dry rocks and wonder if the teeth get damaged in that case? Probably not very beneficial...

Search the net a bit and you'll see it's useful to walk with them or change shoes every meter

SamoK, what's your faking problem? Where the hell should I ask if not here up? You're all the cream of mountaineering here madonna.

Redbull thanks, I found: "crampons are intended mainly for walking on snow and ice and short
intermediate rocky sections – walking with them on loaded scree and other terrain is very awkward and dangerous for a sprain".
So material obviously not such a problem.

On the net you can find a lot already, but practice is different, hence the question how it is in practice. Unfortunately in the eyes of some you're a criminal right away if you dare ask something. Jesus.

Oh forget it... sorry I commented at all.

You only take off crampons for a few minutes' walk on rocks if you prefer a broken "ass" over chipped teeth. You just file them occasionally with a file and it's fine

@carniolus, I see you've found the answer.

Well, on rocks the teeth do wear down, but that's not such a problem, they can be sharpened back (aluminum ones are more sensitive). Worse is that walking on rock is quite awkward. A tooth can get stuck in some crack and "pull your foot back" when you want to step forward, result: loss of balance and possibly a deep fall. And on smooth rock crampons don't grip like a rubber sole at all, so higher chance of slip.
Of course in conditions alternating ice/snow and bare rock we walk constantly with crampons, just more care needed. Putting crampons on and off every 20m... somehow not sensiblenasmeh

Otherwise yes, for experienced mountaineer the answer to this question is quite logical and obvious... like for pharmacist it's totally logical and obvious why we shouldn't drink alcohol with Lekadol (correct answer NOT "horrible question" or "because it is")

A bit joking, a bit serious: Carniolus (and others), it's full moon. And summarized from lunin.net it's like this:

Sun and Moon stand opposite each other and show each other their true face. That's why we feel emotions strongly and react quickly to every challenge from the environment. There's more energy in the atmosphere again (a few days before the opposition tension rules, severe traffic accidents are frequent, people are irritable and sadly it's also the period when we can expect more violence, murders etc. Woman who has her monthly period at full moon bleeds stronger, more (also premature) births.

Go out, among people, but avoid important talks - this isn't a suitable period for opposition.

Good luck.

@SamoK: no, I'm answering. And there aren't so few who ask. And imagine some person who, on a medical forum, asks for answers about some drug gets the response "horrible question".
