On Saturday, 27.02 I headed to Peca, although the forecast didn't promise great views, which confirmed in the end. Started from Podpece then slowly towards the top... Path to the top nicely trodden, no fear of getting lost even though I didn't know the path. To the hut weather still ok, further very cloudy, foggy, on top of course strong wind blowing, so no desire for longer stop. On return already snowing, but descent ok, no crampons needed, just a bit more attention and caution. So, for sunshine I'll have to go to Peca another time

Today trail broken from Mitnek to the top of Peca. Well, to be honest, I don't know if I was exactly at the top, because there was such fog and it was snowing too, couldn't see 5 meters ahead. Snow on top probably over two meters, since not even one pine is sticking out!

Hope that bit about the top is more of a joke, otherwise it gives me the impression you don't know Peca well and risked a bit in that weather. (Going today with Nejc to find the top.) Regards.

@janezs I do know Peca, but visibility was really bad, so I turned back at some point because everything was white. When I got home I checked GPS data and found out I got off track somewhere and reached the northern edge of the plateau. I was about 100 meters as the crow flies from the top and approx 50 meters below the summit.

DIDN'T MAKE IT TO PECA WITH NEJC We started as agreed, left one car in Pristava. With the other drove to the junction, Kumer, Jekl, Ledrovc. That was our starting point for Peca. How much snow? Lots, dry powder that milled under snowshoes. Most of the way Nejc broke trail first. We didn't need the markers which were very low, since we have the route in our "head" for years. Problems started above tree line. Wind started blowing and with altitude thicker and thicker fog appeared. When we reached the flatter part of the path, we walked just by feel. A few times we missed the path a bit but quickly got back. Even the direction signs at Knips saddle we searched for a short time. Successfully continued up the slope leading through the pass under Debele Glave. Then, when we reached our own track, we pondered. Of course I know the path well, walked it many times, a couple of years ago cleared it from overgrown brush. Fog got so thick we couldn't judge distance, nor if ahead was descent or ascent. Decided to turn back, if there was a direction sign or just a pole sticking from snow at the bottom of the clearing, we would have looked for it and had the marked part to the top. But like that we turned back even though we expected our tracks to be drifted over. In reality they were. Now correction awaits us. In the morning I wrote to Robi if he's joking. I had in mind only the sentence he wrote "don't know if I was at the top". The top is marked so you know if you're at the cross and logbook.

@janezs: I know what's at the top... I got to some red bench barely a meter sticking out of the snow. So I decided to go SSE from it to the top, which per GPS was obviously the right decision, but I turned before that. As you say yourself, due to fog and snowing I saw nothing ahead; when I thought I would step up, I stepped down etc... Nothing there. So I better decided to go back the same way and my tracks were just faintly visible... After yesterday's adventure richer by one experience, namely not smart to poke around mountains in such weather if you really don't know the terrain. Since usually no issues with orientation and finding path I was a bit sad leaving the slope, because this time mountain and weather won. But when I read your comment today Janez, I grinned a bit and said to myself conditions must have been really bad if even cats like you two didn't make it up. No big deal, mountain will wait. My trip was very welcome to me, to others planning Peca GOOD LUCK! Oh, and careful crossing slope from Dom na Peci toward saddle, lots of snow there very unstable and with every load nice amount slides into forest! Recommend detour via Mala Peca. At least as of Tuesday 8.3.2016. Best regards

volgemut With the car you can drive almost to the guard post from the Mežica direction. Leave the car at the intersection where the road from Črna-Mitnek and the Mežica road join. You can't go further by car due to snow on the road. Regards

Start from center of Mežica (by hotel) and no need to search anything.

Best regards. I'm interested in the conditions these days from Podpece to the summit. How far by car? Is ascent without snowshoes possible. Thanks for the answer and regards.

If you look one page back we walked without snowshoes long ago. Everywhere to parking, only at Mitnek be careful road closed higher due to landslide (can bypass - 13.3) Good luck
