Yesterday we also went on the 24th traditional Matjaž hike to Peca.
Since winter conditions, sometimes already quite unbearable on the roads, didn't allow us early arrival in Črna na Koroškem, we headed up a bit later.
Start of the path, we boldly, first a bit along the road to the sign for the hut on Peca, then the path starts ascending and stays that way to the top.
Lots of snow, cold: -15 (maybe even more minus), path nicely trodden, no problems up or down, great, snowing all the time, real winter cold idyll - as befits this time of year.
Many already heading down, but when we arrive at the hut it's still full of visitors.
We warm up a bit, have a snack, then our brave guys and gal head to the top, the rest stay in the hut and wait for them. On top it was: -21 degrees, wind blowing 80 km/h, eek, they tell us when they return, mandatory crampons - congrats to all four, and to all others who went to the top yesterdaynasmeh
Descent was quick, then also viewing ice sculptures (they've been making them since 1993), all dedicated to the legendary King Matjaž, on the Mitnek plain in Podpeci, really nice, worth seeing nasmeh
Friendly waiter in the Matjaž inn tells us that this year in this severe cold the sculptures preserved well. Well, we were lucky to see this art - congrats to all sculptors, really something beautiful, all the best, nice regards velik nasmeh

Yes, really brave, but how to motivate yourself, in such weather, for leaving the warm bed and the hot....

Yesterday my hiking friend from Slovenj Gradec called me and said the hike happened, but they only climbed to the hut, not to the top due to extreme weather conditions.

Hribovc88, I was at the top and it wasn't so horrible as they told... it was cold, windy, but if properly equipped there's no reason not to go to the top. nasmeh

Today I was with my brother and mom at the top of Peca. Planned starting point was "karavla", but bad road conditions stopped us quite a bit lower. So we hiked to karavla for about an hour. We practically didn't see tracks of predecessors, as snow covers them right away. Consequently we were wading most of the time knee-deep and more in snow. From Dom na Peci onwards we noticed a fresh trail and a few minutes later met two guys returning from the top. They surely made our ascent much easier. Views were wonderful all day. At the top an extremely strong wind greeted us, so we descended quickly. Overall a wonderful tour. Recommend in the next days while winter temperatures last.

ps. Road from Mežica currently not passable without snow chains, even with them it can be critical at times. I assume they'll fix it by the weekend.

"From Dom na Peci onwards we noticed fresh trail and few minutes later met two guys" (us)
Today it was quite demanding to Dom na Peci. Went from Topla(mine), first trailblazing 2h to hut, snow over knees, often to waist.

16.02.2012 With Romana today again repeating the route from Kum to Peca. Already while driving we saw that it would be windy. When leaving the road, we plunged knee-deep into new drifted snow. Old trail not visible, felt it only with feet. Wind drifted large snowdrifts. It blew hardest and swirled snow at Knipsovo sedlo. Above mine boundary Peca still very windblown, now snowdrifts around mine. On descent noticed wind blew half the path. Regards.

Since it's not steep, you ski like in summer. But the wind took care of that with small snow drifts.

21.02.2012. Romana and I decide to go to Peca. My wish was to go from Kumra to check the condition of the path to Peca a bit. Romana decided to go with touring skis along the track to Peca. First I drop her off at the ski parking lot, then I drive to upper Koprivna. At the top or somewhere on the path from Knipsovo sedlo to Kordeževa glava, we have the same path so we can see or meet each other. My hike starts under Kumru, the road is slippery, currently not salted. When I turn onto the forest road, I notice that snow and wind destroyed the work from less than a week ago. But with snowshoes I progressed quite fast, just making sure not to miss the hard base under the new snow. At Knipsovo sedlo everything is shrouded in fog. I'm worried about Romana's tour, so I walk more towards the left side. At the fallen sign I circle around it and continue. The fog disappears for a moment, I quickly look around and spot Romana two hundred meters away, she spots me too, we wave to each other, then I wait for her. She tells me that she had been waiting ten minutes in place and was considering returning back along her tracks because of the fog. Then together to the top. Later at Knipsovo sedlo each takes their own route again. The pictures say some things. Lp.

Today with touring skis from Bistrica along the track and then to Kordeževa glava. The track was quite icy in the morning. Continuation towards Knipsovo sedlo maybe with skis, to the saddle already quite trampled. The summit of Kordeževa glava however is crusty. Lp.

I was on Peca on Saturday. Road drivable without winter gear to "karavla", both from Črna and Mežica. From karavla to hut a bit icy, further no problem.

12.03.2012. From Kumra over Peca past both huts and Mihev to Pristava. Also at Kumru we sat 40 minutes for some body maintenance, needed it, then towards Peca. Quickly we assumed responsibility and went on without snowshoes. Here too at the start quite bare. Later used the track I maintained all winter. Even on the sunniest slope didn't sink too much. Wind didn't rush to show its power now either, whenever possible turned away from it. Quickly the respectable steep passed for us, on the slope not much snow and it was still frozen. Crampons put on above Knipsovo sedlo, took off under Tomazeva koča, to there the path iced. Now the remaining path under the freight cableway, along road past Mihev to valley. At intersection Koprivna, Helena, Crna closed our loop, lasted less than 24h or over 90km and over 5000 vertical meters. We added 200 due to drifts on Smrekovec, currently path on Smrekovec like heavily wavy sea. Enough. Lp
