Today (17.4.10) I was on Begunjščica via Central Gully. Still quite some snow in the gully, but it was okay to walk on it. No abundance of views due to clouds or fog, but every now and then it cleared a bit (fog). In the gully it was already quite warm, while on top it was a bit windy.

Congratulations on the successful ascent, could you please describe the difficulty of the route a bit more in detail... I also plan to do this tour...

Yes. First I planned via Šentanc, but on the way to Zelenica I decided for the Central or Main gully. From Ljubelj direction you go to the hut at Vrtača by the cable car, then I went along the transport path to Zelenica. Before the Zelenica hut or before the upper cable car station you enter the central gully (from the road). The path is well trodden and skied, so you can't miss it. The start was gentler and due to warm weather I sank to my knees and beyond several times. Then I reached the gully which was harder and no more sinking (except 10 cm new snow). From halfway up the snow was even harder and I decided to put on crampons. I looked for a flat spot, but there wasn't one. So about 100 vertical meters below the top I leveled half a square meter with the ice axe to put down my backpack and put on crampons. It went easily onwards. When you reach the ridge it's just a minute more (to the right) to the top. I was unlucky with fog. In short, the second half of the route from Zelenica is quite steep, but at favorable temperatures no big problem. No risk of slipping on the ridge anymore (at the exit). I recommend crampons, although I met some without. From Ljubelj with moderate walking and a stop at the hut I took two and a half hours, descent to Zelenica 40 min and another 40 to Ljubelj. Careful, happy trails and nice weather. lp.

Since after Janez's night shift we didn't have much choice, Peter, Janez and I decided for Begunjščica. The decision soon proved right. We put on skis at the middle cable car station, then across the stone-strewn ski slope further up the Šentanski gully towards the top. Conditions for walking were good, next to us there was also a track for "hikers", in which one sank nicely. The exit from the gully itself was very "rotten" due to completely sun-exposed snow. Towards the top some dry sections. Descent via Smokuški (Big) gully, with very good spring conditions for a great ski down. We skied almost to Smokuška planina, then on foot continued past the Završnica spring towards Zelenica and continued descent on the right side (looking towards Ljubelj) to our goal. LP Andrej

10 days ago, via Kalvarija to the top. All OK, snow only on the ridge ~2m, meaning almost all the way on snow. Crampons not really needed. From the top towards Roblek I'd recommend them on the snowfields though.

Maybe someone knows if the road to Tomčeva koča is passable?

Today from Ljubelj. Up over Preval back over Zelenica. Slightly late start (at 7) already promised crowd at the parking lot. Path without peculiarities. For the loop we used 5 hours and a few minutes. Nice tour.

Today visit to Begunjščica. Started at Zelenica at 8:00. At Roblek at 9:45, then to the top. At the top at 11:00. After obligatory photographing headed via Kalvarija to Preval, arrived at 13:30 just before heavy rain. Rain lasted ca 20 min and probably made the path via Kalvarija really a calvary. To car parked at Ljubelj arrived at 15:00 via Bornova pot. Interesting path - recommend. LP

Afternoon spent at charcoal grill (pork, turkey skewers, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, Cabernet Sauvignon), morning wandered around Begunjščica. Took Bornova pot which mornings not hot, returned via cool northern sides of Smokuški plaz to Zelenica where order cold "gams". Path itself not as long as appears. Up in 2h20min, descent good 2h. In between met on top only few hikers due to wind forecast and cold, but neither pronounced. Especially up top and northern sides bit cool breeze, that was all. From Zelenica bus of hikers from Rijeka and Pula climbed, of course walking, where after talk with them also cooled by sea quite bit, tourists lots. In talk with hostess at Zelenica she says this year visitors from all Europe here. Drink cold homemade gams-Laško and descend in half hour to parking. Nice and close tour from south to north of mountain. Lp!

We used the last vacation day before the forecasted worsening of the weather, so with the family from Draga valley via Poljska planina we headed to Roblek, where the girls stayed on the meadow before the hut, with son Jošt we headed to Veliki vrh. Walking conditions excellent, weather gorgeous, path excellent, likewise the žganci with cracklings. LP Andrej

Today I was training on Begunjščica. Start in Draga, then via Luknja, past Preval and via Kalvarija to the top of Begunjščica. To Preval it went very well and I arrived at Kalvarija still fresh. But Kalvarija was very muddy, slippery, so no progress. On top cold, windy and foggy. During descent to Roblek I was quite moved seeing a gentleman hopping to Begunjščica on one leg only. Crazy! I know damn well how extremely strenuous that is. When on crutches myself I barely managed a short walk. To climb to the top of Begunjščica, that is unimaginable for me. Descent spiced up nicely with searching for boletus and later hauling 10-kg rock to the valley.

Yesterday I also did a nice circular route from Draga over Preval to Begunjščica. Return past Roblekov dom and Poljska planina. Lots of people on the path and at the summit. Can't get out of my head the guy I met shortly after entering the forest at Preval. First he asked if we were already past halfway up. I looked at him blankly and said no. Then all disappointed he asks if at least the hut at the top is open. I ask him if he's going to Begunjščica summit or Robleka, he says Begunjščica. And I told him that at the top only the backpack is open. Then I hurried ahead before he surprises me with another question. I wondered if I wouldn't have done better to advise him to turn back to the valley. Otherwise nice tour, just foggy and windy at the top. Bojan A really hats off for your trainings and running feats. 15.8 you can come again to the Ratitovec run. Start as always in front of my block.
