http://www.grzs.si/?MenuID=1&NewsID=1065, the warning is of course general, as is the danger assessment, but it can be much more dangerous somewhere, less somewhere else, that's why we need to do some test, or even more tests on the basis of which we can at least approximately assess the danger, which we of course must know how to assess.

when folk rushed to Kredarica at avalanche danger level 3, nobody complained.
now the guy goes up, says how and what and that there's no panic, and already fire in the roof.
anyway I fully believe it's like that. KS Alps didn't get nearly as much snow as western Julians and avalanche danger accordingly. Or the question is where new snow fell at all, since even western Julians had snow line mostly around 1700 m.

apovalej nice pics cool

I wouldn't say little snow fell in KSA. From watching the precipitation map, quite a bit of snow fell in this area. Of course the snow line is a bit higher than in the Julians (if NE wind just opposite) and Cojzova hut at 1793m, where half the precipitation mixed with rain too, is not a reliable datum on height of new snow. Yesterday it cleared a bit, so I could see Kalški Greben, which was well snowed.

frnikola, nobody complains, we just tell the guy when there's danger that the tour is advised against. Period. If he still goes I won't sleep less calmly because of it... some follow good advice, others don't. What can we do? When there's "mess" again they won't dare to mountains till July. Sad, but that's how it is, always same debates aren't we tired of it? Best to be quiet, nothing post, maybe throw up some tour... those at least leave "thumbs up"eek

Igor, regarding tests, one can't rely on them, even if you do several at different spots with different conditions.
By my experience the best avalanche forecasters are some locals who for long years observe snow terrain and exactly know where and under what conditions avalanches release on which slopes.
When a few weeks ago I planned to climb Butinarjeva grapa, I did a snow profile on scree above Vršič and even though danger assessment was 2, nicely and carefully turned around and went somewhere safer.

Frnikola, regarding complaining, it's always like that: nobody complains until nothing happens. When it happens, usually only those who stayed home complain.

Jus, there will always be some who feel that we unnecessarily salt them wisdom. Our messages surely not meant for them and because of such I never think better to be quiet. Some always have something "smart" to say. Comments up here often not reflection of knowledge and experience but some momentary feeling,
I shudder at the thought that someone planning ascent to some Rinka would base decision on "frnikola-ing".

Could someone please comment on avalanche hazard, if any, of numbered points on the pic. Not much snow, it's processed and somewhat icy, air temp +1.

On Sunday four of us visited the top of Skuta. First to Grintovec (more in my description in the dedicated topic - "Path to bivouac below Grintovec is dry, further snow starts, but to Mlinarsko sedlo no problem") then from Mlinarsko sedlo also to Skuta.
We didn't go over Dolgi hrbet, but along the marked path below it. 95% of the time on snow, but luckily none on the most dangerous section of this path (rock below the place where our path joins the path over Dolgi hrbet). From here nice easy walk to Skuta.
Back same path to bivouac below Grintovec. Second day from there over Sleme to bivouac below Skuta, then down unmarked path to cable car station at Kokrsko.
Since we went in the afternoon, snow was melting, didn't need crampons or ice axe. At least our opinion. Of course not for morning.

My next hike was supposed to be Skuta, but from the pics I see I need to wait a bit more. Not really a fan of trudging through snow. Last time on 1 May to Kompotelo it sank to knees. I wouldn't mind three mates to keep me company either. Keep enjoying!

Was on Skuta today, now yesterday nasmeh Weather really wasn't great, but I persisted anyway. When I reached the rocky climb below Skuta, conditions got so bad I couldn't see three meters ahead. So head on shoulders and back. Just before the bivouac below Grintovec heavy rain and hail. A little rest, snacks from backpack and waiting... when it calmed a bit, the sun peeked out and the question arose, go back or not? 'they say second time goes easier' velik nasmeh otherwise still quite some snow... Started from Kranj at 7, home at 22h.. quite long. Regards Damjan

Crampons/ice axe still needed? How is it over the ridge - still winter gear?

For over Dolgi hrbet I can't give exact info, no snow visible, at least from below. Path under the ridge is different, every now and then cross some snowfield, on the scree below Skuta my predecessor turned back, so I had to blaze the trail myself. Slowly but surely. nasmeh Didn't have winter gear, but recommended of course. If nothing else for faster and 'safer' progress over snow-covered scree. Of course depends on weather and time of hike too. Regards

Evening before last from lower cable car station to Kokrsko sedlo to the top of the saddle and on to bivouac below Grintovec. Today morning from bivouac below Grintovec to top of Skuta. Descent to bivouac below Skuta and over Žmavcarje to the valley. Nice tour! Weather held up well. Regards

This morning I didn't make it to Skuta. I got to the bivouac below Grintovec without problems. There are some small snowfields, but they do not cause a problem. The snow today was medium, not too soft, not too frozen. I was at the bivouac so early that I literally woke four Czechs. One even knew Slovenian. Further from the bivouac the fog thickened every fifty meters. I crossed some small snowfields, but after twenty minutes I reached a bigger one where you couldn't see the end from either side, so I gave up and returned to the bivouac. Skuta will wait for summer now.

velkavrh..can you tell me when you took the first two pics...at what time
like
velkavrh19. 06. 2011 10:04:41
Yeah, sure. I took these two pics on the way back around ten in the morning, fast mists were racing over Kalška gora, so I barely caught it. I was already at Suhadolnik hut at half past seven in the morning, then I decided to go check at least the bivouac below Grintavec, since I hadn't seen the new one yet, every time I criticized the state of the old one. Unfortunately it was occupied, so I couldn't check the interior. Because of the fog Skuta was also out. Planning this tour again sometime at the beginning of July, and back to the hut via Dolgi hrbet and Grintavec. L.P.

Thanks for the info, it seemed to me you took pics a bit later, because when I got to the hut from Kam.Bistrica at 6 am there was very dense fog and strong wind, so I drank a good coffee and went back to the valley...L.P.
