Where to go with a dog?

MajaO, I believe you take good and responsible care of your dog. I don't know why you think this isn't a topic for forums. Maybe some owner of four-legged pets will ask something... before a police report is needed.
A few days ago I was cycling from the direction of Katarina towards Sora. Suddenly I spot a Rottweiler in front of me (5 m), without a leash, and at first I don't see the owner either (I spot him a bit later, he was a few meters ahead) - So in my panic I swerved left to the middle of the road, luckily no car was there then...
So much from the "handful" of irresponsible owners.

My opinion is that if we go to nature with a dog, it must be at least somewhat trained; that it unconditionally obeys when you call it, even if it's chasing a rabbit; that it walks beside you; that it doesn't jump on people even if it's super excited about every passerby; above all, that it doesn't bark and scare mountain dwellers. Regarding fitness and ability for such or other hikes depending on season and temperature, everyone who knows their dog well knows what it can and can't do. But I agree with MajaO. I know people who "love" only their own dog, people who have a dog as some status symbol or for profit. Of course those aren't dog lovers. An acquaintance of mine went to buy a dog in Norway. Meanwhile, every day in shelters many wait begging to be taken, and when it happens, they are immeasurably grateful for life, showing it every day. Of course, these pups have experienced much bad in the past, so on the other hand it's not easy to decide for such a furry one.

Anyway, I hope everyone who hikes with a dog is really sure what it can do and enjoys every step as its owner. Good luck to all dogs and their owners, and safe steps.

@janna: for such cases it's good to have pepper spray and whether the owner likes it or not.

@MajaO: I completely agree with you. Irresponsible (deliberately, not out of ignorance) ones can't be helped. They are just, sorry for the expression, 'dog idiots' or psychopaths. Precisely under such owners dogs suffer the most. Such people have no relation to living beings, neither to animals nor to people. But their mouths are full of how dogs are friendly, want nothing (they generalize to all dogs), how we who want to protect ourselves are panicky, psychopaths, don't like dogs,... People of course fall for their propaganda and quietly endure the terror.

Otherwise I really like dogs. Especially breeds I like: shepherds, retrievers, huskies,... I don't like various bulls and molossers, and also various poodles and similar degenerations that I can hardly call dogs.

If the dog is calm or doesn't even notice me (read: socialized) and of course not some vicious breed then I have nothing against it being unleashed and nicely by the owner.

It's different if I feel threatened in any way. Then I have to intervene regardless of the owner's: 'he won't do anything' and similar nonsense. I have the right to that and I won't back down before anyone. I'll walk the paths I choose regardless of crowds, number of dogs on them,... Of course I've also stopped arguing with such people. I calmly ignore their verbal terror that follows after the attack.

One more thing: I fully understand that the dog needs to go crazy outside, run,... especially if otherwise locked in apartment, kennel, chain,... But then put a muzzle on him. Then let him run as much as he wants. One wonders if things like leash, muzzle,... are really so expensive here that you need a loan for them. rolling

A dog can be nicely trained. Socialized. If a dog maybe due to breed, maybe due to certain needs (police, rescuers) can, I emphasize can, also be aggressive, it should definitely be on a leash, I allow muzzle even on very crowded places.

What about humans? Such a know-it-all. Who doesn't allow diametrically opposite opinion. Who literally imposes his opinion as the only salvific? What to do with such a human? Put him on a leash? Put a muzzle on him? I'm a lot in mountains, meet tons of people with all kinds of dogs, leashed or not, more or less trained (applies to dog and owner) but no, absolutely no bad experiences. Let alone feeling threatened. And with other animals, marmots, snakes, birds, chamois and ibex I always get along well. Sometimes I step aside, sometimes they. With those on two legs, yeah, with them it was oh boy.

It seems to me you're exaggerating a bit regarding dogs in mountains. I often meet someone accompanied by a dog, but in most cases it seems to me the dog doesn't enjoy mountains. Often the owner doesn't either.

Turbo, the most intrusive and aggressive about their opinion are precisely the irresponsible dog owners. Nothing can be said about them and their dog. And not just in words but also in practice.

