Monte Glemina da Gemona ;

More hill than mountain, let alone a real peak. Great path, wonderful views. Go slower to make it last longer and take shorter steps to make it seem longer. Despite cheekily low height still high enough to be in the Julian Prealps. Princess was happy with the tour, me no less. And from the top you see everything you've visited nearby. And everything you plan to.

MONTE BRANCOT DA BRAULINS (Carnic Prealps)

On Friday, the princess and I headed again towards Humin and did a tour to Monte Brancot, 1015m. Admittedly a low hill, but starting at 210m it adds up to 800m ascent. Nice tour, beautiful places, worth the effort. Not just on the hill, lots of nice and interesting stuff below it too.

@turbo,
thanks for the new presentation. I'm diligently saving them and if destined I'll visit it someday, that mountain namely. Maybe not high but height isn't always what counts. Right?

@Irina ;

As fast as possible, as high as possible and as hard as possible was my short-lived phase and it's long gone. Say just enough and just long enough to test myself, experience a lot and grasp the essence of hills and mountains.
And now, long, really long, I prefer as far from home, as remote and as little known. And the more remote and less known, the friendlier and warmer the people. And they invite you with your pup to their home for coffee in a hamlet without shop or inn. Yes, that happened to me recently in Laško area.

And in the evening after the tour and for several days after it's so nicely warm at heart . . .

"turbo"
I join you in this thinking, like you I've started more often going to as little known and uncrowded corners, there I find much more than just peace.
But I understand those who break records in time, difficulty...etceek I did that years ago too.

... Maybe useful to someone!
On these winter walks, when snow balls up on paws of hairier dog friends. I protect Ira's paws with useless rubber overshoes, nylons, socks, whatever you have. I cut them into squares, wrap around the paw and tie. So she gets some booties. Claws go through, pads protected. Believe me, much more practical than bought booties that come off quickly and aren't cheap. Sometimes she loses one, I tie a new one quickly. At home I just pull them off. I thought of this last winter when despite creams she had full snowballs on paws and couldn't walk. Sometimes ideas come late, but better late than never. Might seem funny to some but it works, and many pleasant walksnasmehMajda and Ira

Thanks Majdag, I'll try how it works with our Pija. Now I thickly smear her pads with pharmacy vaseline (MajiO's recommendation), sometimes renew the application during the walk and our little dog now happily carries snow too.

best regards, Saša

In the nineties of the last century I had, we had at home a Yorkshire Terrier bitch. Long-haired lady who loved wandering around. And we went from Planica to Tamar, from Stara Fužina to Voje, to Lipanca on Pokljuka and similar excursions elsewhere. In dry and in snow. Problems with leaves and undergrowth in dry conditions and snow or snow clumps in winter I solved with a coat on the belly and trimmed paws. That is with trimmed fur between the pads and also a bit higher on the paw. She was long-haired after all and leaves, undergrowth and snow clung to her easily, rolling in the fur. The pads I smeared, appropriate for those times, with Nivea cream. Or was it Solea, who knows?

Oh, what beautiful memories. She was a real princess too. The photo is period-appropriate.

VALLE CAVANATA ; (Adriatic coast, Grado)

On Sunday my princess and I visited the western neighbor again and went lowest so far. We roamed around the Valle Cavanata nature reserve, enjoyed the sea air and blissful peace and had a splendid time. Where I drank coffee this time and whether we licked one or two scoops or not, let that remain a secret this time.

MONTE STELLA to TARCENTO ; Julian Prealps

Already third time this month to Friulian lowland. Already third bullseye. And third time splendidly.
We were on the hill, watched mountains and sea, I was in short sleeves and princess bare top and bottom. This time only upper part of the path; the lower one with pools and Crosis waterfalls we'll include in summer when splashing in water appeals to us.

