Jalovec

My personal opinion is that mountains are beautiful enough, no need for photo editing.
Otherwise it's a shame, this forum is losing its original purpose, just arguing and boasting...

These days I did Triglav and Grintovec, it pulls me to Jalovec for Saturday. Anyone up there these days, what are the conditions, anything special? From where? LP

Conditions are in a coma, started from the parking lot at half past 3 in the morning, temperature was 0, glacier totally soft. Sinking to the belly.

From Zapodno to Mali Kot, first snowfields there, snow mostly holds, above south-facing. Below Goličica wall big snowfield, no bergschrund yet, still careful across. Without ice axe won't go. Goličica wall mostly dry, only lower part small snowfield bypassable. Higher extensive snowfields up to saddle above Jezerca. Jalovec glacier nicely snowed, smooth, at least three skied. Follow summer path. Somewhere above Jezerca leave poles and forget them. If someone finds, happy if leaves at Dom Tamar or Izvir Soče. Towards summit snow on traverse left, later longer snowfield where path direct to ridge. Ridge mostly dry, only last part crossing to Loška side snow hard frozen. Today wind from S, not very warm. Descend to Jezerca and along path to Špička. Below Veliki Ozebnik some snowfields, one annoying to cross but snow just right without crampons. Descend to Zapoden.

Hello,

this has been written about already, but I have different information, so asking again: which descent from Jalovec to Tamar is easier - Kotovo sedlo or Jalovška škrbina. Mašera writes that he recommends descent via Kotovo sedlo. An acquaintance who has been to Jalovec says the opposite...

I've already descended both sides, I recommend Kotovo sedlo to you

Igor37 is right. Through Kotovo sedlo is absolutely easier. But inquire about the condition of the path. At this time there can still be heavily disturbing ice slabs.
Good luck.

Thanks for the information!
I'm planning the ascent for the end of July.

Kotovo sedlo definitely, descent over Goličica wall is quite an achievement, in the notch there's big danger of falling rocks, and descent over slippery scree isn't pleasant.

How is the descent to the shelter under Špička? What are the current snow conditions, has anyone been recently? From Rombon it looked dry on Sunday nasmeh

Hello. Jalovec is calling me next week too. Does anyone know if it's safe and which route up and down. I'd go from Vršič and descend to Koritnica. Thanks for the reply. Sonja

Jalovec from Vršič over Špička is totally fine. You can get up and down in one day and still have dinner in Kranjska Gora. Not a demanding tour if you have some fitness. I'm not an alpinist, just a hiker already in years. But it drags from Vršič the first three hours...

Yeah you can get there. But it's pretty long. In 2007 we went on the hottest day of that year, 15-7-2012. Whole day without a cloud, no breeze. Went from Vršič directly to Jalovec, then to Špička and back to Vršič. From Špička back it drags so much it's maddening.
I'd think twice in these hot days.
In 2010 I decided for afternoon traverse to Špička, next day to summit and back direct. Much better to me,
my humble opinion velik nasmeh

I'm interested in current conditions not years 2007 and 2010. Does anyone know how it is now. From the path to Triglav on Tuesday I saw that there's still some snow on Jalovec too. Is winter gear needed or not?
