Where to go with a dog?

Print
GregorC19. 10. 2011 17:25:53
MajaO, identical case a colleague had about 10 years ago, when his dog walked more and more heavily; in the end, he couldn't move his hind paws anymore. Vets despaired because they couldn't discover why and advised an injection, with which they had already come to terms. But they could not decide to take him to the vet. The dog slowly showed improvement and was soon OK. And he happily went hiking in the mountains for many years more nasmeh

MajaO: thanks for the explanation!

As far as I know, with shepherds and mastiffs that have big bodies and relatively weak legs, it can still be limited somehow by selection and excluding sick animals from breeding. But those short-muzzled dogs e.g. (typical example pug) are like that by breed standard. And those I'd ban. That's animal torture and I don't understand people who want a freak as a pet.

Don't know if you know, but supposedly one breed (I think French bulldog, not 100%) has the flaw that the male can't mount the female zmeden velik nasmeh and they have to inseminate artificially.

If until now we have talked only about longer and higher paths for dogs, let's also mention some for an afternoon walk after lunch or for those who are not exactly avid hikers. Besides the already famous and crowded (dog-crowded mežikanje ) Šmarna gora, also e.g.:

- Katarina
- Toško čelo
- Gobavica
- Sv. Primož above Kamnik
- Sv. Ana above Podpeč
- Čemšeniška planina
- Celjska koča (actually already 'Celje hotel' since that abomination stands there instead of original hut).

If someone has more ideas, let them share.

I'll get one like that, we'll be just right for fast walking.

Today with my Rina to Ratitovec. She wasn't the only four-legged one, behaved well, others too.
Only thing that bothered me (yes, me nasmeh ) - we were already going down, pup on leash behind me and by my right leg so as not to bother the uphill walkers, when dad from afar says to son - oh, careful, this one is big and mean, leave it alone. OK, right to leave it alone, but that was wrong from many viewpoints - teaching a harmful attitude towards dogs, educationally questionable... bah.
But didn't spoil the day for me - sun over sea of fog - priceless!

I'll really say it, wrote this with greatest joy nasmeh
Maja's dogs, actually bitch and pup, are such "sweeties" mežikanje that they went straight "into my heart". Mischiefs they can do, can't describe with words. But once you see it nasmehmežikanje
Pure joy the whole day nasmeh
What day, it was so great that we continued well into the night . . .

@ninaub I saw you at the hut. nasmeh

I think it's right that parents teach kids how to behave around dogs, but it bothers me too that some breeds are presented as mean. It's right that a child doesn't impose on dogs but not by making it scared but with respect.

Today my husband and I were on Ratitovec. Wonderful, sunny day. On the way up, down and also on the top I saw so many dogs as I haven't for a long time. Not one did I hear bark. They were all breeds, big and small. They were mostly all on leashes, you could see they were well brought up. Owners were mostly young people and it was really nice to watch how the doggies obey them. It looks like Ratitovec is quite a suitable tour for dogs. Have fun in these wonderfully sunny days.

Also my best friend of dachshund breed is a real mountaineer. Today we enjoyed on Planina Korošica, back via lojtri to Stari Ljubelj.

I dress our Luna at temperatures of -3, -5; she is a Dalmatian and without undercoat, otherwise during walking there is basically no problemnasmeh

Yesterday on ŠG one night eek; I give her a collar with lights so someone doesn't get scared of her and I see her myselfnasmeh

MajaO: then you say that you had a good time with turbo.

Isn't it interesting how some in 'real life' are completely different people than on the net. I've noticed that many times

Maja, just one friendly advice: be a bit careful with unleashed dogs in Austria. There the hunter has the right to shoot a free-running dog. Check this:

http://www.abschaffung-der-jagd.at/mordbilder.htm

This is an anti-hunting Austrian organization.

Check the third link from the bottom. Poor dog! mrk pogled But the owner is responsible. From the article you gather (if you know German) that he shot it completely legally.

And poor that pig (second link from the bottom). mrk pogled eek

I wouldn't want to raise some polemics again but I'd partly give right to that anti-hunting organization.

Those on your link MajaO even boast with those carcasses. Ok, hunting for food still, but not for trophies and bragging.

On one side they shoot unleashed dogs, which one would say is ok, protect animals from them but on the other side they mistreat them with those same dogs themselves.

Biggest bullshit is that hunters care for nature and animals,... and bla bla! Nature cares for them itself, man should just not interfere!

Any idea for an undemanding mini hike to a hill(ock) for a pensioner slightly deaf and slightly blind dog grandpa? Ideally around Vrhnika or Lj barje, Logatec, Polhograjsko, Škofjeloško. Best some secluded path/road, and without hut on top. Thanks in advance! nasmeh

Well, in the end these "old timers" show their condition too. I was really surprised by ours; we started from home towards Hlevišam, in between we changed our minds and went to check out Pšenk, but 12 km (plus probably some more meters, dog as dog) he marched completely without problems. It is true though that we don't take him on bigger slopes anymore. But then we have the whole day peace from his tricks, because he's so tired he only gets up for a walk to the bowl.

This one was still fit until recently, but a month ago he got some unpleasant issue and since then (yet?) he's not fit for longer hikes. He really loves going on outings and exploring though.

For starters, to get back in shape I suggest Jetrbeng from Katarina, a bit of macadam, benches in between for rest, if by chance the hind legs rest a bit when it gets a bit uphill, going won't hurt eithernasmeh Maybe also Katarina - Gonte (without Grmada)mežikanjeMore could be found

Nanook, ours was already good 4 years ago on the brink of going invalid, everything was so bad together. But when I look at him now and remember what a poor thing he was then, it's like it's not the same dog.
