deteljica27@ sure you can to Vojak's hut by car, sling it over shoulder and go, that's why cars have seatbelts, use em as straps. Safe drive

On Saturday 9.2. the path to Pleša and Razdrtega was well snow-covered and trodden, icy in places so crampons are useful. Snow starts already at the parking lot. Equally long path past St. Hieronymus. Today there's already some additional new snow and it's still snowing.

I was there yesterday. Crampons more than recommended for the "steep path".

Yesterday and on Saturday conditions on Nanos were fully wintry - icy path in places, towards the top hard crusty snow and quite bad bora whose gust can easily throw you down. Since we returned via Janez's valley, I only saw the helicopter at the base which came for the hiker who slipped midway on Pleša, probably flew over the rocky drop and then through the woods. Hats off to the pilot! The guy at the base talking about passing the injured was wearing Adidas Nanos is no hillock!

Yes that's how it is with us in Slovenia when people show no bit of responsibility to themselves let alone others. I also met such a tough guy then. And then no weekend or day goes by without dead and injured coming down from the mountains.

I also met the "gentleman in Adidas" yesterday when returning from Nanos. He just laughed at the remark about inappropriate footwear - speechless But the hiker's slip was a big shock for all who were/we were nearby at that moment...

With my boyfriend we had backpacks already packed but still decided to go elsewhere. Didn't feel like risking it, already last week it was icy and very slippery. When we buy crampons then we'll go up in such conditions too.

Proper crampons require an ice axe and knowledge of its use. Small microspikes are no substitute for caution.

Yes, we plan to go to a course too, we don't want to risk unnecessarily. Mountains will still be dangerous as always but a bit more safety anyway...

Suggestion! Next time below Nanos try the right path variant. Nowhere described. Starts right of the water spring and runs along the scree. Path unvisited. Technically less demanding than steep path but physically more. Basically 3X less snow than left side because all blown away.... When windy... rock'n'roll begins... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTPDYXWsLbc

Just for info or consideration - the unfortunate hiker had crampons on per eyewitnesses (if he had ice axe too maybe he could stop the slip) ...safe steps to all

When we, the rescuers, arrived at the injured person, he didn't have crampons on his boots. For the conditions that prevailed on Sunday on Nanos, full winter gear was needed - ice axe and crampons. More than half of those passing the accident site to the top or down the valley were without necessary gear. We also admired the Superga shoes...

The right variant path along the scree is unmarked and very steep towards the top - much worse for slipping than the marked steep path. In snow you can sink your boot, where it's windblown you hit only ice covering rocks.

Here Pavel from Trieste. I've visited favorite Nanos many times. Yesterday I went up steep path and from first belay on it was quite "awkward". No crampons and for descent I chose "Janezovo". Lots of snow, but certainly less dangerous. Best wishes to injured, we probably know each other. LP

Today I went up again... to archive a bit... Conditions on terrain to plateau normal for this winter time. Plateau trampled by many people. Trampled spots icy, to extent requires hiker mandatory use of proper winter boots. Don't mean high boots etc... but real winter mountaineering boots. Any other footwear needs crampons. Below couple pics from slip site and approximate path... https://picasaweb.google.com/100977868404073803897/Nanos

I'm really curious if he had crampons warm in backpack maybe. Understand if health issues, but without crampons in such conditions... Will he get at least a fine?!
