@alpin: when you click the upper link, then click also: "Click here to go back to Picasa Web Albums". If some pictures still don't open, tell me which ones and I'll fix them. @jedriličar: yes, passable without problems.

Did the same tour on Saturday, ideal weather, windy at the top. Snow good for ascent, soft for descent. Ascent 5 hours, descent via sovatna 4 hours, all in all, go while conditions are good ...

Has anyone been to Vrata valley recently, to Stenar or Škrlatica, what are the conditions?

On Friday in Vrata valley friendly sunny weather, no wind, ideal for walks with kids around Aljažev dom. Higher up ... avalanches rumbling from Stenar and Stene, interesting view from safe distance . If interested, afternoon I'll add some pics ... LP

We went Thursday to bivouac under Luknja (judging by the conditions I'd say first this year). Even at night small avalanches from Stene didn't stop, so we didn't go even to Luknja...snow starts at ca 1200m and at 1600m 100cm. Friday morning when the sun hit Stenar as facko said...constant party - like in cinema Sovatna already quite avalanched with much dirt on snow - at least from afar it looked so, so skiing probably not enjoyable

Sovatna, Stenar, Kriški podi - it's been about a year since I was there. Can't wait for the end of May or the beginning of June when it'll be safer to go. L.P.

Who went up there last few days, what are conditions like, full winter gear needed?

Sovatna mostly dry, over Stenar saddle still quite some snow, same upper summit roof. Up to saddle trodden by hikers. Morning can be frozen in shade, recommend at least ice axe and sturdy boots. Snow starts towards bivouac IV at ~1700m

Today I was on Stenar. The path is dry to 1800m, on the slopes I turned right and up scree to the summit. Crampons and ice axe mandatory. In the morning snow does not sink in, by 12h it was sinking up to 10cm.

From Vrata valley towards Škrlatica and Dolkova špica, higher I turn towards Stenar saddle. Ascent on scree quite unpleasant, relief when I reach larger patch of firm snow, ascent pleasant there. Higher to saddle snow frozen too. So use crampons and ice axe and safely reach the scree wall itself, which is not covered in snow but scree and sand. From saddle go left to Stenar. Summit light breeze and nice views. Descent via Sovatna to Vrata

NEW, how long did the route take you. What about snow conditions, possible without ice axe and crampons??

The whole route took me a bit less than eight hours. For a safe approach to the Stenar saddle yesterday, it made sense to use both.

new, your description and pics came just in time, even better would be a pic of the valley towards Stenar Gates in the direction of your ascent, as I'm more precisely interested in where snow starts and how much of that valley is still snow-covered, or how many bare patches there are and how long they are. If you have such a pic from which this would be visible, I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

rockyboy, the bare ledge is actually only one, which you can see on the first picture; in between there's a really annoying scree. Snow starts on the lower or initial part of the ascent to Stenar Gates; if you prefer walking on snow rather than on scree, choose the ascent on the right side. If you choose this variant, the entire ascent can be done on snow. If you want to avoid the snow patch, it's like this: up to half the ascent no problem, second half or the access to the wall under the gates themselves can't be bypassed; the snow patch is quite long though. Unfortunately, I don't have any clearer picture.

Hello, does anyone know if there's still any snow in Stenar Gates or is it all dry? Thanks!
