Has anyone been to Grintovec over the roof in the last few days? Has the snow transformed enough for safe walking without much sinking in the early hours?

I join Urban's question. I'm planning an ascent on Saturday... Also, what's the road to Konca like?

Congrats Matjaž for super tour Since I don't know the path to Grintovec from that side, I'm curious how long approx you needed to reach the goal. If someone on the forum knows both approaches to the top please advise which one to take, from Jezersko which I know well but less suitable for winter ascent, or from Kamniška side? Thanks and happy trails everyone

From Jezersko I don't recommend it, unless you're confident in difficult winter approaches. I suggest Suhadolnik - trickier spot is Taška, higher up you elegantly avoid Kokrško sedlo and go directly to Spodnje Jame. Variant from Kamniška Bistrica (Konca) is a bit longer. Timetable - hm, around 4 hours...

Sla, thanks for reply , the thing is wishes are one thing, reality another, since we're both greenhorns in winter ascents despite quite some mileage in summer ones. We've already done some more demanding winter ascents and many easier ones, but on advice of those who taught us winter mountaineering, books and course, and you from this forum, we shouldn't go on winter paths unknown from summer. Pa so we're at the point to rather follow advice of those who master it well, than get into trouble ...mountains will wait.

CAN ELEGANTLY AVOID TAŠKA TOO. GO ON EASIER PATH. IT'S MARKED - RIGHT SIDE. MUCH LESS DEMANDING. LP AND SAFE STEP.

For whole tour with stops I needed a bit more than 7h. From Zagana peć to Cojzova koča 2h. Further to top 2.5h. Top-hut 1h. Hut-Zagana peć 1h. In between, of course, stops. Track is nicely trodden so no way to miss. On exposed spots need care, and of course on descent too.

With buddy we started today already at five in the morning from Konca, so part of ascent to Kokrško sedlo passed mostly in "turning back" and admiring, as seen from pics, majestic sunrise. We managed to avoid sun enough that snow on roof didn't soften to the top, but descent was already quite "wet". Those who went to top after us were probably quite exposed to soaking

urbann, I can't get enough of your pics... congrats. Fovšija works, but sadly us sleepyheads will continue to be deprived of such views, it's already like that, when you shot these and enjoyed, of course after a few hours of hard work, I'm still pondering whether to turn once, or even twice , since it's so nice, you just enjoy, we'll be left with sunsets and believe me, us sleepyheads sincerely admire you

I was yesterday on Grintovec from Konca. Snow starts somewhere at the forest border and up to Kokrsko sedlo it is fully windblown already in the morning too, so due to wading and falling into holes trampling becomes quite demanding. Further from the saddle snow held in places, elsewhere not. Really good conditions especially in the lower half of the roof where snow was windblown on the surface but overall held. Already in the upper half of the roof conditions changeable again. At the top wonderful day, initially slightly windy, later the breeze also calmed, so it was great. At the top quite a few people who took time to enjoy... Return in rodeo style, a bit forward a bit back then into a hole, sliding, jump I won't discuss crampon use, but they are necessary at least in the backpack. The whole tour in such southern conditions requires quite a bit of fitness and is quite strenuous, which some experienced on their own skin yesterday. Some pics later... cheers

By my calculations I should have been in Kamniška Bistrica earlier, but I misjudged the driving time a bit, anyway , but despite a fairly early start today the ascent below Kokrsko sedlo, where snow starts, was already strenuous. Then to the roof OK, further a mix of old snow with newly fallen wet snow, which caused me more trouble on the descent, since crampons formed balls for the first time today! very annoying and right on the steepest slope, so descent passed with banging crampons. Weather in the morning still clear, then shortly before the top suspiciously clouding and when I saw that Kočni were already in fog, I sped up a bit to the top, where the view was more foggy Today met one hiker, and even he turned back before the start of the roof , I persisted and as Šerpa already mentioned, walking at this time is really strenuous and at moments quite miserable and requires quite some fitness reserve... I got it done with massaging on the bench below the saddle Otherwise a nice day, which clouds additionally colored and regular workout on windblown snow, where there was no lack of squats, falls and searching for legs under snow

You managed some good pics. Conditions are "catastrophic", so I rather choose something more suitable these days. Say up to 1500 m.

Thanks... Conditions depend on where you go, but definitely better lower, since now it sinks already in the morning.

Today we were on Grintovec. We started at the lower cable car station to Kokrško sedlo and reached the top in good three hours. Conditions were fantastic. Snow starts a bit below the saddle and from there almost continuous to the top. Temperature was just right so we weren't hot, snow was hard and didn't sink at all. Over Streha snow was hard as concrete and without crampons there's no way you'll get there alive. Best snow for walking with crampons I've experienced. No avalanche danger either. Not very windy. Despite bad forecast we had sun and nice view all the way to the top. Later it clouded over and we ended up in fog. On return to Kokrško sedlo we met the only two mountaineers who, besides us, went up there today. We had a great time and despite the descent in cloudy weather we had lots of fun. Mandatory gear: crampons and ice axe.

Since I couldn't find peaceful sleep, at 1am I headed to Kamniška Bistrica. Shortly after 3:00 I put on the headlamp and in total darkness started from the freight cable car upwards. To Cojzova hut, I wake up quite some wildlife that scared runs down, I even more scared fly the next hundred meters . I reach the saddle shortly before 5am and slowly it gets light, so the lamp is no longer needed. Short stop in the nicely arranged winter room, quick snack and quickly onwards. Almost no snow on the path, it starts somewhere above 2200m, the track is nice and crampons were not needed. Towards the top a cold easterly starts blowing, temperature just above zero, snow holds well and does not wallow. The sun fully wakes up and shines on Kočne, to the top I grit my teeth a bit, legs already hurt, but with the wonderful view you immediately forget everything. Due to the icy wind I immediately rush down, seeking snow patches since it goes much faster on them . In less than an hour I am at the hut where I treat myself to a hearty snack, then I head down the scree, the temperature difference is huge, sweat is pouring off me and I am relieved when I reach the shelter of the forest. Shortly before 9 I am already driving towards Maribor, since I have to be at work at 14 , but today I have already done my bit .

Bravo! I don't know if I'd muster the courage alone and in the middle of the night to "head" to the saddle ... but as seen from the photos, it's worth it.