You have negative experiences with people. Me too. In that we're the same. Maybe you have them in some area where I don't even think of problems. Who doesn't?

Some e.g. are bothered by speedy cyclists on hiking paths - someone complained to me last time at Celjska hut. Not me. If he crashes into me the chance he'll be hurt worse is much higher than me.

Also all my unpleasant experiences with dogs are unpleasant experiences with people. The exclusive culprit for such dog behavior is human! Either out of ignorance or deliberately.

If you've noticed, I never said anything bad about dogs. Always about IRRESPONSIBLE owners. And that's what bothers them and those who defend them. That they are exposed, can't hide behind their dogs anymore and are isolated from those owners who are responsible, who deal with their dogs, care for them, don't impose them on others and whose dogs are a joy to watch. That people look sideways more at them and not all dog owners lumped together. That bothers them (you)! And that's why those like us who distinguish and don't bash all owners or even dogs are annoying and need to be smeared as much as possible.

As for other forest and mountain animals. I also get along well with them. Luckily they don't have humans as owners!

For the pup I choose less crowded paths, I've never had problems, the dog enjoys the hills, not bothered by people, cows, horses.
In front of the hut he lies down next to it and waits to go on, not bothered by other dogs.
If he sees I'm putting the backpack in the car and not taking him, he's quite offended.
Really I don't take him in the heat or on harder paths, although he went down from Storžič without problems too.
I'd say that the dogs that owners take to the hills are mostly well-mannered or calm, many a hiker is worse or less cultured.
No hard feelings. Best regards.

A few words about politeness... We're sitting in the dark in front of the hut at seven, likewise an innocent pup similar to a Scottish shepherd, and a guy rushes by with his kokrkva, without words kicks the lying dog along the way because it was by the path?? and speeds off. I hope at least the looks pierced him since words probably didn't hit him in the right place. Another one who only likes his own dog...

Poor Lesi, Scots are my favorite dogs. That kokrkva though... well I distinguish them from degenerate poodles, no worries, they are just hunting dogs but not too sympathetic to me,...

Regardless of what's written above, I think that a dog must not and cannot be above a human in any situation. Basta.

Well, a person really doesn't know what to think. Topic "where to go with a dog", seems completely appropriate for a normal mountain portal to me. Some posts are already unhygienically long and stupid, come on stick to the topic and advise people where to take their dogs for a walk.

For me it was self-evident that our four-legger goes with me to the high mountains too, otherwise nowhere where there are ropes and pitons... We were most often on Krn, because it's the closest two-thousander to home. I really feel sorry that he's now too old (over 11 years our little rascal has) for such feats. But it's true that he always obeyed immediately, after all he was a trained rescue dog. Only once it happened to me on the way from Podbrdo to Črno prst, that someone yelled at me saying the dog has no business there, and he didn't move off the path fast enough for him.

How would it be that the dog doesn't move off the path? It has to be on a leash? For respect of all, including the law. If he wants without leash he can do that in his home garden.
I don't know what annoys me more, unleashed dogs or unleashed owners.
Sure the dog can really go around the world, just that it's on a leash and doesn't lick or bark at other people, otherwise it's better to just end its misery.

The dog was walking half a meter in front of me and wasn't running around, just a note... Because if there was no dog, the reaction would probably fly at me. Well, yeah, in short, I hope you never need help from a rescue dog. Ours was a specialist for avalanches and ruins.

Yes, it will! The dog is always good!

Once again, the last time I say, dogs are not guilty of anything but only you irresponsible owners. And stop using your dog to cover up your own carelessness or nastiness, in the sense like I'm not guilty of anything if the dog bothers you!

You and only you are bad. Innocent dogs pay for all the nastiness and sins of their owners.

Dogs aren't guilty at all, I'm writing that myself too, it annoys me when some dog gets between my legs. If the law says they must be on a leash then they must be on a leash. Even a good or small dog can still get between legs and cause a fall. I have my own idea about owners of such dogs, and that doesn't change.
Jus, Chinese say it's good for soup too. velik nasmeh
