Today on 1.1.2011, ideal conditions: snow frozen and compact. Worth going up, descent via karvaliji to Prevalo very icy, extra caution!

Today on Begunjščica I took advantage of good conditions in couloir Y (right branch).

Report: http://bojanambrozic.wordpress.com/2011/01/02/y-v-begunjscici/

In addition, I invite you to view the partial solar eclipse on January 4th.

Enjoy!

Yesterday, the last nice day I used to visit Begunjščica. Up Šentanc, but a bit below the summit via left couloir, which slightly lengthens the path along the ridge towards the summit. On the ridge sunshine and quite cold wind awaited, so the stop on top wasn't long and I was at the car on Ljubelj a bit after ten. Lpnasmehnasmeh

Today pure spring weather at Ljubelj.

Both above Y and central there are significant avalanches, snow is completely southern. Overnight nothing froze.

We turned a bit before right variant of Y via right couloir to ridge so not exposed to avalanches.

Just above Ljubelj we found KEY WITH BLACK FOB and left it in former duty free shop.

you're brave to climb in the thaw... probably haven't heard about that one from the trainee course...conditions far from climbablezmeden

So we adjusted the plan a bit, base was safe enough!

Trainee one happened right after heavy snowfall at low temps.

Looks like we need to climb at night, only then it freezes. Lucky it's clear weather...nasmeh but don't remember such a thaw mid-January, they say mid-next week it'll freeze again. How does Begunjska Vrtača and its routes look? Lp to you too!mežikanje

Only AGT caught our eye (but not to climb it at nightnasmeh), and it's quite poorly iced.

That night wouldn't have helped, since on Begunjščica it wasn't below 0

After a morning look through the window into a gray, foggy morningzmeden, my Draga and I decided to go towards Begunjščica. From Ljubelj we cheerfully headed to the middle cable car station, from there left along Šentanc to the edge and further to the summit.jezik From the middle station to the edge we were properly chilled as the whole side is in shadow. The path is well trodden (ski tracks), only at the start the first hundred meters nicely icy. At the summit a view for gods. Sun!cool In a moment we were warm, as today really beautiful day and shame to stay in valley.zavijanje z očmi The path along the summit ridge really well trodden, so no problems (but caution not superfluous). After more than an hour and a half enjoying the mountain beachcool we slowly head to the valley down the gully and into the home embrace. The trip behind us, feelings ours, as we experienced real hill poetry!mežikanje We recommend it to you, but not without crampons and ice axe...nasmeh

I was at the summit yesterday though. It was already quite late (2 pm), so I couldn't afford a longer tour. To Begunjščica especially in ideal winter conditions you get there in quite short time (about one and a half hours on average). At the summit it was so pleasant (no wind and warm), I decided to stay till sunset.jezik

Up I went via Šentanski plaz (least demanding and thus takes least time), where conditions are very good. For descent I chose Veliki plaz, which starts directly below summit and ends more to the west (at Smokuška planina). Here snow in places softer and sinks, so this plaz not best for ascent. For descent quite pleasant. Only thing some probably won't like is walking from Smokuška planina quite some time back up to Zelenica. But not big problem, as valley very picturesque (even at night velik nasmeh) and fills you with good energy.mežikanje

And some pics (must say I felt a bit sorry for those who had to suffer whole day in that fog):

Congrats, Lothar, for the nice pics.
Maybe it's not superfluous to warn that the north screes of Begunjščica are extremely avalanche-prone and after the snow today and yesterday, you need to wait a bit with this ascent till the snow avalanches or bonds.

3 days to one week, depending on snow type... and coming temperatures. Looks like snow has poorly bonded to base, and temps will stay well below -. Means snow will slowly transform. Gullies and routes are off at least for a few days. In Karavanke 25-40cm fell and no joke. Anyway follow avalanche reports and snow conditions on ARSO. Alternatives lower "hills" not so exposed and climbing kindergarten in Mlačca... For all other info available on ZS. Nice day all!

Thanks Juš and Jusuf, and others who on these pages share such and similar well-meaning warnings, very welcome for us ordinary hill walkers. Though you are youngsters for us but full of experience and knowledge which many of us sorely lack and thus in such conditions prefer lower mountains. This forum gains quality thanks to you experienced, as it helps many of us gather knowledge and experience quick and safe way. Let me say that on many paths this winter many tips from this forum came handy, so guys once again thanks and hats off to such knowledge and well-meaning sharing! Good luck all and may mountains love you at least as much as you them!

everyone contributes/should contribute so portal works as "God commands", unfair to single out individuals... in short: gullies, flanks and routes discouraged... easier ascents and where not much snow fell and ridges, where no risk of sliding shouldn't be problem, but eyes on stalks anyway, especially descent...nasmeh

I'd like to climb to Roblek via Poljska planina, interested in conditions there, and if circular route via Preval back to Draga possible
