Hi, does anyone know how the path from Soča to Bavski Grintavec is? Is there still any snow on the path? Thanks for the help. Nice greetings and safe in the mountains. Mirko

Hi, last week I was on Bavški Grintavec from Soča. The path is snow-free, markings are clearly visible. At the top there is a stamp and logbook. Attaching some pics and a short video for a better idea of the path.

With my companion, we were yesterday from Soča to Bavarian Grintavec. The weather held a bit sour all the time, ideal for hiking, rain anyway not much more than a sample. Actually just enough that due to wet ground a bit more caution was needed. At the top it was quite windy and cold. Clouds covered the top only for a short time so we weren't shortchanged for views either. On the return we stopped at the hunting hut and chatted about this and that. For the path we needed seven hours both ways. It's true, we didn't dawdle. Very nice tour which is quite demanding fitness-wise. I recommend it.

Bavarian Grintavec from Bavšica. Yesterday morning just before seven we started hiking. From this side we hadn't gone yet. Well up to the turn-off for Kanja saddle last year. But not over all three peaks yet. The path is marked. Below they renewed some markings. Further along the path they are faded and barely visible. Lonely and rarely visited areas here. We still met two hikers who went behind us. As a curiosity on this path all the way to the top of Bavarian Grintavec there is not a single chain or rope. They would come in handy in many places if the path was maintained. Especially when going from little Grintavec towards Bav. Grintavec the path goes downhill. There is a lot of scree and difficult descent until the path rises steeply again. Beautiful and scenic path when you reach the first peak Ruš 1995m. Then along the scenic ridge to the second peak. Peak Brda 2152m. And continue to Mali Grintavec 2333m. To Bavarian Grintavec there is still quite some walking. Yesterday clouds were covering the top. From Bavšica it was 16.5 km and 1850m elevation. Great tour in this wild lonely world.

Hi,

Has anyone been to Grintavec recently? What are the conditions like now? I'm interested in the path from Soča.

Thanks, best

Today I looked at it from Trupejev polden. I hope I saw it right. Up there in those heights it's all in snow.
That could be the one back there up left ...1

In this period of the year, despite the southern slopes up which the path ascends, even in "normal May" there is usually still quite some snow. In these unusual snow conditions now there is certainly much more. In summer it can be very hot there.

@pclop - is this the right one, yeah nasmeh

Hi, wondering if in the last 14 days some snow has melted or if someone hiked from Soča to Bavarian Grintavec and could tell how much snow is left on the path? Thanks nasmeh

Well, I went to check it myself velik nasmeh
Up to Planina nad Sočo it is great, easy and panoramic. From Lovska koča onwards there is no path, because two avalanches came down from the top this year, carrying everything below, including the path. The slope can still be crossed if you are willing to occasionally wade through scree and fallen trees and stick to the right. Then after about 200 elevation meters the marks appear again and the path is normally followable. On the path there are some smaller snow patches that can be crossed without major problems.
We encountered the main obstacle approximately 170 elevation meters below the summit, when the main scree field had disappeared under a snow patch, so the marked path was no longer visible, and what was dry was mostly loose rocks, so for safety we abandoned our intention to reach the summit after five hours of hiking.
Next time mežikanje
Also just below the summit it is warm, the sun strong, so the snow melts quickly and I believe that in 14 days or at most 1 month the path will be dry and normally passable.
Safe steps! nasmeh

Jeremish,
nice report. Don't worry about the summit, it will wait for you nasmeh

One tip, if you like. Send an e-mail about the damaged marked path to PZS, if you have a photo even better. Believe me, they will be grateful, as there is quite a bit this year.

16.06.2021. Almost summer tour. Where you still take winter gear with you. Then whether you need it or not. Snow still doesn't want to melt below Grintavec summit. Although the path was known, we lost quite some time searching for passages ahead from the lovska koča. Lots of fallen trees. Higher we found the path. Further snow patches pose no problems. Snow didn't sink much either. Once more we missed the direction in snow, turned back and found the path. At 2160 m we decided to turn back because from the gully onwards there was still lots of snow visible. Also time was pressing. Because the descent waiting isn't short either. Still 1700 elevation and 12 km. Met no one the whole way.

These boots are Alpinas and it's a pity they don't make them anymore. For crampons I had high boots with me. But since we turned back I didn't need them. Satisfied?
