Nothing to add to the above report from yesterday. The stop at Vrtaški vrh was exciting. A mighty specimen of a nearly extinct species elegantly glided from Jerebikovec and went off behind Kukova špica.

.... Vrtaška planina... In the last third of the path snow patches start. Towards the planina there is still lots, snow is southern and sinking. Further to Vrt. vrh there are snowshoe tracks. Real pleasure is this planina, although the steepness is quite tough.

Yesterday 16.3.2017 to check how far snow still there and holds. From Mojstrana over Vrtaška planina to where trodden, further always deeper steps. Snow starts at cableway (some ice on last switchbacks). Given temperatures and sunny exposure even 5:00 start too late. At 8:30 above Farjevi to knees, under Njivce barely held on surface. In scrub occasionally but rarely to butt, to ridge again to ankles without extra gear. All deepens on return a bit after 10:00 (ankle=knees...). Under Njivce meet hiker from Peričnik. With snowshoes check PP. According to story snow there too from woods to Vrtaška. Easier to extract from their tracks when you had somewhere to lean thumbs.

Today on Vrta Ridge from Mojstrana via Vrtaška planina and Njivice. Conditions almost summer-like, views wonderful. Compacted snow cover starts at the end of Njivice. Today the snow was soft, but it didn't sink much. Didn't need winter gear, but gaiters are necessary because the snow sinks to the knees in places.

Right after the PP from Njivice turns into the slope above Vrata, there is the logbook in PP style. That means only those who know exactly where it is will find it. The first clearer turn-off descends towards Peričnik. When the trail crosses the first larger scree, there is a very indistinct turn-off that goes directly into Tilešov rovt. The third is the turn-off for Poldov rovt. After Poldov rovt, the PP descends to the bed of Rdeči potok, crosses it, and descends to the road at Turkov rovt. If you don't know the trail well, you easily stray. But it's one of the nicest hunters' paths in my opinion. Especially the passage under Tičarica is phenomenal. Yesterday, 5.12., for St. Nicholas  Walked to the planina past occasional avalanche areas from steep grass (rocks already bare). Further through deep knee-deep powder that towards the summit gets a crust (which doesn't hold yet). Yay

To Vrtaška planina without issues, path dry. Snow starts soon above planina and on Njivice we measure it already in meters. In the morning it sank just enough that crampons were not needed.
