I checked the PD Mežica page under CURRENT.
It says the hut is closed.

Thanks for the answers. I just wanted to know if the hut is open on weekends, as was the custom in previous years. In winter, of course, members of the mountaineering club take turns. Last year we were on Peca in July but the hut was closed. During the hiking season - the club had problems, so there was no caretaker. I'm interested if those issues have passed.
Otherwise, my husband and I manage in the mountains, whether ours or across the border.

It was quite spring-like up there on the weekend. The secured path was (dry) too. On the Austrian side, you can still manage with touring skis somehow. As much as I hiked up in winter, the hut was mostly open on weekends.

Domch. I wouldn't agree with your statement, in the last twenty years the hut has been almost always closed in winter, except when it's Matjaž's hike. There are some individual exceptions. Shame it's like that, (I'd need the hut more in winter than in summer.) LP. Janez

I also remember years when instead of the closed hut in winter the hospitality was offered by the team of duty youths in the former guardhouse.
But it's true that there were less pleasant meetings with border guards at the guardhouse in Podpeči.

"Less pleasant encounters" you could avoid with approach from Topla.
At the guardhouse it was always full of strange questions, as if going to mountains to smuggle something.
Huts were all closed in winter back then anyway (KSA), bivouacs on lock. So no crowds on paths that I now avoid.

Where are the good old times when you were really glad if you met someone and greeted them happily.
The only good side of today's crowds is that I discover old unpopulated paths and nooks.

Well, it wasn't so bad with border guards at guardhouse, several times on descent from Peca I played volleyball with them. Years 76-77, I myself was border guard on Italian border.

Last time on 31.3. not much snow, a bit before hut to saddle almost nothing then more higher up. Now after rain some snow fell again but probably (don't drive car) no snow fell at guardhouse. For this path enough if you have gaiters and crampons at least for reserve.
