Our furry friends are not guilty at all, but uneducated and irresponsible owners-not all, so no mistake. In nature, urban areas... the dog must be on a leash, that's what the law says. Personally, somewhere in the hills where there aren't many visitors, it doesn't bother me if I meet a dog off leash. And from my experience, I'd say those who go to the mountains with their dog friend somehow control the dog better and are generally more responsible. In contrast to all those (again not all), who walk their small and large beasts to Šmarna or Golovec unleashed, where they should absolutely be on a leash given the number of visitors. There it's sometimes quite uncomfortable for me too. Not to mention the audacity of some when you point out the leash...After today's long walk, our furry one sweetly snored next to me, and he was on the leash

Our younger one likes to run after chamois too, so he's mostly on leash, the older one hides when the mountains get crowded

If the dog runs after chamois, I hope the first hunter takes care of him. That will sober you up, believe me.

He doesn't run anymore since he first tried, because he's leashed, and given where chamois run, I think he would take care of himself, wouldn't need any hunter. And don't be so pissed because he does no damage

Not long ago on Ratitovec I observed a loose dog that ran after a chamois in Razor. The chamois escaped to terrain inaccessible (for the dog), the dog barked at it with full force. All the primitiveness was shown by its owners, who encouraged it to go faster because it would escape. And then they laughed at its "impotence".

GregorC, I myself have witnessed such incidents, people let dogs run free as they please. Typically Slovenian, give dog owners one proper fine, and everyone will think twice how to behave.

In every group there are bad and good people (cyclists, hikers, young, old, gays, feminists,...). Unfortunately, it's exactly the bad examples that give a bad name to every group of people. The same with dog owners. I have experiences with both. Dogs of course aren't to blame at all. Legislation is what it is and it won't change here for a good while. There are defensive means against aggressive dogs (they usually work against even more dangerous owners of such specimens) and that's the most we can do ourselves for our safety. No one else will do it for us.

Off-leash dogs really bother me. Sure, they seem somewhat tired in the hills and don't jump on people, but in the lowlands it's happened to me several times that they've attacked me. So I really advise dog owners to keep their dog leashed, because if your dog jumps on me by chance, I now have enough defensive means that it will definitely be the last time it jumps on anyone, and you'll have to make sure to carry it down to the valley yourselves.

iUnknown, you're daring a lot - threatening people's greatest darlings. Some are ready for a physical confrontation just if you look at the pup badly. So be careful.

According to my info, a hunter can shoot an unleashed dog if it's chasing other animals or otherwise aggressive. Otherwise report to police and inspection - the fine isn't exactly low. In short, leash - it's not just about people's safety, but also the dog itself

Dear anonymous hikers, when I read and listen like this, dogs are superfluous to you in the mountains, cyclists bother you, in winter ski tourers. Would you also propose shooting the latter?

I don't know, but it seems to me that you impatient folks here don't hike the same hills as I do, and I've climbed almost everything in Slovenia. I've met many dogs, lots off-leash too, but the worst that's happened to me is that some poor thing barked too much when the owner left it tied in front of the hut. Such horrors that you've experienced, never and nowhere.

With a bit more tolerance among people and towards animals, everything could be sorted out. But dogs or people chasing wild animals is the most unacceptable thing.

The problem is people or rather dog owners who don't care about others. They let them off everywhere and always, unaware of the consequences. The same with some forum users who stand out with inappropriate and offensive statements.

Main problem is mainly intolerance. On one side overbearing dog owners who are almost ready for a fight if you look badly at their pup, on the other those who start hysterically yelling when they see a loose dog at 50m. If both took a step back there'd be much less displeasure and bad blood. Same with cycling, via ferratas,... Otherwise I personally never had problems with dogs, I even call some freely walking ones and pet them. I usually don't take my dog to the mountains because he doesn't like car rides.

@Trobec: look some people just fear dogs. I've gotten very used to them and almost don't anymore. But since I used to, I know what it's like when you first get scared of a dog running towards you and then, without wanting anything from the dog, you hear from their overbearing owner (or they even want to physically attack you), who is bothered just by the fact that you got scared of the dog or concludes from that that you have something against dogs and is maybe personally offended or thinks you're infringing on their right to have the dog off-leash everywhere or god knows what such an owner thinks, if at all. Most owners are fine, but here too, like in every group of people, there are bad individuals who throw a bad light on all dog owners.
