On Saturday after two years again on Jalovec. Up from Tamar over Jalovška škrbina, down to Trenta.
Jalovec remains for me the "royal" mountain, tsar, king, boss, god and batinasmile. The feeling of pride on the summit is exceptional.

On Thursday, 27 September, two groups of hikers in mature years accidentally met in the shelter under Špička smile (the group was rejuvenated by a mother and daughter from Carinthia). On Friday, then, in wonderful weather we all together conquered Jalovec big!

Hello!
In September we plan with friends an ascent to Jalovec from Tamar over Kotovo sedlo. We'd also like to visit the shelter below Špička, then back to Tamar on the best route. Is that the path past Goličica and over Jalovška škrbina? I would ask for advice and how long the return would take, i.e., shelter below Špička-Tamar. Thank you kindly.

Yesterday on Jalovec. Up through Goličica wall, down past shelter to Trenta.
I see that nothing much has changed since my last visit 3 years ago on this path. Where fixed ropes were, still empty, markings still sparse...
Otherwise nice day spent....

On Sunday a great day for Jalovec ascent, cloudless day which is hard to get on Jalovec. Tour started at Vršič, up to Škrbina and on in Goličica wall. From summit down to Kotovo sedlo, then steep path past bivouac to Tamar. Great joy after tour, path needs much caution, constant focus, watching markings. All agreed right ascent/descent chosen.

Hello!
Once again I ask if someone can help with info.
On Thursday we plan ascent to Jalovec from Tamar over Kotovo sedlo. This is supposedly better for ascent than Jalovška škrbina (scree). We would like to visit shelter below Špička, then best way back to Tamar. Is it the path past Goličica over Jalovška škrbina. Advice and approx return time, shelter Špička-Tamar.
Last week some snow high up, it will probably melt in the next couple of nice days. Thanks and regards

If you intend to visit the shelter under Špička the only sensible way is to go from Zadnja Trenta, the southern slopes will also surely be snow-free, while on NW sides snow can still remain in gullies. Up over Mali Kot (Jalovška škrbina) and Goličica, descent via the shelter.

I also think the circular route up over Kotovo sedlo and down over Jalovška škrbina is more suitable than in the opposite direction. From your writing I assume you plan to do this in one day. I don't know how old you are or how fast walkers you are, but I have to warn you about a few things. The normed times are as follows: Planica - Tamar 1 hour, Tamar - Jalovec 5-6 hours, Jalovec - Tamar 4-5 hours and Tamar - Planica 1 hour. Total, without longer break 12-14 hours. Visiting Zavetišče pod Špičkom extends it by another 3 hours. Of course if you are young, especially fast, you can reduce walking time by at least one third, but that's still at least 10-12 hours with the visit to Zavetišče. So I suggest you skip Zavetišče or overnight there. I did this tour this year on 11th and 12th July. Along the way I also visited pathless peaks Veliki Ozebnik, Vrh Zelenic and Goličica. If you decide for a two-day tour, I recommend climbing Veliki Ozebnik on the second day. When approaching the junction on return where left turns the path to Jalovec, right towards Jalovška škrbina, you'll see 2480m Veliki Ozebnik on your left side. You climb it via a nicely visible gully that goes somewhat left upwards. Once up the gully to the broad ridge turn right and with easy scrambling reach the summit. The whole ascent from marked path to summit takes 15-20 minutes. I wish you a nice and safe hike.

If you plan to start from Tamar, I suggest ascent over Jalovška škrbina, descent around via Kotovo sedlo. Then there are two options further, down scree (easier) or path past bivouac (that path requires a lot of caution). In this case Zavetišče pod Špičkom is out. No problem, you can do that sometime as separate ascent from Vršič or Zadnje Trente, in spring or late autumn. Then you have two tours, not just onenasmeh.

I wouldn't take a position on the choice of ascent, because both options seem equally attractive to me (from below Kotovo sedlo you have the most classic wonderful view of Jalovec, on the path over Jalovška škrbina you experience ascent on Goličica and walk on Jalovec ridge).

If you really want return past Zavetišče pod Špičkom, then from there (at least) three options:

1.long and strenuous: return and ascent back all to Jezerc over slopes of Veliki Ozebnik and quite dangerous descent over Goličica to Tamar,

2.logistically complicated: fast descent to Zadnja Trenta and from Koča pri izviru Soče bus to Vršič or Kranjska Gora and then hitchhike to Planica.

3.long and strenuous: from Zavetišče head towards Vršič and then:
3a. Branch off the path back left up towards Jalovška škrbina and from there steeply down (well protected) to scree and to Tamar.
3b. Traverse all way to Vršič and from there walk to Tamar or hitch to Planica.

Edit: anyway for "full" experience I also recommend overnight in Zavetišče pod Špičkom, which is really such a special place... Next day you can leisurely walk back to Vršič, treat yourself to ascent to Slemenova špica and descent to car.

Hello!
Many thanks to all for the detailed advice. We decided as last written. Ascent over Kotovo sedlo and overnight in Zavetišče pod Špičkom. Second day nicely to Vršič and over Slemenova špica to Tamar. But does anyone know if there is any snow patch on this path and if crampons would be needed?
Many thanks

Hello!
On Sunday I plan to go to Jalovec from Tamar. I'm wondering if both routes (via skrbino and Kotovo sedlo) are similarly demanding - technically I mean ... and comparison of both routes with Turska cez zleb and Triglav past Kredarica... I know these 2 are much shorter but I'm wondering if any section to Jalovec is much harder...
Thanks for the answer

If you went from Kredarica to Triglav, then the difficulty is approximately the same, only much more climbing.
Problem (at least for me) was the descent over Škrbina, as the path (2 years ago) was very poorly followable.
Be careful not to descend to Trento instead of Tamar velik nasmeh

For me, the path over Kotovo sedlo was one of the nicest paths in the Julians. Conversely, the descent over Škrbina didn't excite me. But it's a matter of individual decision. Someone can tell more...

Best is Kotovo sedlo up and past Špička to Trenta, only logistics problem. If you have that option it's ideal.