@MajaO…if I'm not mistaken, in this thread http://www.hribi.net/trenutnerazmere.asp?slo=1&gorovjeid=1&id=5086&stran=1 @GITA and @Igor Zlodej gave you a »hint« for this circular snowshoeing….maybe in your »cleanliness« you could at least manage a »thanks for the hint« or something similar…but no, you're self-sufficient in your »personal space«….surely you don't see them as »invaders, or uninvited guests, or someone begging for your closeness«…they just gave you a »hint«….you didn't even say »thanks«…really nice…and I really don't wonder that visits to your »Magicland« have a short shelf life…as you yourself say…

…and I also don't know why you had to publicly scold @dm72 and publicly write that you'd write the rest to him on ZS….(couldn't you tell him everything???)…his photos and path descriptions are phenomenal and I hope he didn't decide not to post his tours anymore because of this…

pohodnik11, what got into you to start arguing? Now there will be whole novels with which she will brainwash everyone who dared contradict her. She is the smartest, she knows everything, knows all about stoves, poles, climbing, paths, dogs, nothing's impossible. Sometimes LG used to harass people with ZS messages, obviously she took over the relay.

Thanks for the tour invite...but thanks, really no...

@Maja O: "but it also happens that we agree on that between ourselves and not in front of all of you."... Hey come on, why did you then publicly scold @dm72 and not on ZS to settle it between yourselves...really a "pearl"... in quotes... (emphasizing, in quotes, if you accidentally miss them...)

If I may say a bit more about the dog culture of their owners. Interestingly, in dog culture, especially the attitude of dog owners towards other people, walkers, hikers, the current reality and mess of Slovenian society shows nicely.

On one side responsible people who want to live their lives according to their principles, inclinations, pleasures,... solve their problems and also not be victims of others' problems, don't want to be in the way of others nor others in theirs. Their motto: live and let live! They take responsibility for their actions, but strictly watch not to be scapegoats due to others' irresponsibility or suffer from their mistakes. Intentional or unintentional, doesn't matter. Let the culprit suffer because of them.

On the other side, irresponsible people, those who were never able to successfully solve their problems and consequently enjoy life. People for whom delegating responsibility to anyone is familiar and seeking substitute satisfactions (including bullying others to heal their mental wounds). Instead of solving their problems they direct energy to finding culprits and substitute satisfactions. On the other hand they let foreign responsibility be pinned on them when not necessary. Weak people, wimps. They don't know how to say NO! But they juggle the concept of responsibility skillfully, invent thousands of excuses why something didn't work and direct resulting anger at random fellow humans (weaker ones of course). They desperately defend such lifestyle. All means allowed to satisfy traumas, unfulfilled wishes, dreams,.. Dog terror is perhaps just one of them.

Since I started moving more in nature (hiking is part of it) I started meeting more owners and their dogs. Interesting how culture of people and nation is seen in such banal things as - dogs or attitude towards them and other people, fellow walkers, hikers,... Exactly through this the culture and character of Slovenian is seen and e.g. of Italian or Austrian. With negative and positive traits. For all three mentioned nations, no mistake.

As for pepper spray, nowadays it's nothing special to carry it. Only those fear it or oppose who can't do what they want because of it. It not only protected me from many rabid dogs and rabid owners - maybe it saved my life in completely non-dog situations in civilization far from nature. Maybe... Because thanks to it I'll never know what a psycho would do to me who came towards me in wrong direction on bike path and after our bikes collided started threatening with fists then when spray did its job started calling me(!) psycho. Thanks to that same spray I'll also never know what a robber would do to me with his knife on one of my Europe trips after demanding in broken English to give him 'all I have'!

Also from me congrats to Maja for her tour, nice description and nice photos. cool nasmeh

As for @dm27, nothing wrong at all that he got a little public reprimand for irresponsibility in handling his dog. mežikanje

As for thanking: oh dear, if everyone thanked everyone here for every info, tip, hint we read from comments, trip reports, path descriptions,... at least 80% of posts would be just thanks. velik nasmeh mežikanje And thank God we write, comment, message, help each other without expecting anything from anyone.

VanSims pure truth, as if professionally explained. I have no problems in mountains, neither with people nor their four-leggers. In cities it's a bit different, I've had problems: Depends on the owner. wink
