On the last October day I headed to Bavarian Grintavec. From Zapodno. Didn't know the conditions in the wall. Took winter gear with me. But didn't use it. Maybe for down, when I descended the direct route. Lots of snow there. But not frozen. Met no one. Went up via Kanja saddle. Snow towards summit on some path parts. And lots of scree. New stamp on top. And yesterday great views. But cold all the way. Nine hours walking. Last hour in dark. Days are short.
sculpture on the path1
mountain that requires good preparation2
I don't know which peak it is. Ločanka will tell.3
snow was under the wall, where the two paths separate.4
at least no wind.5
Three in a row6
going over the saddle. I know this climbing path well.7
it was so close8
when Kanja saddle ends that dangerous quite scree part of the path begins, where additional caution is needed9
you constantly have the feeling that some stone will break off.10
that's why I prefer to go to this mountain alone.11
I had no problems on the ascent, perhaps the thought of the mountaineer who slipped on this path.12
Views from the top13
I would have stayed longer, but I had to go down,14
the days are shorter. I knew that I would walk in the dark for a while.15
this is a new stamp16
one more look from the top17
then carefully down. Descents are usually more risky.18
There is snow on the direct path. It is steep for the descent.19
The sun is going to bed. It gets dark quickly.20

Good job, Darinka4. Hats off to you.
I've only been to Bavški Grintavec once, and that with my sadly deceased cousin... this crumbly mountain above the Soča valley properly tired me out.

The peak is on the right side if going to pl. Zapotok. I hope the stamp stays in place. It's well attached. Thanks, Piotr.
it is on this side.1

On Sat 2.6. start from Zadnja Trenta Flori at 5:40am, no cloud, perfect weather for Bavarian Grintavec tour, above 1800m quite some snow so cross it several times and watch markers carefully not to stray from path, not too icy so winter gear not needed, up snow ascent (strayed a bit from marked path) then down ferrata and cables to saddle, less snow. Summit 10:20 to 11 enjoy view, at 15h back at start. Great tour, more in pics

Hi, are crampons or ice axe needed on any part of the route?

Thanks and best regards

Today via Kanski pass to BG. All dry, some snowfields can be safely crossed or simply bypassed. Winter kit not needed on this one.
On the way back I went over scree/snowfield, right of the direct. For that I needed ice axe. Need to be careful, as there's a drop between upper scree and snowfield that needs climbing - probably II, plus rocks there covered with scree.
Planina Zapotok.1
Towards Kanja pass. The snow patches are crossed without winter gear or bypassed.2
Abundance of markers.3
At the summit. View of Mangart and Jalovec.4
On the descent, still before the junction for the path over Kanski preval, I went down this scree. [off path]5
Under the scree, need to climb over a jump - probably grade II. [off path]6
After the snow patch arrived directly at the junction where you turn straight up for Kanski preval. [off path]7

Hi, I'm interested in the route from Soča? Are there any snowfields left? Do I need winter gear? Thanks

As hikers who came from the Soča direction said a few days ago, there are snowfields, but they managed to cross them without gear.

On Saturday 2.7.2018 I went from Zadnja Trenta - Flori via Kanski saddle to Bavški Grintavec. No snow on the route. But the cables at the start are very loose. Caution needed. A few minutes below the summit there was a new landslide on Saturday that took part of the marked path. Back via direct route. That path still has quite some snow, but passable without winter gear.

Above the landslide I left a sling on a solid rock for abseil. Need at least 20m rope. No easy bypass.
At the crossing from Kanja saddle one cable has pulled-out starting peg. Also higher above landslide one peg quite loose. Rest of gear OK. Both routes from Planina Zapotok well marked. On easier route still snow, but no winter gear needed.

Is the route from Zadnja Trenta to the summit even passable or under what conditions?

The route is closed, there is 1 notice in the valley, if you miss it (like me) then at the top of the ridge at cca 2200 m just below the wall where the direct route and that via Kanski pass meet, another notice. I turned back to the valley, but for more skilled alpinists supposedly only 20 m of landslide is problematic. This weekend I'll rather repeat the hike along the route from Soča. Safety first, mountains will wait. Good luck!

Everything ends once, and so our young hiker stamped his last stamp in the SPP booklet.
We went to sleep in Bovec one day before, then on Wednesday early in the morning from Soča to the summit and back the same path. The trail itself is nicely followable and it also got some new color, for which I already asked 2 years ago on behalf of the markersjezik.
The day was ideal for hiking and views, on the way from Soča we met 5 people, 2 came from Bavšica over Mali Grintavec, so we could pleasantly chat at the summitnasmeh.
