Please give me some advice Just now I was playing a bit with my new Pentax X-5, I went through all settings, and some questions arose with certain settings, I hope I'll get answers I. RECORDING PIXELS, I have available 16M, 12M (1:1), 12M (16:9), 7M, 5M (16:9), 5M. Which option do you recommend? II. I'm interested in what ISO RANGE means? I have the following options available: ISO 200-400, 200-800, 200-1600, 200-3200, 200-6400. I have set to 200-1600. III. what does D-RANGE SETTING mean? I have these two options to check: - Highlight correction - Shadow correction IV. What does SHAKE REDUCTION mean? This function should prevent blurry photos in case of camera shake, but I don't know what these options mean: - Sensor shift (I have this option set) - Dual - Off V. What does MF POSITION mean? I will be very grateful for every answer.

I. The number of recorded pixels refers to the number of image pixels in the picture (pixel is a group of dots). Larger file size, better image quality when printing. In your case 16M is the maximum. II. Refers to ISO light sensitivity. The higher the ISO number the more sensitive to light the camera is. That means, in daylight 200 and in the dark 400, 600, 800 or 1600. The range you have set means in which range the camera will automatically adjust the ISO value according to the light. III. Dynamic range means the ratio between the brightest and darkest point of the image. Best to use it when it's very bright (snow and sun), to avoid "burned" parts of the image. Shadow correction can bring additional details from shadow areas that would otherwise be quite dark. You can use both functions at the same time to get both benefits. IV. Means image stabilization against shaking (hand). Dual means optical and digital image stabilization. V. Manual focusing, which you set with the directional keys.

Hribovc88, and how did you end up with Pentax in the end? Anyway, we expect your first photos in the shortest time.

@Toplar, thanks for the answers. I'm also interested in how many pixels to set, or leave it at 16M? With these pixels I'm also interested if e.g. set to 16M the image quality will be better than if I had say 7M, or does it have nothing to do with photo quality? What about ISO? Leave at 200-1600? What do you advise for SHAKE REDUCTION? Sensor shift or dual? What about MF Position? Should I enable it or not? @Irina, I sold the Pentax RZ10 later, now I have Pentax X-5, you can already see the first photos in my photo gallery: http://picasaweb.google.com/blazspegelphotography

Best to leave at max. 16M for archive and later image processing on computer. For posting photos on forum just resize image to desired format on computer. ISO range is fine, as too high ISO makes images grainy (maybe better 200-800). Use higher ISO only in exceptional dark cases. Try both "Dual" and just optical "Shift Sensor". If Dual gives worse results, use only optical stabilization. Use MF only if camera auto-focuses on unwanted image part (e.g. want to shoot flower, but camera focuses on other object or background). Then manually focus image with directional keys. MF position on/off means you can save setting in USER MODE.

Thanks toplar , regarding MF I'm just wondering if better to leave disabled or enable it?

Focusing mode should be AF - auto focus. As for MF position, it's off.

What about shake reduction, what else do dual and shift sensor mean, does dual shake more, shift less or something hehe

Shift sensor means optical camera shake compensation, Dual means optical and electronic simultaneously.

For a test, what a regular Sony Cyber Shot can capture under good conditions:

And which compensation works better in practice?

Try one and the other. Dual doesn't work in all shooting modes. Probably Sensor shift is enough.

Then I'll leave it on sensor shift. What does this refer to? Focusing mode should be AF - autofocus. Is that the MF that you advised me to set to off? Thanks for all answers.

With the right directional key you enter the focusing type menu. The first position is AF, which is the most generally usable. But you can select another focusing mode and press OK at the end. Other options: Macro for objects 10-50 cm away, 1 cm Macro for objects at 1-20 cm distance, Infinity for very distant objects (mountains), MF manual focus setting, and AF Area selection for manual setting of the area where the subject to focus on is.

Ah yes, exactly, that's it, I remembered right away when I saw the picture. I have that on standard, but when I photograph some flowers I set it to flower. Thanks again.

I'm also interested in what image tone means, I have available: bright, natural and monochrome. Currently set to natural.

@Hribovc88, I just read that you're already selling the Pentax? What disappointed you so much?
