Hello, we are also new dog owners, whippet puppy is 3 months old. nasmeh

We know that this year's hiking season will be adapted to him, so we're already gathering ideas for gentler paths; I found some in this thread too.

We got a dog backpack and the little one really enjoys it, so the steep part of the path is carried, the easier flatter part he walks himself. Currently taking paths around home and slowly building fitness. So answer to "Where to go with a dog?" for us: "In the backpack!" velik nasmeh

At least while the pup is still growing ... Could be good also for older dog (smaller size).

Whippet can go anywhere. You can go full-day tour with him, or just take him for needs, and he'll be satisfied too. Probably the most grateful dog breed. But watch if he spots game, then nothing stops him.
Try to train recall, which with such pronounced hunter unlikely, didn't succeed for me.

My Blue growing way too fast, in couple days she'll complete 5 months already, so tackling lower hills with gentle paths. Nothing too strenuous or demanding. Last week we walked to Močnikovo sedlo under Stegovnik, reached it in good hour. Nice tour, suitable also for younger dog nasmeh

After zoo and Štanjel we took again something longer under paws and stepped. Weather great, excursion clear, conditions shorter time quite windy. Princess weakening regarding years, also length-wise did praiseworthy long excursion. Wonderful day nasmeh

I'll just describe here yesterday's interesting path that we walked. The aim was to see Babja jama. A lot of interesting things have been written about this cave where a cleansing ritual took place. Pavel Medvešček collected material. The day was drab. No sun. Just right for such a path. We went by train to Most na Soči. Maxi rode the train for the first time. And he liked it very much. When we were in the wagon, good thing I checked, I had left the train ticket in the car at the station. And really no bad experiences with conductors. They are very friendly. I went to him and asked if they could wait a minute so I could run for the train ticket. When I ran back he was surprised. There were still two minutes to the train departure. No need to hurry. Then really no more problems. It's noticeable, since we hadn't ridden the train for a long time. But the ride is very comfortable. The cave viewing was really interesting. You can feel the energy that is in this cave. Before, when walking along the Idrijca river Maxi swam in it. But once was not enough. He ran a second time. Then when walking along Soča I didn't let him in the water anymore. By the water Renato lit a candle for his former colleague who years ago crashed his car into Soča. We continued on the road past villages Zgornji Log, Bodrež and Avče. All the way to Kanal, where we waited for the train to Nova Gorica. Interesting villages. Yeah if you don't go on foot through these places, you don't even visit them. Especially we admired spring flowers. Such nice bunches of snowdrops I have never seen. At the end all four of us were satisfied.

Crazy swimmer. When we were on the road, he ran off to swim again.

Although back then women weren't allowed inside.

Maks liked it too. He's used to walking in caves.

Yesterday I wandered with Blue and Nessy under the ridge of Slaparjeva gora, where snowfall surprised us, so we enjoyed real winter idyll. The most excited was Blue, who went crazy up and down in the snow, and wild garlic also tasted great to her velik nasmeh

Under the hut we surprised two mouflons, which we spotted just in time, so we almost bumped into them or they into us velik nasmeh

The dogs were cool as spritzer nasmeh

Avtobusna was alone again this time too ;)

It's hard to see well, but it snowed quite a bit.

We're studying where to go in the near and far area of Kranjska Gora, where we'll vacation in summer. We're there traditionally every year, this year first time with dog. I think we'll go explore Trento too, and Italian side of border, a week will be too short for all ideas! And he enjoys water, already paddled in Bohinj Lake, streams, sea, home tub, ... mežikanje

Georgia, on 10.5 she'll be 7 months, so now gradually increasing length and effort of tours. Still watching that path isn't too steep or e.g. not one hour straight up steep slope, important that path rises gradually, and few steep sections. Up to half year I had same tactic as you - either we went on something shorter and not too strenuous or I left her at home cared for by Missy, with Nessy we quickly jumped to the hill.
Yes, vizslas are great dogs, my Blue is really obedient and well-behaved, haven't had any problem with her, only energy doesn't lack her velik nasmeh

Socialization she has at home, since with dad we have 5 dogs together and they're in one dog run. No boredom for her nasmeh

when you're in Kranjska Gora I warmly recommend a trip to Bistrica Alm and from there to Ojstrnik, of course with whippet. You drive to the alm, some toll to pay, don't know exactly how much, but then up there the whole day is full of action. Ojstrnik is less than an hour's ascent, around there. On the alm you can eat and drink something, nice to walk to nearby chapel Madonna della Neve (Maria Schnee), already in ITA. Those meadows around the alm and some forest around chapel, and say a big trough with water below Ojstrnik, where dog can refresh. Dog heaven nasmeh

Long time no see ... Our Tango keeps growing, soon 7 months. And let me list our adventures, maybe some idea useful for someone:

- from Jelenšč above Dražgoše to Dražgoška gora, can extend to Britmance and Bela peč, nice loop along scenic edge of Jelovica
- Driselpoh gorge in Baška grapa
- source of Bohinjska Bistrica
- Davča waterfalls
- walk along Bohinj Lake (S shore) and enjoying beach and water, yesterday he swam for the first time velik nasmeh

- walk through villages below Ratitovec (Zg. Danje, Zabrdo, Torka)
- from Kališ to Sv. Križ and Površnica, back by road, our staple
- Rilke path from Sesljane to Devin, enjoying beaches in Sesljane
- Jezersko, walking path along Ravenska Kočna
- Uskovnica from Rudno polje
- from Tuškov grič (Davča) to Črni vrh (Cerkno ski center)

All paths are gentler and not too long, suitable for younger, older dogs and those with less fitness (on 4 or 2 legs). Of course in summer early hour, golden hour! Gradually, by age, increasing path length and elevation. And can't wait for vacation in Kranjska Gora. Turbo, thanks for your suggestion!

Vacation on Komna. On Monday we walked to the Hut at Triglav Lakes, on Wednesday to Bogatinsko sedlo and further along the ridge to Lanževec, we descended via Lepa Komna. Even at 1500 m it was hot, but bearable. Overnight stays with dogs possible in the annex, it is intended for owners and their dogs, of course when available. They have, like many other huts, currently problems with water shortage, since there has been no rain for a very long time. The company, hut staff, service and food are excellent, as always nasmeh
