Toll booths on Vršič and in Vrata

As a curiosity about the traffic regime, it's nicely described in the left column contribution how on 16.11. they wanted to go to bivouac 2. Ramp closed due to winter conditions unless you have a permit. If you have that then snow or ice can't stop you

About Vrata a lot has been said recently in a separate thread, here are some news about Vršič. The road will be dug up to the "ruker" on June 15 and then again in autumn when the barriers will also be lowered. Already at entry you'll need to know if you're transit or hikers/tourists and go to the right barrier, the latter won't open at all if parking lots are full. God knows how it will be in practice if tourists start abusing and "mistaking" or if some transit guy really changes mind on the way... I'm curious if there will be traffic sensors and extend permitted time for transit in case of jam, works or other obstacles. More here: Correction: N1 deleted the news for unknown reasons, but it's exactly the same on Siol: https://siol.net/novice/slovenija/po-zapornicah-v-dolino-vrata-letos-se-zapornice-za-vrsic-660597

I still have the chance to say that those who came up with all the barriers can shove them somewhere!

Felix. They used to say- "When did the corpse fart?" Sorry to tender ears, but all the truth is in this old tradition.

To share my fresh impressions from Vršič. During vacation in Kr. Gora we avoid it as much as possible due to crowds. But yesterday we finally drove over the pass to see what's new. Nothing except barriers, even fewer spots for P. The road is still in a desperate state, parking lots unregulated (except that one at Erjavčev dom), cars everywhere, at the top rocks limiting parking in places. We just wanted to stop and look around a bit, walk as tourists - impossible, all parked up (mid-morning weekday), so we drove to the Primorska side. At least the road is OK here. We preferred to stop instead in Log po Mangrtom at the big P at the end of the village (free, plenty of free spots) and walked along Loška Koritnica. Bliss ... I'm afraid Vršič won't see us anymore, especially since abroad we are discovering really arranged free mountain roads and P at these starting points, even passes. If something is paid somewhere, for that money you get concrete arranged infrastructure (not a fig in the pocket like at Blato e.g.) I wonder where the money from toll/parking expected at Vršič will go. New road, arranged parking, regular free transport??? So if you want to park up there (even as tourists), be really early! Weekend is total chaos.

So, if I go from Vršič on some longer tour, parking will cost me 40 eur. Thanks, Slovenia, my country, and special thanks to PZS, which takes such good care of hikers!

Sincerely, I hope this is just the first incomplete info and daily ticket price info is missing. Which won't be cheap either, I fear. Otherwise, adios sanity.

This two lanes thing is really top ingenuity. Does anyone know elsewhere or are we first in the world again? No wonder drivers are confused in trial period. They will soon abolish it when there are queues in Kranjska Gora. Wouldn't it be simpler just to put a traffic light with available parking at Vršič? If free, you park, if not, you drive on. They will need parking control anyway, despite two lanes. That parking price at Vršič will be high, I didn't doubt that at all. Of course it will be higher than comparable parking abroad. Other prices are rising too. Looks like ordinary hill folk with low incomes will have to hike from the valley, like in the past. Everything returns if people don't decide right.

I agree, Drago. The system is totally stupid - meaning if it's full up top you won't be able to get a ticket, in 15 minutes drive up a few spots will free up but you won't be allowed to park because you won't have a ticket or what? People already can't drive through "turbo roundabouts", so here it'll be even worse chaos... Anyway, I give them a year or two until everything "ornk" inside barriers is payable - then it can be just one lane again We sold nature! The worst is that with all these ramps and whatever you still have to pay parking fees so as a visitor you have "zero" options to treat yourself to a free nature walk, which should be our common good. How did Bohinci write it somewhere.. Day tourists anyway just bring trash...

I admit these barriers don't bother me much, since I've been avoiding Vršič a lot already, because I don't like crowds and chaos. Even when going to Bovec, I went via Predel, it's a really comfortable road, definitely better than the hairpin turns over Vršič. Plus there are so many other (free) starting points where there's no crowd and you have peace the whole day If I understand correctly, you'll still be able to go through normally as transit, then leave the car e.g. at Koča na Gozdu or at Mihov dom, where no payment is needed, especially if you drink and eat something there after the tour. At Erjavčeva koča you have to pay, right? Actually only the top parking will be paid, elsewhere it stays the same as now. The expensive parking is to prevent long-term parking, tourists will park for an hour or two, consequently more cars will turn at Vršič, and yes, as Drago says, hikes to surrounding mountains will be from lower starting points (that's the trend everywhere - if you pay, starting point is closer, if not, you walk farther to it, consequently the tour is longer). And don't think I support expensive parking, far from it. But I don't worry, because I haven't been there for a long time and won't be.

Of course, since you don't climb or ski, it doesn't bother you. Those of us who do, these barriers bother us a lot.

I agree with Daaam, can't make a stupider system and soon everything will be paid and they can close all 5 huts soon. And we know it's all because of €nature

I hike to hills/mountains, also ski touring, but true, to a much smaller extent than 10 years ago Regarding ski touring from Vršič don't worry, barriers will be down only in summer season, rest of time up and you can drive higher if road is cleared. If not, start from 2nd hairpin and hop on skis, I've done it a few times and survived

Yes, the Anti-Mountaineering Association of Slovenia really takes good care of us: "Vice President of the Alpine Association of Slovenia Martin Šolar rated the regime as now planned good. But he warned that in future too it will be necessary to ensure stopping and parking at alpine huts or starting points for ascents below the pass. No parking along the road and ditches. A good part of the road below the pass summit should be fenced on both sides, preventing roadside parking. But consistent control lower on the road will be needed, as people will likely seek parking options there too, Šolar thought." https://www.rtvslo.si/lokalne-novice/gorenjska/na-vrsic-od-ponedeljka-skozi-dve-zapornici/760063
