Currently you can't avoid snow on any route ...

Today before five in the morning I park at Velikanka in Planica. Day slowly breaks, the path through the rain-soaked valley passes as if in a blink. At Dom v Tamarju I gaze at Jalovec in morning light and continue towards Kotovo sedlo. Since the path was damp, a bit more caution wasn't superfluous. From Kotovo sedlo I continue towards Jalovec. Soon thereafter I had to cross the first snowfield, several more crossings followed. With putting on and off crampons (on straps) I delayed myself quite a bitjezik, then at some spots I needed to make a couple of steps with ice axe for safe crossing of steep snowfield where cables were properly under it. I decided not to go over snowfield there (poor rigidity of crampon-boot system and large frozen steepness) and bypassed all on the right as I knew I could join marked path up there. Then followed just a couple less dangerous snowfields and summit was reachednasmeh. For early hour I was rewarded even with some viewsnasmeh. Weather then started worsening but as seen from valley later no issue. Returned same way. Lp!
It always enchants me :)1

Maybe it would even be possible under it, but who knows how it could end...21
For crossing I carved steps for myself22

Yesterday I was on Jalovec from the rear tente, past Zavetišče pod Špičkom. On the path you need to cross still 2 snowfields, so still can't go without using ice axe.

6.7.2013 we led a club tour to Jalovec. From Tamar to Kotovo sedlo - summit - descent to Špičko and to Soča source. My predecessors already more or less described here that from Kotovo sedlo to summit and down to Jezerc there are some snow patches.

I warn not to go on the tour without crampons and ice axe, because you must not slip on these snow patches.

At one spot we also set up a fixed rope, so caution is advised.

p.s.
for those who neglect to bring hat and gloves in gear, from Kotovo sedlo to summit conditions were wintry.....

good luck, vpzs Muša

urbancek you're right-- that snow patch is really the nastiest,, so mandatory bypass it right over rocks--can also on snow, but mandatory crampons-cause otherwise you fly off

best regards

Yesterday on Jalovec, up via ozebnik, down to Kotovo sedlo. Conditions as described before, up no problem, down 4 nasty snow patches ... advise against for inexperienced, if you slip then bye bye ... and some pics
Indeed, it is the king of the mountains ...1
Evening preparation for the ascent.2
Up the scree with ice axes, the path is under snow ...3
Glacier, there's still a lot of snow and it's frozen ...4
Along the edge you can see it's about 2-3 meters. Maybe it will last the whole year ...5
Full winter gear mandatory ... and short shirts ...6
A little more and we're out ...7
View down to the glacier.8
Now into the wall. Need to go across the snowfield straight left, then over a small saddle there are tracks ahead ...9
At the top of the glacier, behind is Goličica.10
A bit of free scrambling, not difficult.11
Then up the ridge ...12
A little below the summit.13
Then on the summit ... now need to go down.14
The first snowfield can be crossed only with an ice axe, for the experienced, but the entry to the snowfield is not easy because there is a hole between the snowfield and the wall.15
To me the nastiest snowfield, so I simply abseiled it.16
The last snowfield also only with ice axe, carefully ...17
Behind Mangart and MKM.18
Behind bivouac Tarvisio and Vevnica ...19
And quickly down to Tamar for ascent analysis (beer) ...20

Is the path from the last Trenta past the shelter under the peak dry or are crampons needed? Thanks!

Checked yesterday afternoon. Need to cross one snowfield which is quite steep. Crampons not needed, good steps made, but need to be very careful.

For visiting one of the most beautiful mountains in Slovenia, it's proper to choose a nice day. Today was definitely such a day.
In the freshly washed morning, my older son and I set off from Planica towards Dom v Tamarju. Up to here we were already well warmed up, as the path drags on nicely. We continued uphill through the valley and at the junction turned steeply up towards Kotovo sedlo. At the saddle, a rather cold wind with occasional strong gusts surprised us a bit. Obviously, we've been spoiled by the high temperatures of the last days. Above Kotovo sedlo, the path becomes quite demanding, but there is plenty of iron on the critical spots. In the gully a bit below the summit, we encountered a snowfield that can be nicely bypassed on the upper side with caution. But it's clear this is not a path for beginners. At the summit, peace and nice views awaited us, the wind also eased a bit, only here and there clouds raced and covered some peak.
We descended the same path, only lower we shortened the path across the scree.velik nasmeh
Interestingly, we enjoyed solitude all day, as we didn't meet any hikers on the path. It was a bit livelier only up to Dom v Tamarju.

Does anyone have a good photo of what the snowfield looks like on the southern path from the hut?

On Tuesday, my wonderful mountain friend and I started in Tamar and headed to Mala Mojstrovka (over Grlo, over Sleme and via Hanzova path to the top). From there we descended the southern side to Vršič. We continued the path via Kopiščarjeva path to Prisojnikovo okno and descended again to Vršič via Grebenska path. From there we went to Jalovec and returned to Tamar valley over Kotovo sedlo. On the way to Jalovec we had a small snowfield, but it was normally passable.
The day was fantastic and unforgettable!! nasmeh
