"michael66", then don't go on tours where crampons or at least ice axe are needed (of course don't forget the helmet). You of course also have the option to properly educate yourself on using these pieces of safety gear!

"michael66", welcome to 40+ category, but advertising non-use of safety gear really isn't needed. If you don't use it, no need to recommend it to others!

If your arm holding the ice axe, even the tool if steeper, sinks to the elbow into snow most similar to thin polenta, you can't help much with it. And if you sink to your crotch, crampons don't help much either. So @michael66 wrote right: "Everyone assesses what is most comfortable and safe in the given case and conditions." You get there with experience, while gaining it we all occasionally "shoot a goat".

Yes, now in spring you quickly find yourself in some hole. Example from Vogla recently, where I went nicely past the hole, Marijan ended up to the waist in snow. When there you see the real conditions and decide on winter gear use.

Darinka, excellent pic. Reminds me... Don't cry Peter, "Did you fall in there too?"

In such cases, I think it could end badly if I were alone on the tour. Sometimes you need help to dig yourself out of such a mess

Descent from Mrežc, it was still snowing a bit and I was on snowshoes. Nothing special visible, just a slope at an incline. Suddenly I broke through near a rock hidden under snow and was up to my neck in a hole where I could barely move, let alone take off the snowshoes. Help from colleagues was more than welcome in that situation.

↗️ Via Zelenica ↘️ Kalvarija and Born's tunnels Path at sunrise. Would recommend the opposite direction for a circular route.

@Barbara_75, normally drivable, on lower part no longer quite as nice as before storms. Some gravel here and there and potholes.

Hi, given the warm winter, I'm curious what the path over Kalvarija to Begunjščica is like? Thanks

Yesterday, 28.12.2023, to Begunjščica via Central Gully, exit is now routed right because just too little snow, descent via Šentanc, starting point: Ljubelj. Not much snow, but lots of ice, so crampons recommended. From Mountain Hut at Zelenica to Great Summit of Begunjščica good hour ascending Central Gully. Conditions excellent. Not much snow, but gully still filled. Two jumps in gully icy, but no major issues. Track excellently made (lots of steps…). After ascent to Begunjska Vratača returned back and descended Šentanski Plaz. Not much snow here, but nice descent possible. Crampons, helmet and ice axe - mandatory gear. With two ice axes goes generally faster.

This is Central Gully and has nothing to do with route Y. Just for info.
