On Sunday, 4.7 we were on Bavški Grintavec, up and down via direct path which is easier than that over Kanski pass, but still demanding. On scree there are still two snow patches on the path, but they pose no problems, so normally passable without crampons and ice axe. As predecessors mentioned, rock above quite crumbly, but with caution and concentration on path no problems for hikers used to demanding paths. For stamp collectors: stamp is there, torn from rock but can "stamp" it in logbook.

Monday 19.7 start at 6:45 from Zadnja Trenta. Path to Zapotok pasture in good condition, locally exposed so careful. From pasture to Kanja saddle no issues on path, just below saddle somewhat crumbly. Entry to very demanding climbing part well protected and quite exposed. Climbing with pegs and cable which can be annoying if not using protection set. Upper part path very crumbly and locally completely loose - watch falling rocks! Descent easier variant back to valley and shortly after 15 at car.

Mountain that deserves the "mighty" adjective, both in looks and access. On 11.8. was at summit from Zadnja Trenta via Kanja saddle and can say starting climbing part adrenaline (precipitous wall) then still very demanding to junction for Trenta via direct path. From junction to top some more climbing (problem more downhill) and cables, mainly crumbly terrain and scree all way to top. Views from top magnificent. Beautiful sunny day in heart of Bavški Grintavec and Zadnja Trenta area.

Now, when it's no longer so hot, it's a really pleasant tour, 3.30 to 4 hours, considering most have peak fitness now.

Finally a nice weekend that lured us to Bavarian Grintavec. We started the path from the parking lot in Zadnja Trenta towards Zapotok pasture. At Kanja saddle a cold wind awaited us, so we hurried with the self-belay set and headed into the secured wall. The upper part of the path has less protection, but it is very crumbly. A clear day allowed wonderful views in all directions from the top. On descent we met quite a few hikers heading to the top, and there was falling rock, so I couldn't believe that some go on such a path without a helmet. We then descended the easier path; when we reached the path to Kanja saddle we went along it for a while but soon left it and via pathless terrain joined the path from below Zagorelca Za Razorcem and onwards to Špička. This path I like very much due to the wonderful views and solitude. Above Zapotok pasture we left the path and descended via game trail to Zapotok. Refreshment at the stream, a couple of shots and back to the car. Bavarian Grintavec is a beautiful and mighty mountain. The approach from Zapotok pasture is very demanding. Even if we choose the slightly easier path, some cables, pegs and especially very crumbly terrain await us towards the top. Don't go without proper gear! Pictures here http://www.petersfoto.si

Is a helmet needed from Soča?

No, hanč, no helmet is needed for the trail from Soča. The trail is long (I have a sort of average pace for my 47 and it took me 5 hours to the top), but technically undemanding. However, last year water could not be refilled anywhere along the way. Lp!

My colleague and I on Saturday from the starting point in Soča to the top of Bavški Grintavec needed less than five hours, including a half-hour break at the Nad Sočo pasture and all the "photographing" along the way. Poles come in very handy because the trail is quite steep in places. Hanč, just boldly go for it! Good luck!

It always saddens me when someone vehemently claims that something isn't needed on a certain trail. I don't know where that insight comes from. One needs to know that most head injuries occur from falls and slips on completely "innocent" terrain. Rocks don't fall on motorbike riders either, yet "all" use helmets when driving. Helmets will also be mandatory for cyclists from now on. Actually, a helmet should become mandatory gear in the mountains.

LIKE ON THE ROAD, SO SHOULD IT BE IN THE MOUNTAINS TOO!!! I DEFINITELY AGREE WITH IGOR AND OTHER LIKE-MINDED PEOPLE THAT FIRST OF ALL ONE NEEDS TO TAKE CARE OF ONE'S OWN SAFETY AND DEFINITELY THE HELMET IS, AT LEAST IN MY OPINION, THE SMALLEST PROBLEM. LET'S CHANGE THIS PRACTICE TOGETHER, WE WON'T REGRET IT! LP ANDREJ

I agree with Igor and Andrej. Last time I went to Begunjščica from Draga over Preval and Kalvarija to Robleka. The whole way I had a helmet and no one else did. I completely don't care if people looked at me strangely or someone mocked me. It's sad that there's still such a mentality here that gear like helmet, harness... is considered showing off, boasting 'look at me'! penzionist: what a pity about the comment on your post,... we hope there will be fewer such.

Look what is written under "my mountaineering motto" in the summit book on Krnička gora. Lp

Bathroom stats is one thing, mountaineering another. My case a few years ago: completely innocent trip to Tolsti vrh above Golnik. With my partner we descended past Kriška gora towards Križi while some family was ascending. Surprise; grandpa took shortcuts, was so clumsy that about 10m above us he triggered a rock the size of Vladimir Klitschko's fist which rolled towards us, then bounced off another rock, flew over, a small chip like a bullet whizzed past my head. The guy didn't even turn around, just sped up, I wondered what if it had come a decimeter closer. Helmet wouldn't have hurt in that moment. Anyway, I recommend helmets in the hills, even because of natural erosion to which our mountains are especially prone - I think Bojan Ambrožič knows most about it, we visitors contribute a lot too, and there are more of us every year....

Mainly I agree with all of you regarding the helmet. I too am absolutely for it like Igor, that it should be mandatory in the hills, but I was asking a bit awkwardly, I meant mainly this trail from Soča due to exposure to falling rocks, like from Trenta. Otherwise I planned to go this weekend but it will be bad weather again. If next week nice weather we'll take a day off, since weekends are either bad or there are other obligations. Nice that there's this forum where I relax in the evenings with your wonderful experiences and even better pictures. It really gives me adrenaline even if I'm not up there. Nočko

I suggest that mandatory equipment - helmet - is also determined for the meeting in Kamniška Bistrica, since there are some dangerous steps up to the gate.
