Stol

Now I have a question too.

I have already found some on the forum but I'm interested in the actual time from the hut on Stol to the hut on Golica? The net says ca. 5 hours, some say 8 but that's probably in the other direction as the path ascends and there's quite some height difference, from Stol to Golica it descends and that probably makes a difference of up to 1-2 hours?

I want a realistic estimate of average walking because we plan to go the same day from Valvasor to Stol and then direct to Golica and overnight there and then down from Golica.

Also, how is the safety on this path, what is the path like and is it well marked, because once the hutkeeper on Stol told me that two girls years ago walked an eternity to Golica, they almost missed them...

Saturday forecast some cloudiness and I wonder if you think it's OK to go from Stol to Golica as probably not good if a thunderstorm catches you there...

Hope someone replies by then... regards

Castro37, maybe I can help with your question. I walked this path in both directions, but years ago. In the Stol-Golica direction you descend a lot, only at the end is the ascent over the meadow to Golica top. I don't know your pace, but 5 hrs is realistic. In the opposite direction the hardest ascent is just before Stol when tired (some scree) and you ascend the whole way. So that direction is longer in time (ca. 2h). Then it was well marked, the path is almost the entire trace very visible as the only main under peaks. Branches are also well signed (e.g. to Vajnež). So go ahead, hope no heat and thunderstorm as more open. Regards Bogdan.

Bogdan, many thanks. Hope the weather is good on Saturday, as the hut on Golica is already bookedsmile.

Yesterday we visited our northern neighbors a bit and for the first time went on the "Klettersteig" to Stol, back past Celovška hut. Very nice tour that will be repeated. Weather not too hot, views super. Protections are fine, that rock still trapped under the cable but no issues. As I wrote under the trip, for average hiker add half hour ascent to junction, from there 3 hours marked to summit.

On Sunday from Trate via climbing path to top of Stol. Protection on ascent in excellent condition, path completely snow-free. Descent via Zabreška to Valvasorjev dom. Wonderful traverse of Stol.

Just one short question - what's the road like, especially the last gravel part?
like
VanSims2. 07. 2013 22:09:39
I can answer that, although three years ago I didn't go via the climbing path to Stol but via Celovška hut and Belščica saddle, so the Austrian normal route.

The road is bad (somewhat like that one in Kot), if they haven't fixed it by now.

Strange, since Haider had a weekend house there somewhere...

If you mean the Austrian access, the road in the last part is bad, many deep potholes, so "throw in first" and go slowly. It is doable though, parking was full. Regards wink

The dilemma whether to go to Kočna or Stol today was decided by some laziness tongue.... to Stol there is still a bit less walking wink.

So morning start from the parking at the lake in Završnica, forest path to Valvasor, up Žirovniška, down Zabreška. Path without special features, unpleasant cold wind during ascent but it calmed at the summit and I stayed there 45 min... No big deal smile.

On the way down some action... midway on Zabreška path 5 or 6 cyclists passed me... yesterday they rode from Golica over Vajnež to Prešeren hut, slept there, today rode down the valley... crazieswink!!
There was no one to preach to, but I sat down for a bit anyway....1
Right on the top.....2
... and right a bit below the summit...3
The lake with the islet is as if on the palm of the hand...4
From some sections of the Zabreška path, the lake in Završnica is also nicely visible... my starting point and goal today.5
Kamikaze....6
It looks like the markings have kids too ;-). This one has a really flat little daughter... I'm curious if she'll grow a bit...7

Stol, three days ago... we happily arrive from Zelenica, where I must praise the warden and the cook, full respect, bow to the kitchen!!! Of course that scree under Stol was not pleasant for my foreign guests but anyway, we made it through. We still reached the hut. Warden Betka "delights" us that the hut is full regarding sleeping. Reservation 40 English... great, nothing to do, but a room was found anyway. But lo and behold, no English anywhere. Now the question!!!! Who and how booked this. Who is such a jerk, can't say otherwise, books but doesn't cancel. Logistics at 2150 m is not just jump in the car and go get..., no, it's a responsible business. Inquiries around huts showed no English anywhere. Must admit, Betka, you hid anger, disappointment, sadness due to rip-off well. We had a nice evening and morning, visibility super, path to Medji dol beautiful... but that feeling that even in mountains you get screwed somewhat spoiled the tour for me, don't understand such people. Wardens, next time take data, and advance for 40 people no problem, surely wouldn't happen. Betka, thanks for service, kitchen super, feeling super! Thank God we have such hut keepers!

Maybe that's payback for ripping off 2.20 EUR for half a liter of plain water without a receipt. It makes one's thirst go away.

I think today there were many of us who go to the mountains for the love of it, disappointed again, because our weather forecasters blundered into the dark again. In the morning it still looked good, then fog, wind and even rain. We saw the hut only from inside. But it was still quite interesting. We went to Stol via Žirovnica, down a bit our own way. Quite a few people. Path except being wet and slippery without features. Views next time.

....Stol yesterday..... Instead of nice views fog was dragging on the top. Many small hikers from the Ormož mountaineering camp we met a bit below Prižnica, who were just ascending. Hope they safely reached the goal without rain...wink But lots of flowerssmile

I'm interested if the path (descent from the ridge between Stol and Potoški Stol - drop about 400 m) to the Carinthian side over scree to the start of the climbing path is well visible - thinking of going to the ridge from Valvazorjevo, descend down and ascend the climbing path. Similar to Via Italiana (descent from saddle to Nogara).

That from the ridge is not visible (at least not to me). But you can go like I did yesterday: Tinčkova hut, Belščica saddle, Celovška hut, climbing path, summit. Back to the Carinthian side between both Stols and the same way to the start.
Other variant - over Seče saddle, Stou hutte, along the road past parking (barriers), to the entry of the climbing path, summit, Seče..
at the beginning of the climbing route1

Heinz, thanks for reply. I'll figure something out, or I'll make a big detour from Jesenice along the road to Trat.

when the path brings you to the saddle between Stol and P.Stol continue another cca 200 m when on your right cca. 2m above the path you spot the little man. It's poorly visible. From there on the path is well visible. lp
