***JusAvgustin said:*** "Or a šarplaninec..." Not sure if I read it on this forum or another hiking one. Anyway, someone told that he was on Šar Planina and those dogs guarding the herd there kept harassing and attacking him... Well, some shepherd told him to just pick up a stone and throw it at the dog and it will run away. Well, such a herd guardian...

Well, but then you have to carry a bag of stones with you, there aren't many stones on pastures, right? The situation already somewhat reminds of that famous Indian one - what did Winnetou do when he met a bear; he hid behind a big rock that he was carrying just for that purpose.

Here are some animals I encountered while wandering around Liguria!

Which part of Liguria did you visit?

I already wrote something in the posts "Bec Moler", "Sentiero degli Alpini" and "Pot Ameglia-Tellero" under Forum-Conditions-Italy-Apennines. First I stopped in Cuneo, then visited the trails from the first two descriptions, stopped for a day in Genoa (three days later six people died there in floods), then went to areas around La Spezia, which I mentioned in the "Pot Ameglia-Tellero" description. On the way home I made an unplanned stop in Modena (to which I drove in the morning from La Spezia, where it was raining cats and dogs - that's why Cinque Terre was canceled) then also a planned one in Venice.

When a deep cyclone appears in the Gulf of Genoa, then it really pours like from a bucket, can be several days at the same intensity. It washed us there several times so hard that I went to sleep right from the tent in the shelter of the car .

I like animals, all fine and good, but in this section where to go with dog it bothers me that you've now dragged in cats too, soon with snakes and I don't know what else you'll come up with. You're already exaggerating with dogs, this doesn't belong on this portal, Hribi.net

@rekar 11.11.2011 The website Hribi.net is becoming more and more lively and diverse. In the "general discussions" section, puppies and now cats are showing up too. Why would that be annoying? If you're not interested, you quickly return to the purely hiking pages. In the small ads today, among backpacks and crampons, flower pots appeared too. Really, the admin quickly "sold them out", but it was amusing. The guy saw "small ads" and added his flower pots, it didn't bother him at all that he was the only one with such goods.

@Irina Good thing nobody writes which bush they went to shit behind and which rock they peed on. I think there are other sections where dogs and cats belong.

@rekar - you probably don't have a dog and don't care where you walk? With a dog tours are a bit different, even though it's used to hiking in mountains and sadly the dog can't go everywhere. That's why I fully welcome the question, because years ago there was already a mountain accident case, even fatal, where a dog was involved too!

Lunatic and MajaO thanks for suggestions, we'll try. If not, he'll be carried a bit, he's not that heavy anyway. Loni, with ours something happens every five years apparently. At five (approx) castration, at ten borreliosis and ehrlichiosis, at fifteen vestibular syndrome. Wonder what at twenty. rekar, snakes already have a thread and imo they actually fit great on a hiking forum. Snakes in Slovenia

Nanook, at his twenties you'll be glad just that he's with you. Man, can't imagine how it'll be when ours is gone, since I brought that 6kg pup home in June 2000. And how he gulped the chocolate, real baby. His mom made almost 15, dad still moves around with almost 14. Prospects more than good now. We'll enjoy all moments given with our four-legged friends. True, I miss our wanderings, never had such ideal listener before or after

***viharnik said:*** When a deep cyclone appears in the Gulf of Genoa, then it really pours like from a bucket, even several days intensely Yeah, rain and flood risk was actually announced on radio only for Liguria and western Piedmont up to Turin. Shit they had on French side in Provence too. If it was still pouring in La Spezia in the morning, when I arrived mid-morning in Po Valley it completely stopped. Apennines seem a barrier preventing such cyclone from advancing quickly so those places cash it all in and get flooded so often. Happened in the past too just fewer victims maybe one or two and/or material damage.

@rekar: Why is cat mentioned here then? http://www.hribi.net/zivali.asp No dog at all! Looks really a bit weird on front page: Topic "Where to go with a dog?", next to it cat picture.

I have a question for MajaO. You hike a lot abroad with dogs, mountains of course, curious if there are notices along paths about dogs? Like here, when going to Zelenica above Ljubelj, already at path start notice: dogs must be leashed and muzzled in season and off-season. Not very pleasant feeling that dog would have to go uphill with muzzle...

You have such signs abroad too, but there they kind of understand it too. Of course you have exceptions there too. In Liguria on the doors of Rifugio Allavena it said entry for dogs forbidden and also a sign with crossed-out dog, inside there was a whole dog party in the evening. Italians, of course!

Oh, really bad luck that happened to you. Well I scratched myself a bit yesterday on the descent from Orlovo gnezdo (Veli Badin) on a rusty cable (I wrote about it in the report too) but since I'm vaccinated against tetanus there shouldn't be problems. But I'll call my doctor tomorrow anyway. Otherwise in Italy except the regions of Friuli and Veneto there shouldn't be rabies. Because Alps and Apennines are natural barriers and over the sea nothing can come So stray dogs in southern Italy shouldn't be dangerous in that regard.

Thanks, Maja, for this info. Good to know. VanSims, you don't call the doctor for every scratch, do you? Considering how many I've gotten since distant childhood, I'm surprised I'm still alive with this paranoia.
